Love that quote at the end about Bale. Sounds like they gave him a lot more to do this time around. Thank goodness.

Definitely. This part pretty much confirms that Nolan is giving Bale meatier stuff to chew on as an actor compared to what he had in TDK.

It’s a time period that is not so far ahead that we would have to do crazy makeup or anything — which I think would be distracting — but it gave them something to get their teeth into, particularly Christian in terms of [portraying] this guy who has been frozen in this moment in time with nowhere to go. He really has done an incredible job figuring out how to characterize that and express that.

That should have been slapping me in the face (hell, Rachel Dawes - double slapping) for the past 3 years... but I never realized it until now. He really does have nothing outside of being Batman now.

Wow.

Excellent point / post.

What about polo?

And tangerines?

it sounds to me like we're getting a more cleaned up Gotham who doesn't need Batman as much as Bruce needs Batman. The Harvey Dent Act is cleaning up Gotham but Bruce can't move on from not being Batman.

 Love the sound of that!

I could listen to Nolan talk all day. The man is a genius.

I'm aboard the he's-Batman-all-throughout-those-8-years train. However, it sounds to me like we're getting a more cleaned up Gotham who doesn't need Batman as much as Bruce needs Batman. The Harvey Dent Act is cleaning up Gotham but Bruce can't move on from not being Batman.

This seems really likely actually.

He has a ridiculously good body of work behind him and he's still a relatively young director. Imagine all the extraordinary films he's going to make before he's done. Whoa!

Alfred "You're getting lost inside this monster of yours". This seems to be where we find Wayne at the beginning of TDKR.

My favorite part of the interview: [Nolan on the eight year gap and what it means to the characters] "It’s a time period that is not so far ahead that we would have to do crazy makeup or anything — which I think would be distracting — but it gave them something to get their teeth into, particularly Christian in terms of [portraying] this guy who has been frozen in this moment in time with nowhere to go. Man, I can't wait to actually see some of Bale's performance in TDKR. I mean the guy IS fresh off winning an Oscar  Anyways, hopefully the trailer on Friday manages to capture some of this "frozen in the moment" Bruce Wayne. Is it Friday yet?!

WB are punishing us for the audio leak of the prologue.

I really hope TDKR's focus isn't too scattered. I want to see Bane, Ra's, Taia, Scarecrow and Catwoman... but I still want this to be a BATMAN movie with a heavy focus on Bruce Wayne.

Bane and co. are Batman characters, so...

It's still a Batman movie, no matter what.

He had plenty to do in TDK.

Agreed, I never got these complaints with TDK.

It's like saying The Killing Joke is not a Batman comic.

I guess by focus they mean lots of scenes & dialogue dedicated to the character. You don't necessarily need a lot of scenes or dialogue to be the central focus, as evidenced by TDK, but for some I guess they need that.

But for me, this complaint about TDK is practically non-existent.

When I say BATMAN movie, I'm not talking about Batman's rogues, I'm specifically talking about the character.

Also, TKJ wasn't really a Batman comic. It was a Joker comic with Batman in it.

Or Gotham Central. One of the best "Batman" comic books ever, and it had maybe 30 panels of an actual Batman in all of it's 40 issues...

I love Gotham Central. Very underrated title.

The ending of TDK and the beginning of TDKR seem to imply that they're trying to make Gotham a better place without this over reliance of Batman. The reason Wayne pins the murders on himself is to give a chance for Gotham to try working with a now much cleaner body of government that isn't influenced by the mob or corrupt politicians.

In order for this to take complete effect Gordon has to keep his word as a law enforcer and not just turn a blind eye to vigilantism and Batman/Wayne will move aside for a while and let Gotham pick it up and let them build off the foundations Dent, Batman and Gordon left at the in of TDK albeit a lie.

Otherwise the entire reason of Batman pinning the murders on himself renders itself moot.

That's the sacrifice I think Nolan is talking about Gordon and Batman making.

Not sure why frozen in time has to mean he's busy being Batman.. I think of it as the opposite, a lot of people seem to gloss over what it means for him to become the villain at the end of TDK.

I expect him to be in a similar place to the beginning of BB mentally... 'Are you so desperate to fight criminals that you lock yourself in to take them on one at a time.'

He's got no reason for a life outside of Batman now without Rachel, and his purpose as Batman in a cleaner city is diminished and hampered by the cover up for Dent. He's got no way to express his pain but to go out on patrol and beat it out of some hapless low level criminals.

He won't just rise in terms of overcoming the obstacles within the time frame of this film. It's damage going all the way back to BB that he's going to face down by the end of TDKR.

Ummmm, Selina?
