^ yeah, the lack of AAA exclusives is the Xbox's achilles heel right now.

in fact, I just read an article the other day about a Witcher style MMORPG made by Obsidian ( Fallout: New Vegas people, I believe ). It was pitched using 360 hardware and was supposed to be an X1 launch title.

And it sounded pretty ambitious, too. like having "million player" raids or something. And it sounded like MS was pretty ambitious about it, too. until they started adding more stuff, pulling it in different directions, before ultimately pulling the plug on it.

in fact, kind of sounds like what happened to Scalebound.

so I read that article and shook my head. it's a shame cuz it sounded like a cool concept and yet another exclusive opportunity MS let slip.

so, yeah, they really need to up their exclusive game next year and beyond.

edit: and here's the article I was talking about.

Thanks for that. I heard something about this on Neogaf but didn't have a clue what they were talking about. It's a shame of course (again) but at least they are looking at projects like this and you have to think if they are turning them down (maybe something didn't quite add up) they are at least going to be looking at similar opportunities to replace it. I guess I was more disappointed about the likes of Fable and Scalebound because a big chink of the work had been done and from what we saw on Fable Legends at least, looked quite salvageable.

yeah, it's a shame. would be nice if they could revisit some of these projects like Fable Legend and Scalebound. but I wonder if those are lost causes now.

If Fable Legends is a lost cause maybe they could use these assets in the next Fable game. Don't know if that kind of thing is ever done to be honest. I can imagine Scalebound's gameplay not being workable I guess.

will there even be another Fable game?

didn't they shut that studio down?

and I wonder who owns the Scalebound IP. MS or the dev?

Don't know about Scalebound as we don't know if that (seemingly original) gameplay mechanism works well over the course of a whole game, I could see it becoming unmanageable or at least resource intensive. Would be surprised if we never see a Fable game again, even if from a new studio and in the longer term.

^ yeah, I hope the Fable franchise isn't dead.

and if Scalebound was going to be resource intensive, to me that just ups the case for why it should have been an X showcase title. but then, I guess, if it could only run on the X but not well on the S/OG X1, then it would almost be like an X exclusive, and MS doesn't want that.

and maybe the actual project really wasn't in a workable state when MS decided to pull the plug.

maybe someday we'll learn the real story just like that article about that Obsidian game.

Maybe both those projects would be more feasible on the next gen Xbox where they don't need to make sure it also works on the low-powered original X1.

perhaps.

I do think the base X1 and PS4 are holding back the X and Pro in some respects.

but I guess that's to be expected with these mid-gen consoles.

Definitely. They can't fully do their own thing with that restriction in mind.

yeah. but they do provide nice glimpses into the future of what the next gen can bring.

it does make you think, though. were the base PS4 and X1 released a few years too early?

should they have waited a few more years and released 4K capable machines like the Pro and X at the start of this gen?

The tech for the long-ass gen before was so old near the end though. Also at the time they didn't know for sure how well 4K would do. Maybe that gen should have ended faster and the gen that took over would have come to an end around now and we'd have PS5 and X2 equivalents now instead of mid-gen refreshes.

yeah. good point.

4K tech didn't really start taking off until last year and this year, and the Pro/X are kind of pointless without 4K tvs.

maybe with these mid-gen consoles, they are conditioning us to accept shorter gen cycles and more frequent upgrades like the smartphone market.

honestly, I don't mind if that means newer tech more frequently, as long as the new consoles are BC.

The PS5 has to be BC with PS4 games at least. And I expect the next Xbox to be BC with X1, 360, and OG Xbox.

I want to be able to carry my existing library over to the next console, allowing me to trade the old gen console in for the new one to bring costs down.

BC going forward is going to be very important with all these digital purchases. I'd love more regular hardware refreshes as long as they kept up with BC.

still, though, I don't think consoles should have as frequent cycle refreshes as smartphones. certainly not a new model or new gen every year.

in other news, the August NPD #s are out and once again, Switch is dominating the hardware sales while the Xbox is having another rough month.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-switch-outsells-ps4-xbox-one-in-us-august/1100-6453355/

I figured with all the X1 S deals and sales, including throwing in a free game ( some places even throw in 2 games ), Xbox would get some kind of bump.

but for the last few NPD reports, the X1 has been having a rough time.

I know waiting for the X plays some part, but I doubt every single potential Xbox buyer is going to buy the $500 X. And by now, they should know if the X is right for them or if the S is more appropriate. And with all the S deals and sales, if you want to get an X, now would be a good time to do so.

but, it seems, demand for the Xbox overall is declining. :(

hopefully that means there's pent up demand for the X during the Holidays.

Not as frequent as smartphones of course. More like the frequency of the older generations before 360/PS3, maybe a year or 2 less.

I have some news onthe hololens and it being used by high school artists from Canadian news AKA CTV News. Also below that detail's on Xbox one's back wards compatability & DVR upgrades .

Them adding Arkham Origins to the BC list is all I needed.
I'm still upset they didn't remaster it completely, but that's better than nothing.

Yes glad about that. Still need to play it and hopefully it plays better on the X1X.

they should release a remastered Arkham Origins with all of the DLC included.

Holy ****!!

Forza 7 install size will be around 95 GB! and that's BEFORE the 4K X update.

https://www.forzamotorsport.net/en-us/news/wir_9_15_17

45 will be on disc. So, around 50 GB for the patch. And then, ANOTHER LARGE UPDATE on November 7 for the 4K assets.

How big will the X patch be? Another 40-50 GBs??

that's insane.

luckily, MS is working on that "Intelligent Delivery System" for the downloads. but 95 GBs just for the non-X enhanced version of the game is pushing it.

makes you wonder just how big these X enhanced games will be in terms of file sizes.

it's going to be a pain in the *** for those of us with limited internet speeds and data caps.

We're basically adding in a second game in terms of GB with the Day one update... sucks really
