The Wrestling Thread has much larger nipples

I’ve always enjoyed wrestling but never properly kept up with it since the 90s. Not even a case of falling out of love with it, more just not enough time in the day to follow every interest. Guess I should try for the main events at least. I did go to a couple of wrestling events in London before the lockdown.

LA Knight managed Mace in dark match at the SmackDown event.
I like that pairing. Mace is huge. Should be treated like a monster instead of the joke he was turned into.

Also just because I haven't watched it in awhile.

AEW, where unless it's Britt or Jade, the women don't get time. Thunder Rosa won the title, what a month ago? She's been on TV a total of like 3 mins. God, the place is so overtly sexist, Vince looks more progressive in that regard.

Yesterday was Ruby Soho's first TV appearance in months. She has been on Dark and Elevation but nobody watches those shows.

I don't know why I got excited they brought in Toni.

There is a big difference between TV and their web shows. The Marina Shafir segment was a perfect example. She's suppose to be a top contender based on something no one has watched. No one reacted to her match, and she was against an over babyface in Skye Blue.

Meanwhile in WWE, these themes will get a loud reaction from the crowd when they start playing:

And people will be excited when those two return.

So what does everyone think of the crown spot on Good Friday?

IMO, it's the only big blind spot for AEW. There's no reason they shouldn't have at LEAST 2 women matches on Dynamite.

Which makes sense with two titles for the women. Between their three hours of television a week, they should be able to find 3-4 matches for the women weekly, plus at least one big promo segment. Having one of those matches be a 6-8 person tag would also allow for plenty of women to be on television every week. I feel like most women are unfamiliar to the audience.

I've wondered why they don't have a tag title for the division, and now I feel like it's because they'd have to make time for it. Which explains why the Iconics didn't go to AEW imo. But unless it was Britt and to a lesser extent Jade, I feel like they treat the women like a complete after thought. Shida was barely on as champ, and then once she lost the belt, she went missing for a legit 7 months. I feel like Tay's kind of been ruined by putting on TV with Sammy (the crowd cheered PVZ attacking her last night), but I guess she's at least on TV.

The ROH purchase has seemingly made things worse. He's finding time for more "title matches" but somehow less time for the women. It's got this WWE feel, while there is technically "multiple" feud amongst the women, only one or two are legit. Get anytime or end up with meaningful storytelling and payoff.

On the WWE note. While I wasn't big on Sasha as tag champ again, she's definitely making the most of it. Her being attached to the title, has made it feel legit again.

It caused issues with the ROH Women's Championship, currently held by Deonna Purrazzo. But she wasn't able to defend it at Supercard of Honor (where Samoa Joe showed up) because Impact had a show going on (Multiverse of Matches) at the same time, which led to an interim championship match between Mercedes Martinez and Willow Nightingale in which Martinez won. The date of Purrazzo vs. Martinez is unknown and the announcement of the match might be as long as the "Veer is coming" vignettes. Plus, Deonna is doing the whole "Champ-Champ storyline" in which it's an open challenge in which she puts either the ROH Women's Championship or the AAA Reina de Reyes Championship on the line. This past Impact, she successfully defended the ROH Women's Championship against the aforementioned Willow Nightingale. Next Saturday is Impact Rebellion in which she defends her AAA Championship against a returning Taya Valkyrie. Maybe Mercedes Martinez shows up? But if she doesn't, who knows when her vs. Deonna will happen.

The so called "Forbidden Door" between Impact and AEW only benefitted male wrestlers. A grand total of zero Impact Knockouts went through that door and Thunder Rosa showed up at Slammiversary last summer and that was it. It's really a shame as Impact has one of the best female divisons, both in terms of talent and booking in all of wrestling. Jordynne Grace, Deonna Purrazzo, Havok, Rosemary, Su Yung, Kimber Lee, Tasha Steele, Tenille Dashwood, Chelsea Green, Alisha Edwards and Madison Rayne would have given the AEW Women's Division a major boost via the Forbidden Door.

I feel like the AEW women's division needs more feuds or could benefit from some story angles. A lot of women seem to be just treading water outside of the title picture.

Even NXT gives their women more to do. They had Natalya go down to start angle with Cora Jade.

I think it's a good example of why they need writers. They don't need writers to just do all the writing, but help out the talent, so they can help craft stories. Khan seems to expect all his wrestlers to be writers, and they aren't. Look at Sammy.

I wonder if the younger wrestlers or talent from the Indies pitch ideas to Khan or are happy to just turn up and collect a paycheck. If I was a wrestler who wasn't in the title picture then I would at least be asking for some storyline or feud on Dark or Elevation to be involved in rather than just generic local talent quash matches.

Quick Dynamite, Rampage and Battle of the Belts II thoughts.

Punk vs Penta was ok, it's the best ive seen Penta wrestle as Punk wasn't going to indulge the usual convoluted tomfoolery Penta engages in and the finish was cool.

Jurassic Express vs ReDragon was a bit spotty but it was ok, FTR got a huge reaction when they came out at the end but the truck cut the staredown with ReDragon off midway. I'm not sure where they are going with ReDragon but FTR should be taking the AEW tag belts very soon.

The Wardlow/MJF build is going well but booking Wardlow against the Butcher?

I enjoyed Starks & Hobbs vs Swerve and Keith Lee, it's a solid mid-card feud that bas had a natural build to this tag match and it delivered, I liked seeing Starks getting his shine in his return home.

Joe vs Suzuki was a bit disappointing, way too much chopping for me, Joe winning the ROH TV title was fine I guess, the debut of the new Giant Gobzalez wasn't though, I know he's some NBA guy but he's awkward and cumbersome and like Giant Gonzalez he looks nervous to do any strike or move to the point it doesn't look like he could break an egg, I hope Joe isn't stuck trying to get this choad over for long.

Page vs Cole for the AEW title on Rampage was bland, these guys are not good at these type of matches, instead of looking like a wild brawl it was just a bunch of spots strung together with tables and chairs added in. I'm glad Page won as I think Punk can do more with him than he can with Cole at this point.

Sammy vs Scorpio was a good, athletic match, they dialled back the highspots and wrestled, Scorpio had the crowd with him on a simple sequence of backbreakere as Sammy sold into a comeback. The finish with fans popping for Paige going at Tay and the lowblow finish signalled the heel turn for Sammy even though Taz and Excalibur had to clue Tony in, Tay cemented it when she started giving Sammy the full on tounge in celebration, then Tony got it lol.

Gresham vs Dalton Castle was a different kind of match, very mat based and Castle had some unique throws. The aftermath was more Jay Lethal and GG 2.0 shenanigans with a Joe run-in.

Thunder Rosa vs Nyla Rose was decent, Nyla knows how to work as a monster and Rosa is good as an underdog babyface, she did a great job of creating seperation with her offense before Nyla cut her off with her power. It was a little botchy in a couple of spots but I liked the way the match was a struggle with the contrast of styles and Rosa hit the flash pin out of the blue.

Punk vs Dustin and Jungle Boy vs Kyle O'Reilly on Dynamite this week should be good.

The problem to me is most of them can't cut a promo to save their lives, Britt and Jade are the only 2 that can carry a storyline, and recently Nyla's cut a couple of decent promos. I like Thunder Rosa, she's got a likable charisma about her, but she can't talk, the recent promo between Toni Storm and Jamie Hayter was brutal, Shida is a mediocre worker who's promos are taped and she just shouts and Tay has just gotten into an angle with Paige VanZant but I'm guessing Lambert will do the bulk of the talking as Tay is awful on the mic. WWE can go ten women deep on their roster without blinking and they can all work and talk to a decent level.

In all honesty, LA Knight, while a solid wrestler, is better manager material.
I dunno, I'm sure LA will excel as a manager but it seems a waste havinh a guy that looks a million bucks, and talk like it too, as a manager. Hopefully it's a duel role.
