The Wrestling Thread Has More Hype Than WrestleMania XXIX - Part 91

Cena can have a somewhat heelish promo...but he can't be heel, lol.

And Punk returns after his time away and slides into Cena's face slot.

The problem though is there aren't any faces for him to feud with in that gap of time, unless you pit him against Orton or Sheamus.

Or Ryback I guess.

Ryback is another and Sheamus would definitely fit the bill, they could maybe even use Bryan. I doubt Del Rio is over enough for it to work but a face turned Ziggler vs Cena could.

I actually enjoyed that last segment. I feel that it was the best job they have done building to this match to date, and my attention has been grabbed for the first time. Not necessarily my interest in the match itself (I still would prefer a triple threat with Punk), but my attention. I liked the little hints of heel Cena, and Rock keeping things serious for the most part.

Good job all around.

Perhaps it would have been all five of them. Wasn't the segment originally announced as a panel of five hall of famers? I know Lawler was there too, but he didn't count as a panelist.

I thought about that but wasn't sure if they were including or excluding Lawler even though he was also moderator. Five would have been better even though that ring was pretty crowded as it was. Especially since only three guys that were in there are in the HOF right now and not soon to be inducted.

Thats the big issue I see with a Cena heel turn if Punk takes time off. Not many guys are on Cenas level that could easily slide into that same face slot and be just as big a star/draw.

Some could be built up but it would take more time.

I like that Rock mentioned Flair during the q&a. If Rock were full time there is no way Cena wouldn't be turning heel at Wrestlemania. It's nothing more than a tease though.

Cena was definitely heeling it up in that segment. If he were to turn heel, he'd have Ryback and Sheamus to work with, but I wonder if WWE will really do it.

Nobody other than Punk (and the part-timers) are on Cena's level. But a hot angle like a heel Cena (if done correctly) could get somebody like Sheamus or Ryberg over.

But don't have it be funny crack jokes Sheamus, the Celtic Warrior gimmick got him over, why'd it change?

And I assume they're turning Orton heel, with Orton, Henry, Show, Cena, Ziggler and The Shield as the top heels there'd be enough dance partners to mix and match with ADR, Team Hell No, Sheamus, Ryback.

Cena should hate Rock for all the reasons he's stated, plus the fact that Rock humiliated him at WrestleMania last year. Rock should hate Cena because Cena is annoying. I wish they’d let Rock point out how much buys have dropped with Cena on top. I understand why they won't go there, but it would add a lot of fire to the feud if Rock said he was pissed at Cena because he made wrestling unpopular. Cena is desperate to win. He can't face the prospect of losing to Rock again, and that would make him desperate enough to do anything. Will he do something simple, like use the ropes for leverage, or violent, like waffle Rock with a chair or the title? Or will he sell his soul to Shield or Vince McMahon? I've got to say they have me eager to find out. The one way to build interest among fans for this match is to tease Cena turning, so bravo to them for that, dude looks desperate.

Cena didn't make wrestling unpopular. Vince McMahon's crappy decisions over the years has done that.

they couldnt make it any more generic if they tried.

Going back to this, I just read that this event is in Chicago, if Lesnar takes out Punk the night after Mania this would seem the ideal event for Punk's comeback and match against Brock........Or if Brock helps Punk beat Taker it could be the place for Taker vs Brock.

He took the one Punk did on him at Night of Champions perfectly.

I thought the table got in the way of them getting the full motion tonight.

That may be the only one he's ever taken well. Maybe. I don't think it's the table either. I remember the one at survivor series 2011 and the first rock bottom at wrestlemania 28 looking the same. The ones he takes from the rock are terrible. He jumps too high up and always lands closer to his lower body area. I know he's probably afraid of hurting his neck, but jeez. I always loved how austin sold the rock bottom. Legs flying in the era, perfect motion with the move.

I'm going to stop you right there. Is the WWE in any kind of financial trouble? He's doing fine. Sick of this Cena.

And that, my friends, is how you build Rock v. Cena II.

Great segment tonight.

John Cena and CM Punk both did something tonight that nobody has done in wrestling in a looooonnnnngggggg time...

Make me want to see them get their asses handed to them because of how good they were "heeling" it up and making me want to see them get what's coming to them.

Despite -knowing- that Cena is going to win, I've become fully emotionally invested in wanting to see him lose after that. That segment successfully made me forget about the reality, and buy completely into the kayfabe. Buying into the kayfabe is all about what watching wrestling is about, not all the political crap and who does the job to who and how, and tonight's end segment did that better than 90% of the angles in the last 5 years that I've been watching again.

Oh yeah and whose decision was it to turn Cena into a white meat babyface and revolve the company around him?

I'm really enjoying the buildup for Cena Vs. Rock II. Reminds me a lot of Rock's feud with Jericho where he told Y2J that he "was just not that good."

I don't want to get my hopes up But the Cena heel turn tease is taking it up a notch

The problem is WWE are scared that they won't find someone new on top who can bring in what Cena brings in, so they cling to Cena.

Cena was actually over with adult fans until his character shift. WWE made the decision to go in another direction for various reasons. It all comes to Vince though; he signs off on everything. Although, USA is responsible for the 3 hour format idea.

I don't think it's that they're scared necessarily, they would probably be more or less fine without Cena, I think that it's more just that he is a cash cow for them and they want to make as much off him as they can while they can.

The wheel's spinning, but the hamster's dead. That was the highlight of RAW.

That's WWE in a nutshell over the last 6-8 years. I keep waiting for the ship to right itself, but it seems to drift farther and farther off the radar.

I fell asleep during Miz vs Barrett. Doesn't seem like I missed much. Depending on the first Raw post Mania, I may be taking another hiatus from watching WWE.
