The Xbox One

No, it's getting a media centric version of Windows 10 along with a new UI for the dashboard.

With Xbox getting Windows 10 isn't it essentially a weak gaming PC?
That's a funny way of looking at it lol. Getting a version of Windows 10 for free is a good thing. What are current consoles now then? Weak gaming pcs which don't even have anything resembling Windows 10 or other pc operating system? Just a useless rectangle of plastic! :woot:

Your mouse will soon work with your Xbox One

Beneath that shiny exterior, the Xbox One is, basically, a glorified gaming PC in a slightly smaller frame. As such, wouldn't it be great if you could play RTS games on the machine with your keyboard and mouse? The hardware can already support the former, and if Microsoft's Phil Spencer is to be believed, the latter is coming in the near future. The executive was asked on Twitter if it'd be possible to stream games from a Windows machine to the Xbox -- in the opposite direction to how the company has set up its game streaming system. In response, he said that it'd require keyboard and mouse support for it to work, crucially adding "those aren't far away."

I don't care about PC gaming and don't have a PC or windows on my phone and tablet anyway, So I don't give a damn about all of this Xbox on Windows 10 stuff.

If PC games like Star Wars Old Republic were able to be streamed on Xbox One then that would have been truly nice!

That is incorrect.

The dashboard update is just that... a dashboard update that changes the UI. Like when Blades got axed on the 360.

no. the UI update is more than just a cosmetic facelift.

the X1 OS is going to go from being Windows 8 based to Windows 10.

so Windows 10, in some form, is coming to the X1, too.

it's part of MS's unifying Windows 10 ecosystem vision.

All of the links you posted are not official sources and the author's clearly don't understand what's happening. The Xbox One dashboard is only cosmetically based on Windows 8 and the dashboard update will only cosmetically be based on windows 10. It's only game streaming at this point, anything else is speculation.

If they ever actually did launch any kind of version of the dashboard that is actually windows based under the hood, it will be a security nightmare.

I wonder how mods are going to be incorporated for Fallout 4 on X1. Unless Microsoft are going to handle the whole process themselves that also sounds like a possible security nightmare for what is otherwise an easier to protect closed platform.

in the 2nd article I posted, here's a quote from Phil Spencer.

"One of the monthly updates that you'll get on [Xbox One] is gonna change from the Windows 8 kernel that's in there now to the Windows 10 kernel," Microsoft Xbox lead Phil Spencer said during a group interview in Redmond, Washington, yesterday. "I know a lot of people are excited about things like Cortana and other features they see on Windows 10. Obviously getting on the Windows 10 kernel -- well, it's not really the kernel -- but Windows 10 OS inside of Xbox One is an important first step to unlock a lot of what [Microsoft's Joe Belfiore] showed."

so according to Spencer himself, they are putting Windows 10 "inside" X1 - in some form or another.

and in that same quote, he directly contradicts himself. " its the windows 10 kernel, its not the windows 10 kernal" People are reading wayyyy to much into whats going on. It's just game streaming and a face lift.

well, I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Oh thanks, that makes sense. Don't know why I didn't think of the dev handling it lol.

I hope if the mod experiment proves successful on the X1, then that feature will come to the PS4 in due time.

When is the dashboard update coming?

When is the dashboard update coming?

sometime in the fall.

if I had to guess, I think the new UI/dashboard plus backwards compatibility will be released before November.

why November? Because Fallout 4 releases 11/10. and a preorder bonus for the X1 version is a digital ( I guess ) copy of Fallout 3.

which means the system needs to be backwards compatible by then to be able to play Fallout 3.

Can you start seeing movies that you rent in the video marketplace while it downloads?

Start watching them you mean? No, I don't think so.

Lot of Xbox live problems recently. And the last few days my internet has been fine, plus I've been playing for hours on 360 every day but my X1 online not working.

Yeah, I've been having problems since Saturday. Some games I can't even play.

I don't play online much and so I haven't noticed anything big but I have been having a bit of a problem where my console doesn't connect online automatically like it is set to do

I've also been having some issues, particularly with my Bone not connecting immediately to Live. Also noticed my achievements were kind of laggy, but I assumed it was due to the games I was playing and not Live, but it might be since I think they're Live only now.

Yeah a few different friends have said they didn't get achievements when they should have and then loads of them popped at once. Plus I've had issues connecting to parties with specific friends (on 360). (X1 still not back online).

I suspect that Fallout 3 will be up before BC goes live. My email said "when Fallout 4 gets cleared.." There's several games waiting to be cleared for the next few waves of BC games.. I guess we'll see.
