I was trying to think of possible explanations for needing a different suit against Bane, and again one that would be more close to the comics.

Maybe the TDK doesn't take direct bounding blows to well? It stops small fire arms fine, but how would it do against heavy hits from Bane? Would the ceramics crumble? Perhaps after the first encounter Bane leaves not only Batman, but his suite as well, broken into pieces.

I agree. I guess Bruce caked enough black spray paint over that prototype to make it look like rubber... Hmmm.... If they just left it as it looked in that picture- at least it would have looked more "realistic" as Nolan would say... Heck, just drape the cape over the shoulders most of the time and it would have been just fine.

I think they went with the paint job to give it a more uniform 'comic' feel and I recall reading somewhere (it might have been the novelization) that Bruce sprayed the Nomex suit with 'special' paint to reduce the heat signature.

Hard armour can turn into flexible rubber after a spray of paint, but a combination of grey and black can never work on film.

Armour that blatantly looks like rubber is realistic but armour that is covered with fabric is unrealistic.

I really do favor the thicker neck. It just makes him look tougher. However, the increased mobility of the TDK suit is nice. If they could find a way to get the thicker look without sacrificing mobility, I would be all for it.

Honestly, all I wanted from the BB batsuit was two things.

1.)Let him move his neck
2.)Darken the chest symbol.

Technically I got both things I wanted. However, the mobile neck gave him the chicken throat look, and while Nolan did darken the batsymbol, he also made it smaller and surrounded it with another band of material the same shade of black so it's still practically invisible

I mean, how hard is it to make the chest symbol stand out a little. How hard is that???

How can they darken the chest symbol? It's already jet black, like the rest of the costume.

The same way the fabric cape and shiny gauntlets are a darker black than the rest of the suit. Use a different material for the bat to make it stand out against the rubber suit.

I've yet to see the classic grey + black trunks work on live action without it looking funny and stupid.

Since it's never been attempted by a major production, this is largely a meaningless statement.

I found this on the manips page, and I've made this arguement before but I figure I'll do it again with a decent picture to back me up. If the suit in TDK actually looked like this(and if it looks like this in TDKR), it would be a hell of a lot better and I think a lot less people would complain.

Yes, the suit is the same the TDK suit but there are small changes to make it look better in this drawing. One, the head doesn't look nearly as big, compared to the body, eliminating the bobblehead problem. Two, the mouth opening, and eye openings are bigger, eliminating that squinty look from TDK and showing off Bale's angry Batman face (the one he had in Begins) better. In fact, it's almost like they took his head from Begins, trimmed out "TEH PUFFY" and put it on the suit. It makes Batman look very feral and badass.

But there are more changes. The Bat Symbol is huge, it's very noticable. It takes up the entire part of the chest screaming "WHAM, I'M BATMAN!" Which is important, the symbol needs to be there, and if it's going to be an all black suit, the symbol should be huge, just like in Batman Begins.

Finally there is the cape. Sure it goes over the shoulders like a superman cape, and it's less like a cloak, but the way it's held (and this is all just a matter of USING it) definitley says Batman more than TDK does.

If the suit looked more like this, then the seperated armour, the shreddrer gauntlets, the entire busyness wouldn't really be noticed because, the cape, the big symbol, and the smooth looking cowl with the menacing looking face under it would take all the attention. It would look more like Batman wearing armour than a swat guy wearing a cape and cowl.

You get my drift?

The artist fixed the TDK cowl. The ears are straighter, the cowl has a meaner look, the mouth opening is bigger and the cowl is not as wide. It fits on his head quite well, unlike the real thing.

As Dave pointed out, it's inspired by old school circus strongmen and acrobats.

Today, trunks persist for a couple of reasons, not the least of which is that it spares the artist from drawing a skin-tight spandex crotch. Batman is a prime example; when you take away his trunks, the entire costume is drawn ridiculous skin tight, and then you have this weird, baggy, wrinkling spot over the crotch because obviously nobody wants to see a skin-tight crotch.

The other reason (and the most important reason) is colour balancing. Superman and Batman both look better with red and black trunks, respectively, balancing the design of their costumes. Of course, there are ways around this (the modern trunkless Wolverine design solved the problem quite capably), but that requires more significant redesign--and when it comes to Batman and Superman, is unnecessary and probably undesirable (as we see with the awful new Superman look).

Finally, superheroes wear trunks. That's superhero fashion, just like capes and emblems on their chests.
