Well clearly someone is chanting it otherwise Bruce wouldnt ask that guy what it means and im just making a logical guess based on all the shots from the trailer. The guy falling with the rope attached im guessing is some random guy trying to escape which is when Bruce asks. The shot from the teaser with the guy climbing with no rope im guessing is Bruce finally escaping.

I think you're right.

It could be.

or it could be something written that we can't see.

Or it could be a motion someone is making

It could be something audible different from the chant.

the jury isn't out yet

It will be interesting to see how much of that description is true. It was pretty general/vague, though.

Which description is that?

This was posted on IMDb. Grain of salt must be taken!

My friend was fortunate enough to get to work with the sound crew for The Dark Knight Rises in this past month or so during their first haul of post production work , due to his skill in the field and acquaintance with one of the crew members. He said it was very early in the production for this kind of work, but WB wants to stay ahead of schedule. He got to see one very important scene from the film. The information I’m about to post is from him word for word. I asked him if I could share it, and he said I could as long as I do not mention his name.

The scene I saw is the fight scene between Bane and Batman that Warner Bros has been promoting for the last couple of months. The scene takes place in the sewers underneath the city’s football stadium. It begins with Batman entering the sewer and taking out Bane’s men one by one. This is very similar to the dock scene from Batman Begins. Batman employs a lot of stealth here.

Bane’s men catch on and point their guns at Batman, forcing him out. Bane himself steps out of the shadows.

Bane: Ah, we are so thankful that you accepted our invitation.

Batman: What do you want?

Bane lifts his hand to reveal a detonator. He presses it and there is an explosion behind him. Batman looks concerned as if to expect something else to happen, but nothing does. Bane laughs(His laugh is freaky, man. He doesn’t laugh like someone who knows how to laugh, but rather someone who’s mimicking laughter. As if he’s never had a time to laugh in his life. Combined with the mechanical sound created by his mask, it’s absolutely chilling).

Bane: A mere example of what is to come. Just above us are 30,000 people who have been lied to their entire lives. They have been manipulated by a system of corruption and greed, forced to live in a city of decadence. The very air they breathe is polluted by the lies of the city. Lies that you have created. They are slaves, yet they do not even realize it. We are here to liberate them. Starting today, the people of Gotham will finally have their eyes opened.

Batman: You can’t change Gotham this way.

Bane: Come now, you of all people must understand the importance of dramatic example. This is the way it must be, there is no other way. Gotham will be set free.

Batman: Gotham won’t bend to the will of a terrorist.

Bane: They will bend to me. However, I haven’t answered your question Batman. You asked me what I wanted. Truthfully there is only one thing I want. I want to break you.

After saying this Bane charges Batman and a fight ensues. For the first half the fight it’s pretty even, then near the middle Batman begins to gain the momentum, but ultimately loses it, and Bane just brutally demolishes Batman with every blow after that. It’s done in a way that it seems Bane was toying with Batman for most of the fight, letting him think he had a fighting chance, but by the end it’s apparent Batman never stood a chance. He gets Batman to the ground and rips his mask off. He looks at the piece of Batman’s mask in his hand.

Bane: For so long you have dedicated your life to a dying cause. Change is coming, and it begins today.

In one of the most brutal shots of the entire series, Bane then stomps on Batman’s face with is boot, knocking Batman out.

Bane: Take him

Two of Bane’s men grab Batman and start dragging him away. Bane walks away and drops Batman’s mask.

That is all I saw.

Some notes:

-He only has about three lines, but from what I heard Batman’s voice is perfect. It is not the unintelligible growl we heard in The Dark Knight. There is a slight growl to it, but it’s more like his voice from Begins, but not even that. It’s very similar to the whisper we heard in the teaser, but a lot more aggressive and stern. It’s hard to explain, but it should not be getting any criticism this time around. Well, it probably will, but I think it’s an improvement from The Dark Knight.

-Tom Hardy as Bane is absolutely brilliant and terrifying. My description does not do his performance any justice what’s so ever. It’s completely subtle and nuanced, particularly his delivery of the “break you” line. I’ve seen a lot of fan films with Bane where he screams the line like a barbaric buffoon. Hardy’s delivery of the line is the exact opposite. It’s very quiet, but completely sinister. The way his eyes widen when he says, it’s scary. There’s a sort of longing in his voice, as if this is something he’s been waiting for, for a very long time. The way he charges Batman is terrifying as well. It’s edited in a way that it takes you by surprise, believe it or not. It causes a very physical reaction in you. You don’t expect him to charge. It’s that feeling you get when you’re on a roller coaster and you get to the very top, right before you drop. That’s what it feels like when he charges, and he charges like some kind of strategic gorilla, he shows no sign of stopping or slowing. It’s wonderful.

-The full scene is a lot longer then I described. It’s a good 10 minutes long. Bane has one line during the actual fight “Is this all you can offer? I expected better from Gotham’s champion”. Batman has no dialogue in the fight. The key here is the environment. So much of the sewer environment is used in the fight. Whether it’s Bane pushing Batman against the railings, plowing through the water fall, or even Batman throwing a batarang to take out one of the supporters of a rusty beam. Through out the entire fight Bane’s men have their guns pointed at Batman, but they don’t intervene. They just watch.

Warner Bros is keeping so much of this filmed closed up it’s amazing. None of the promotional material has even scratched the surface and none of what I‘ve written is doing it any justice. I only saw one scene, but this whole movie is big, I can’t even imagine what the climatic fight will be like.

They're basically chanting 'score one for the Gipper'.....kind of an uplifting, Capra-esque moment in the film....like Rocky.

;)

Christopher Nolan Unlikely to Make Major Changes Audio Changes to "The Dark Knight Rises"

There have been two basic reactions to the first few minutes of The Dark Knight Rises. The first is “holy crap, that was awesome!” and the second is “…but what the hell was Bane saying?” Christopher Nolan decided to use a mouth-covering mask for Tom Hardy‘s villain character and while the mask looks ominous it has the effect of really muffling the character’s speech.

The trailer drop for the film showed that this might not be as big a problem as some people feared, as Bane’s one big line in the trailer was affected by the mask, but still intelligible. Fans are still calling for some adjustment to be made to the film, however, seemingly out of fear that Bane’s garbled dialogue will ruin the experience.

Christopher Nolan’s reaction seems to be essentially “chill out. I got this,” and one report says that he plans to make only minor changes to the film’s sound mix.

THR says that there are some at Warner Bros. who are taking complaints about Bane’s voice to heart, and want Nolan to tweak the sound mix. The site says one source on the movie is “scared to death” about Bane’s voice. Reportedly, however, Nolan plans only a slight alteration to the film’s sound mix.

Another unnamed exec had the following to say — and take this with a grain of salt, as it is someone paraphrasing what they think Nolan’s intent is:
Chris wants the audience to catch up and participate rather than push everything at them. He doesn’t dumb things down. You’ve got to pedal faster to keep up.
.....

Like I've been saying for a while Chris Nolan doesn't want to do any ADR work for Bane. If it ends up happening it'll probably be because WB somehow forced him to do it.

The complaints of Banes voice in my humble opinion have been largely blow out of scale. The only line that is somewhat hard to hear is when he tells his henchmen to stay on the plane. Everything else from the prologue is audible as was his one line in the latest trailer.

I seriously hope some of those execs at WB fail here in trying to force Nolan to change this aspect of the movie. If they ADR most of Hardys performance as Bane I think a lot will be lost in the great performance he seems to have given.

Thing is...it's still relatively early in post, too. The actual sound mix is one of the last things to be done, and it's almost certain that attention will be paid into making the voice discernible and intelligible, even if it's muffled behind a mask. Any sort of sound/SFX released at this point on anything should be considered rather rough. Granted, an audience watching a trailer doesn't excuse anything to that extent, but again there's a long way to go before anyone should be worried about sound quality of all things.

So yeah, critics should probably chill out until they see the final product.

I thought Bane sounded great in the trailer.

As someone else said, the voice reminded me of Michael Ansara who did the B:TAS Freeze voice.

Meh, people have blown the bane voice thing way out of proportion.

That one exec said it best about Nolan's films. "you've got to pedal faster to keep up"

If there's anything to fix, it's Batman's voice. Granted they probably fixed that already but I have my doubts.

His voice sounds fantastic, and although I'm not saying the insider statement from WB is true, I don't think there's any harm in encouraging the audience to lean in to the story and invest themselves in it properly rather than being spoon fed everything. This probably comes from my love of The Wire though. :awesome:

It was the plane noise that was the issue . Make that lower and Bane sounds fine ..... Just like the other scenes he was perfectly understandable.. . I missed maybe 20 percent of dialogue of prologue greatly to much panic . No need to redub Hardy's scenes and Nolan won't

That's a (questionable) creative choice altogether. :D\

A lot of it will end up being ADR'd anyway...just like a lot of dialogue is for any movie, especially if there's a real mask involved. So it's really more of a mix issue...which is kinda' beyond the scope of judgment by execs/worriers/etc. But if they do have problems making it out...it is something to think about. But again, it's doubtful that when it comes to the final mix they'll be going for something that's purposefully unintelligible.

A lot of people didn't have the benefit of a transcript that I and others did when hearing Bane's voice in the prologue and the trailer. It affects your judgement without realizing it. Having that is a benefit you are not going to have in the theater without subtitles for the rest of the dialogue.

If they want it "cleaned up", that's one thing. But I'll die if WB has Nolan and Hardy re-record Bane's voice to the point of sounding totally different.

actually that sounds very plausible and fitting to me. time will tell.

It's probably not far off what will happen, just someone filling in the gaps I think. I doubt the stadium is connected though.

Lets hope that Nolan has enough pull (which he should) to smack down that demand to the ground.

He has the leverage over them not the other way around. If I were him and they had me try doing something like this I'd simply tell the main execs behind doors that they should prepare themselves for me not returning as producer/adviser for their next "reinvention of Batman".

Money talks so I think they'll let him do it the way he wants.

I hope they edit Bane's voice to sound like Ed Wynn's when he voiced Mad Hatter.

WB: We'd like Bane's voice to be easier to understand.

Nolan: I'll take that into consideration, thanks.

End of subject.

:D
