I couldn't hear it at all till I turned the game sound off completely and unplugged all other devices in the room and the kitchen. Even then the hard drive almost drowned it out (couldn't play Gears without having it plugged in).

thanks.

that does sound quieter than my Pro.

btw.....you play games of an external drive, right?

have you noticed any increases in load times playing off of the external?

I've heard the X's internal drive is supposed to be faster with load times, but didn't know if that also applies to externals.

Yes external. I haven't noticed but I haven't compared the same game on internal and external.

I do wonder if the speed improvements apply to external as well.

Wouldn't be great for me if it didn't as I much play most things on my external and can move it between Xboxes.

yeah, external drives do make it convenient to move your gaming life across Xboxes.

btw.....does your external have its own ac adapter/power source?

in general, would you recommend an external that runs on its own power source vs the type that run off the console's power?

I have one with an external power source for X1 and one without for 360. More convenient if they don't have a separate power source and that drive also makes a fair bit of noise which I know bothers you. But I think a lot of them have separate power sources as you go into the higher capacity ones.

thanks for the info.

yeah, I noticed anything above 4GB usually requires a separate power source, but I didn't know that about the noise. that would be a deal breaker for me.

I don't know if all the high capacity drives with a separate power source make a lot of noise but it's possible. Do older consoles bother you for how loud they are/were? I know the 360 could be really loud.

hmm....yeah, I remember the 360 being jet engine loud. the PS3, if I recall, wasn't too bad.

and I'd say loud fan noise bothers me to an extent. but if it's "normal" then I can live with it. but if it's abnormal ( like a grinding/ticking noise, or erratic revving up and down ), then I wouldn't accept it.

anyways, it looks like some new 4K player models were announced from Sony and Panasonic during CES 2018 this week. Sony ones releases this month with the Panasonic ones in the Spring.

so, I think I'm going to wait and see what those models have to offer.

still think I'm leaning towards getting a standalone, dedicated 4K player.

I don't know what it is, but I can't connect to the Xbox One as a console. I have the S, the Switch and the PS4 and I mainly just use my S for a blu ray player. Maybe it's the severe lack of worthwhile exclusives, or the clunky UI, or something else. I don't know. I still feel like the Xbox is struggling to make a case for itself.

in your case, it sounds like lack of exclusives to get you to play your S.

The X can certainly make the case as being the best place to play multi-plats - but that's the X and comes at a steep cost.

But Xbox desperately needs more exclusives beyond just the Halos, Gears, and Forzas. It needs something to make you say "Yah, I need an Xbox to play THAT game."

and right now, for me, I just don't see that in the near term.

Hopefully we get some new exclusives revealed this year at E3. But even still, that would mean those games are still a year or more away. So I don't know how that helps the situation this year.

And when we get into 2019 or 2020, then we'll all be starting to think about the PS5 and the next Xbox.

I think they’ve given up on this gen and are trying to lay the ground to try and be competitive when the next gen consoles drop.

but if they give off that vibe and impression, that doesn't really incentive customers to go out and buy an Xbox ( be it an S or X ) this gen.

Customers, like myself, will just wait and see what they'll offer next gen.

which is a shame because I do want to be part of the Xbox/MS ecosystem. And the X is an impressive beast of a machine.

It's more that we're trying to dig into what might be going on without really knowing rather than them intentionally giving off that vibe. If they had some major exclusives planned, they would likely be wasted at the end of a gen as they always have more impact at the beginning of a new one. I think the X is a base on which to build on for the next console so they are focusing on the hardware and UI and this should leave them free to go for it at launch on the next gen. I just hope they are planning to bring big exclusives at that time as well as big console specs or most PS4 guys will be unlikely to give it a look.

true.

and with MS, they may no longer be playing the traditional "gen" game cycle as we've known it. so, the transition to the "next gen" may be more seamless and smooth and feel more like a "continuation" as opposed to a giant leap.

Yeah I think they've had a couple of years of crisis talks and the X is the beginning of the long term future strategy. Getting the hardware right was an inportant first step but it will take longer to see results. It takes at least 10 years of Spencer to start making up for 1 year of Mattrick. :csad:

yeah, it does make you wonder what the current landscape would look like if MS didn't have the disastrous reveal of the Xbox One and if Spencer had been in charge then.

guess we'll never know. so hopefully the X is a solid foundation for the future.

and hopefully they don't repeat the same mistakes they made with the Xbox One.

and hopefully I have much better luck with the next Xbox. I don't know what the heck happened this gen, but I was unusually unlucky with the X1. :(

By the end of next year I'm sure we will have heard about plans for both consoles. Can't imagine them launching later than 2021, and even 2020 might be on the table for at least one of them.

^ I agree. I think 2019 will be the earliest we may hear about the next consoles.

just hope the PS5 will be BC with at least PS4 games. and includes a 4K player........cough.......cough......

The Switch is doing amazingly. The X1 must have been boosted by the X.

Ha, they better!

2019 seems like both the earliest and latest we'd hear something! Therefore it must be 2019 :woot:

yeah, I have a feeling we'll start hearing the 1st rumblings of next gen in 2019, I just don't think any new gen console will release in 2019.

too soon, imo, for both Sony and MS.

I could actually seeing PS4 going strong into 2020 or 2021 given the momentum and the games still on the horizon.

The consoles will be fine till then, especially with Pro and X versions. 2019 seems like the time we we will first start hearing about them and 2020/2021 probably when we might actually see the first one release. Certainly wouldn’t expect it any later than 2022.
