The Walking Dead The Walking Dead Season 5, Episode 8 "Coda" Discussion Thread

Just saw the episode a while ago. I didn't get the part where Beth said to Dawn "Now I get it". Can somebody explain that to me? :oldrazz:

Also, how stupid was that? The trade was going smoothly until she decided to stabbed Dawn, it's her fault she got shot.

Beth's death was so badly written it eliminated any emotinal impact. I felt more pity for Dawn. It was Beth's own fault, not Dawn's.

Beth committed suicide by cop.

So, is it safe to assume they could be heading to Richmond? Noah mentioned his family lived behind walls, which were seen in the teaser letting walkers out. Gated community here we come?!

I'm still sad about Beth's death. She became one of my favorites back in Season 3 or so and just when they were giving her more to do with an interesting storyline, boom she's gone. :csad:

carol should've died, not beth.

While Carol is one of my favorite characters, I have to admit that her dying in that hospital would have made more sense than Beth dying.

In the Carol and Daryl-centric episode of this season, there was dialogue with the two of them where Daryl is optimistic and Carol says stuff like "We don't save people anymore." Then, by the end of the episode, it's Carol who convinces Daryl to help Noah.

Imagine Carol saving Beth's life. I feel like that would have been a pretty good sendoff since I think it makes sense with the storytelling.

That said, though, while I'm still flabbergasted at how dumb and poorly-handled Beth's death was (I honestly see it as a possible "shark jumping" or "fridge nuking" moment), I'm also happy that we'll see more of Carol? Like I said, she's one of my absolute favorite characters.

Yeah. Beth dying seems like it was almost just a routine to have a character killed off by the mid season finale and that's why they did it. And just chose Beth.

But no. The beef I got with this killoff is the fact that they spent half of part 1 of season 5 building up and developing her goddamn character only for her to be killed off.

Carol on the under hand, served her purpose on the show. And it was time for her to croak.

Can't argue with any of this. I feel like Carol's story is more or less finished. She got her ultra-badass moment with saving everyone from Terminus, gaining trust from Rick again. With the Carol and Daryl-centric episode, it seemed that they were exploring a different facet of Carol (about how devastated she was about killing Lizzie; about how "we don't save anyone anymore").

It would have been pretty cool for Carol to sacrifice herself for a young girl like Beth. It would have made sense.

precisely. but, they're keeping her alive and somewhat crippled at the moment, which means they must have more in store for her.

or the show will begin dragging with some of its characters -_-

I still think Carol should stay as a right hand man/woman to Rick along with Daryl. They'd make a terrific threesome leadership.

One of them has to die, and their too scared to kill off Rick or Daryl this early on.

Rick is totally off limits to be killed off. Even the comic book has not killed him. He's the main character.

The scene was seriously awkward. I don't even know how I feel about it.

If I had to choose between Carol and Daryl, I would pick Daryl to be killed.

His character bores me now. All he does is mope and cry. Carol is infinitely more interesting.

Daryl has not had anything interesting to do with his character since season 4. When Merle was around him in season 3, that was the best. That and his softening and friendship progression with Carol in season 2 over Sophia's disappearance. Daryl's best periods in the show.

I agree. Daryl and Merle's dynamic was really interesting and actually fun to watch. Daryl hasn't captured my interest since.

I miss Merle, but his death has been the best and most rewarding in the entire television series thus far, in my opinion. I mean, his redemption story involved drinking whisky while blasting Motorhead in a car surrounded by zombies. I approve. :yay:

Agreed. I was so relieved they didn't kill her off in the midseason finale. I never liked the hospital storyline (really? no one could take the crazy woman running the place down?), and didn't think Beth was a strong enough character to carry it, which made those episodes even more of a chore to get through.

I wish they'd done better with that character, because I do think there was potential there, especially after her episodes with Daryl last season, and it's sad they killed her off...but, thank god it wasn't Carol.

I don't post much in these parts because I like to remain spoiler free with this show. I don't even watch the previews because I feel they give a little bit too much away.

I just got down with this episode again and I think of all the deaths that have come and gone, Beth's hit me the most. I think the look on Rick and Daryl's face said it all.

Such a great show. Can't wait for season 6 to start back up.
