Xbox The Xbox One - Part 13

They should let you control the brightness. I don't know if there is a way but sometimes I want it dimmer and sometimes brighter.

Would a firmware update be able to update an existing drive? It would be nice if they could.

anyways, I just ordered a portable 4TB external for $100. plus Titanfall 2 Deluxe for $16!

I think that 4TB will last me a long while and will provide the extra space I need for the X.

if the X internal drive offers noticeable improvements in terms of gameplay and load times, then I will use the 4TB drive as "long term storage" ( my library so to speak ) and just transfer the most current game(s) to the internal drive.

of course, if the X internal drive difference isn't that meaningful, then I'll just continue to do what I'm doing now and just running everything off of the external.
I dont' know, don't know that much about how hard drives work. But I'll be looking into them for other reasons (pc linked) soon and it might come up. 4TB should be good for a fair while. Yeah we'll need clarity on how the speed works on internal vs external but that's what I'd do too.

Yes!! Batman: Arkham Origins ( Disc Only ) finally BC!!

Cool.

exactly. there should be a simple option in the settings to let us adjust the brightness/dimness of the background image.

anyways, I did one more comparison test. This time with Rise of Tomb Raider, which is actually the game I was most interested in testing since I know Rise is a Pro Enhanced game with 4K setting.

And to my surprise, the 2 versions were quite close - closer than I expected.

Yes, the Pro version ( as with the other games ) does look a bit clearer and crisper overall with slightly better textures and levels of detail.

But the X1S version wasn't that far behind. It still looked pretty darn good.

So, once again, there was a slightly noticeable improvement with the Pro version.

I wonder if Rise will get an X patch and if that will make the Xbox version on par or better than the Pro.

If it doesn't look much different on the X than the S then it won't be worth making the move for many. I guess it might be in terms of FPS or loading time improvements but don't know if that is worth buying a new console for. Otherwise they need to run games that will make demands of the new hardware.

yeah, that's my biggest concern about the X. not only compared to the S but also to the Pro.

If the X does indeed require you to download larger 4K patches, and since it costs $100 more, if it doesn't offer noticeable improvements over the Pro, then it may be a hard sell to consumers other than the diehard Xbox fans.

Of course, that doesn't take into account any differences in performance, frame rates, loading times, etc. But the Pro may occupy that "sweet spot" of being "good enough" in terms of graphics and improvements without the extra cost and disadvantages ( larger files ) associated with the X.

I know that after doing my comparison tests, I do have a new found appreciation for my Pro. The games already look pretty darn good on my Pro, and they do look slightly better than the S, and the Pro does that without requiring any extra 4K assets or larger files.

How much better will/can the X look? How much better will/can the X perform?

that's the question.

Plus, the Pro/PS4 will continue to have one more advantage over the X/Xbox that's harder to overcome. And that's the sheer number of exclusives and overall variety of games which is the area Xbox is lacking in the most.

Will look forward to the technical comparison articles between the S, Pro and X (and hopefully also against the original X1 and PS4).

^ yep. especially Digital Foundry. I always enjoy their analysis articles and videos, even if most of the truly tech stuff goes right over my head. but at least they are professional and thorough.

hopefully we start getting such comparisons soon.

Yeah I love their tech articles when they're reviewing new pc cards and comparing performance on a bunch of benchmark, demanding, well known games with the new card against all its older rivals.

I'd love to see a comparison vid of Assassin Creed Origin running on the Pro vs the X vs the S.

so far, everything I've seen of ACO has been on the X, which makes sense since it looks like MS has paid to secure "first" marketing rights.

but I think that would be a good game to compare.

Yeah that would be a good one. I wonder what the best looking multiplatform game will be by the time it comes out.

^ I wouldn't be surprised if it is ACO or maybe Shadow of War.

Anything due out from now till launch that might compete?

Hmm, will have to see. The first game looked good for an MMO.

Regarding that 4GCommunity hotspot I ordered the average speed I hit is like 13M up and 6M down but it's actually hit up to 45 a couple times so it varies. The latency is around 32ms.

Not a bad upload speed at least.

well, the ticking fan noise on S seems to be getting louder and more noticeable. :(

it became more apparent this past weekend when I rented a few Blu-Rays to watch. all throughout the film, I could hear that constant ticking noise, and by the end of the film, it seemed louder than the start ( and louder than when I first set up the console ). And then, I tried to unwind by listening to some music files and the noise was definitely noticeable and distracting.

The following night, I used my Pro to watch the other film, and.....silence. Sure, you can hear a fan going, but it's normal fan noise. not the distracting rattling/ticking noise coming from the S.

So, yeah, I'm going to contact MS support about this fan noise issue. But it has certainly become an annoying distraction when I'm trying to watch a movie or listen to music, which is a big part of why I got the S.

sigh........it's always something wrong when it comes to the Xbox. if not one issue, then something else. :(

I swear.........Sony must have placed a curse on my home or something to ward off any attempts by Xbox to infiltrate my gaming room.......lol. sigh.......

So weird. I have 3 X1s and loads of 360s. Must have got lucky.

mind sharing some of your Xbox luck with me?? lol.

but yeah, it is weird. I've been buying and playing consoles since the NES days, and I've never had such bad luck with a console as I've had with the Xbox One.

I've bought different bundles, different models, across different years, and I always encounter some kind of problem, in one form or another.

And I know some other posters here will give me flack, but I'm not being paranoid either.

I gave the S the benefit of the doubt, and bought this latest console in "good faith", going on the assumption that it was my router causing problems last year.

And what do I get as my reward? A console with a noisy fan...........:csad:

The only "saving grace" this time is that the X is coming out in a few months. And I'm trying to hold out until then, but this is really starting to test my patience and faith in the whole Xbox brand.

Yeah only a few months till the X. Maybe all these other consoles really want you to get the X lol.

haha........yeah. either that or it's been telling me to stick with Sony.....lol.

well, with a faulty, noisy fan, I do have a legit reason to enforce my warranty, which should allow me to swap for the X and just pay the difference. which would certainly take care of the cost, as I'd only have to pay $150 or so.

so, maybe there's a silver lining to all of this and I can make lemonade out of this lemon......lol.

it's just that I was planning on waiting at least a year before upgrading, but it looks like the plan has been accelerated.

Hopefully, the fan on the X is much quieter with the liquid/vapor cooling system they're using.

I would certainly hope so, cuz the X is supposed to be about premium "craftsmanship."

Sounds like a plan. The X will be the definitive version of this console and be cruising on standard games. No reason for it to be getting stressed out and coughing and spluttering all over the place. A few more months!

^ yeah, we shall see.

I just hope my apparent bad luck with the Xbox One won't carry over to the X.....lol.

Hopefully. Really hope they nailed things finally with this console. The S was a good step forward at least.
