In this shot you can tell how the material they used really does look like some modern spandex.

I wonder how it differs from the material used in Cavill's suit?

Not spandex, THAT would have moved and flowed. Way too leathery.

The MOS as I recall is a nylon type material covered one side with flocking to knock down the shine and give some body to the drape.

They first used it for Nolans Batman.

The new DOJ may be similar with a woven pattern for more detail.

The very, very cheap plastic appearance to the belt and shield is horrible. The more you look at that suit, the worse it gets.

The SR suit lacks a sense of hyper-masculinity and power that is predominant in Superman's design.

The high collar, the tiny S shield, the v-shaped belt and small swimmers trunks. It all results in an image that comes across as much softer, slimmer, and more effeminate. Couple that with the mind-boggling color choices and you're left with a pretty disappointing Superman suit - even if most of the classic elements are there.

As lujho said, a couple of changes here and there and it would've been a killer suit. That's what's so depressing about it.

Exactly, its all the little things that the traditional Superman design work. They also work together to create an image of power and masculinity. Despite having all of the traditional elements of the suit, the Returns costume does not at all understand the purpose of those elements in creating that certain image and silhouette that is distinctly Superman. Louise Mingenbach has got to be one of the worst costumer designers for superhero movies in existence. I really do not understand Singer's attachment to her. The recent photos from X-Men Apocalypse show that she has not lost her touch for ruining comic book imagery. Magneto's new suit is an overdesigned mess comparable to the TDK batsuit, but it is bright this time, so I guess we should all be happy! I feel like Jany Temime's work with Bond's tailored clothing in Skyfall and Spectre have the same problems. The big pieces are there and the colour palette is right out of the early Connery films, but the silhouette is completely wrong. The shrunken suit look makes Craig look short and blocky. The more traditionally English cut of his suits in Quantum of Solace, despite having less traditional materials and colours, flattered Craig's athletic physique and look more Bondian.

Wilkinson, on the other hand, gets it all. Despite the MOS and BvS's small deviations in texture and colour, those suits get the silhouette and important details all right. The only change I wish they would make next time around is shorten Superman's cape. The fringe of the cape dragging on the ground is Batman imagery to me. I think a shorter cape that doesn't touch the ground gives Superman a certain levity to his appearance. It makes him look like he is floating and subtly underscores that he is not bound to this earth like the rest of us.

I think that Snyder & co were going for MOS's Kryptonian tradition of wearing clothes much like ancient European nobility. Superman needs someone to carry his train:

I have just checked out the new X-men costumes. Is there some kind of rule against Wolverine ever having his mask?

To be honest, they look equally ridiculous, albeit in a different way. People don't look right when they are stretched out over the proportions of a Bruce Timm drawing.

not at all. Just showing how BIG he would have to have been to make that pose work.

Comic poses and figures are exaggerated to an unnatural extent.

Snyder has done a great job giving us these iconic poses that
work.

That costume is just so bad, barely any better than than the supergirl one.

Was this pic ever even used?

I don't believe so but back before the movie came out, they used a similar pic of Routh for a cardboard cutout to promote SR toys. It was equally awful; he was standing in a similar position and they had a little cloud emitting from his mouth to emulate his arctic breath. I couldn't find a picture of it though.

Putting a hard plastic shield on a fabric suit was a silly decision, as it restricts movement in the chest. No doubt this is a contributing factor to the shield's small size.

The SR is basically just a classic Superman suit, but the tweaks they made all work against it. The colors are pale and dull, especially the red (the worst change in my opinion). The material makes him look doughy. The small shield takes away from the power of the design. It all combines to make him look weaker than Superman usually does. I have no problems with Routh, either. The costume makes Superman look a little sickly or something.

The biggest change I'd make to the MoS and BvS suits is the cape. I don't care about the length and the color is good. I just want the classic all yellow shield on it. It's one of my favorite features. It would've made sense to me for the MoS Kryptonians to have it there. It looks regal.

I just had a debate on FB about the Returns suit. Someone asked me what I thought was wrong with it. My response:

Besides the entire suit being an eye sore? I've seen Cosplayer's come up with more appealing suits than what Singer did. He butchered it. The material looks like it has no imagination beyond the point of swim wear. The collar is choke-squeezing high. The cape looks like an oversized fruit roll-up and the S belt buckle is what I would expect to see in a cereal box. I disliked the SR suit the moment we saw Routh for the first official released photo. It's also too lean and devoid of muscle definition. Routh had good size but unfortunately, it made his physique look like my teenage cousin.

I'll let him know how I really felt next time, d'oh.:mnm:

The overall impression is that he has had to borrow one of Supergirl's costumes for some reason. The cut of the boots and the shorts are somehow inescapably feminine.

man! I hate that raised plastic shield... just plain dumb... stupid looking.

WHAT! were they THINKING!

Yeah, I can't imagine how they looked at that awful costume when it was finished and thought, "Oh yeah. We NAILED it."

Progression of live-action Superman suit:

Kirk Alyn, George Reeves (colourised), Christopher Reeve, John Haymes Newton (Superboy), Gerard Christopher (Superboy), Dean Cain, Nicholas Cage (the odd man out), Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill (MOS & BvS). Reeves, Reeve, Routh & Cavill all appeared on big screen while the rest were on the TV.
Very nice! I just wish the final Cavill pic used was an official still, not that on-set spy shot.
