Xbox The Xbox One - Part 13

I'm sure Sony/Nintendo being Japanese companies plays a role in that bias. plus the fact that Xbox doesn't have much of a presence in Japan and doesn't sell well there.

and I agree about the lack of AAA exclusives shown at E3 this year.

it really felt like Scalebound left a huge hole in the lineup. Scalebound should have been the showcase launch title for the X. The full exclusive that could really show off the power of the X.
Oh yeah, of course. I forgot the X1 is nearly non existent there.

It would have taken a lot more than Scalebound for me to have been happy with the conference. And with it gone (as well as Feble Legends) it almost felt like they're going backwards.

Scalebound, Crackdown 3, and Forza 7, along with smaller titles like Super Lucky Tale and Cuphead, would have made for a pretty solid fall/holiday lineup of exclusives.

combine that with 3rd party titles like Middle Earth and AC Origins, with the X being the best place to run those titles, and that would have been pretty good, imo.

but I agree. there'd have to be more than Scalebound. something to get us excited for the future.

maybe at Gamescom in a few weeks they will start teasing new projects. but they definitely need to get some going for next year and beyond.

Forza's always top notch but it's not much of a surprise as it's always going to be there lol. The rest are pretty much sending me to sleep just talking about them! Yes 3rd party titles will be more relevant again when the X is out but they'll need more than that to impress. The machine will surely speak for itself but they should really invest in some exclusives that push the system to the max and make games that can't be replicated elsewhere at that level (aside from on pc).

^ I agree, Iceman. hopefully they will reveal more things soon.

oh, and Iceman, just curious, but does your X1S make any kind of low-level "whirring/ticking" noise ( which I'm assuming is from the fan )?

Mine does, and it's somewhat audible when you walk into the room and stand near it. even when sitting back to watch a DVD or play games, I can hear the ticking/whirring sound slightly. Even when you 1st turn the console on and it's idle, not running anything, you can hear the ticking.

just wanted to see if you have this noise yourself and if it's normal sound.

I've read conflicting reports about it online.

thanks.

Game console noise has never bothered me on any console. I don't normally notice as I have the game sound up or am wearing a headset. I'll check next time I remember though.

^ thanks, Iceman. I appreciate that.

I just want to hear someone else's experience so I have a frame of reference. I can't remember if I heard it when I owned the S last year. I do remember my Advanced Warfare OG Xbox 1 making a slight grinding/chirping noise.

Hopefully, it's just the normal noise of the console. My Pro, after all, can sound like a jet engine when playing games ( as did my PS4 and 360 )......lol.

but you know my terrible luck with consoles ( and the Xbox ) this gen. :o :oldrazz:

ok, in regards to the fan noise, I found these vids on YouTube.

the 1st two are a good approximation of the noise I'm hearing from my console - a sort of low-level, constant whirr/purr/ticking/clicking sound. It's NOT the louder grindy/buzzy noise that you can hear in other vids.

[YT]mPKuhVKankk[/YT]

[YT]4shsEaAK4OQ[/YT]

These next 2 vids are of "quieter" fans. You can still hear the whirr/purr but it doesn't sound like the other 2 vids.

[YT]unxIBwKWc70[/YT]

[YT]0jWEpGUA6fA[/YT]

So, does this mean my fan is indeed faulty? I really hope not. :csad:

from reading on the net, it does seem like this is a somewhat common problem with the S, with some folks having to get it replaced several times before getting a unit that's "whisper quiet."

while other people say is perfectly normal.

I don't know how those Japanese companies that don't publish on Xbox view the situation. Is it much to do with Sony and Nintendo being Japanese too? I'd like to see them come across too.

Microsoft better reveal something next year. Last E3 was very disappointing in that respect.
it's that thing where micro soft put a wieird stigma on them selves being mostly game where shooters inthe early yeatrs they tried adding other genre's even some japanes titles and are still doinbg so .

but japan not looking at them cause of their view and what they met some certain gamers mentality in west that are jerky and sadly too vocal and it kinda ruined things for Xbox in the east.

So they are hving ahardtime in japan and most of aisa. japan does support nintendo ( first game system maker and nationa hero) and sony causeit's from their home to a degree and done alot.

but there are alot of factors at play.

Ok, here's Part 2 of my S vs Pro comparison.

Last night, I compared 2 more games, Diablo III and Skyrim.

First up, Diablo III. There was a slight yet noticeable difference between the two. Like the previous games I compared, the Pro version did look overall a bit sharper, crisper, and smoother. When I switched to the S, it was like someone applied a slight "blurry/fuzzy" filter to the game, and the edges around the character and models had more jaggies.

Next, Skyrim. This game was a bit harder to compare, due to the open world nature of the game and thus more variables to contend with. And of the games I compared, Skyrim looked the closest between the 2 versions, and both versions looked pretty darn good. Again, the Pro version looks just slightly crisper and sharper with slightly more layers of detail, I suppose. But the difference wasn't as noticeable as with the other games, and the S version looked amazing, too.

And the S versions of the other games looked great too. but there's no denying the Pro makes the games look a bit better.

And I must say doing this little experiment has changed my opinion on the Pro. I guess when you are so used to something you tend to take it for granted. But I had been of the opinion that I could never tell any meaningful difference with all that extra power.

However, now that I can make direct comparisons with the S, I now admit I was wrong. You can tell the difference between the two - enough to be noticeable. And to be frank, it's now kind of hard to "unsee" that difference. While I wait for the X, I had planned to use my X1S even for multiplats, but now I'm not so sure.

And this does make me both excited and a bit cautious about the X's prospects. If the Pro already makes games look noticeably better, then I'd assume the X should look even better with all that extra power ( plus the need to download 4K assets ).

But, that does kind of set a high bar for the X. How much better than the Pro will the X look? I'd say it has to make games look and perform noticeably better to justify the extra $100, the need to download larger 4K files, and the need to have very high internet speeds and data limits.

As far as I know, my Pro doesn't require to me to download larger 4K asset files ( maybe it does, but I haven't noticed ). During the time I've owned the Pro, I haven't seen a dramatic increase in download usage and I haven't had to increase my internet speed.

Sure, it's not as powerful as the X will be and doesn't have all the extra features like a 4K player ( a big mistake on Sony's part ). But the Pro does already offer better visual quality in games. And the big question will be - how can the X top that?

Thanks for that. I like reading these comparisons.

Surely the games are going to look a fair amount better when you download the 4K versions on X? I haven't really looked into this much though yet. Does Pro not have 4K versions of games?

I'm glad you like my comparisons. There are a few more I want to test out.

And these experiments help me out, too. I now appreciate my Pro more, lol.

I think the Pro is mostly "near 4K." though I believe there might be some "true 4K" games out there. Guess it depends on the game and the dev and how they "Pro Patched" the game.

but as far as I know, and I don't recall reading anything about it, I don't have to download larger 4K files on the Pro.

maybe I'm just not playing the right games, though. I'm actually curious about this now and will look more into it.

edit:

here's a list of Pro enhanced games and their resolutions and benefits:

http://www.ign.com/wikis/playstation-4/PS4_Pro_Game_Upgrades_and_Differences

I see some games listed at 4K or Native 4K. Diablo III is listed at "4K". maybe that explains why the Pro version looks noticeably better than the S?

I wasn't aware of so many Pro enhanced games. I guess I've been underestimating the Pro all this time.......lol.

I'll have to look into it more when the X arrives. Will be nice to see what a 4K campaign game running at a smooth 30 FPS but with ambitious graphical effects looks like on a good 4KTV.

I've never noticed any noise, but on checking now realise that's because my Surface Pro (on which I'm currently typing) and Sky cable box make much more noise. When I go right up to the S then yes it does make a consistent low level noise. I guess it might disturb someone if the rest of their room was in silence.

if the Pro is indeed downloading larger Pro patches for games, then it's doing it in a way that's not intrusive. cuz I haven't noticed some abnormally large file download that spikes my data usage.

But, I might actually test that out this weekend by uninstalling and reinstalling Rise of Tomb Raider, cuz that is a Pro Enhanced games that is supposed to run at "4K".

I'll let you know what I find there.

glad I'm not the only one. The thing is that I'm trying to determine if it's "normal" low-level noise or something more. And again, there's conflicting info online, with some saying they've got whisper quiet X1S.

And yeah, my room is largely silent apart from when I turn on my consoles.

So when it's just the S on, I can definitely hear it.

even when I'm watching a DVD or playing a game with the volume turned up, I can still hear it. and of course when there are quiet times in a movie or game, I can hear the S fan even more.

it's just "there enough" to be a tad annoying. And it is slightly disruptive when I'm trying to watch something, which was the main purpose of the getting the S.

But I'll keep investigating that and keep an eye ( or ear ) on it. if it starts turning into a grinding/buzzing sound, then that's a definite no-no.

I really want to get to the bottom of this 4K question and what exactly we're getting with different versions of games and different versions of consoles and what differences there are between near 4K, native 4K etc. And the differences have to be noticeable to a layperson really for it to be worth it, even if not a massive difference.

I think it sounds like you have an ear for these noises which I don't, but given that extra sensitivity I can imagine it could become quite an annoying issue when you're trying to relax.

yeah, this 4K stuff can get quite confusing......lol.

Yeah all of those make sense.

speaking of Nintendo being a national hero for Japan, during the Closing Ceremony of the Brazil Olympics, when they handed it off to Japan for the next Summer Games, Mario was featured in the marketing package, and on stage, the Prime Minister of Japan ( I think ) popped up through a Mario pipe wearing a Mario hat.

so yeah.........the Tokyo Summer Games are going to be awesome!! lol.

Really? Haha that's pretty crazy. Can't imagine our PM doing that!

Iceman, I found this vid interesting and thought you might like it as well.

it's a cool assembly/disassembly vid of the Xbox One X! pretty neat to see the internal components and how it all fits together!

Thanks! Can't really watch it with the volume on right now but will give it a look this wekend.

^ no problem. I think you'll like it. :)
