What's her name again... Michonne, Michelle? She always keeps to herself and never talks to nobody... Hm.

Oh well. There goes the 'redhead Zandaya struts into Homecoming looking like a model and utters the jackpot line'/She's All That moment theory.

Well I still don't believe that she is Mary Jane.

I guess Peter will never hit the jackpot :o

Peter doesn't gamble anyways. :o

Hot MJ at door: "Face it, Tiger! You just hit the Jackpot!"
Prudish Peter: "I'm sorry miss, I don't gamble."

(Peter shuts door on MJ)

Prudish Peter: "I'm sorry miss, I don't gamble."
Accurate Peter: I'm sorry miss, but tiger is not my spirit animal.
*crawls away*

Nonviolent peter: I'm sorry miss, I don't hit.
*verbally confronts away*

Facially Challenged Peter: I'm sorry miss, I can't face it.
*has no face*

what if Liz will help Zendaya to have a makeover after this scene then she will return to the ball looking great, like the scene in breakfast club? Or is this the homecoming dance already or just some random party?

Or maybe after homecoming Liz turn down Peter, then Peter out of frustration accepted aunt may's setting him up for a blind date. Which happens to be MJ/Zendaya. But this time with a total makeover. Then the jackpot scene at the end of the movie. Which will be a setup for ther friendship in the sequel.

Actually, going back to the "Face it, Tiger" reveal, I think they can still make that work simply by Zendaya's supposed transformation, given that she does end up being MJ. That said, she can still end up being Peter's Homecoming date but still not yet have any feelings for her until later...

Spot on.

Obviously in a movie you cant have Zendaya having her face obscured everytime she's around Peter ala Mr Wilson on Home Improvement, so how do you that portray that arc on film...

...you dress her down and make her dowdy.

Personally I think she is MJ, I hope she is MJ and when it comes out I shall be making a big bowl of popcorn and reading the posts here

Or like Sandy asking Frenchie to help her with a makeover after the race car scene in Grease? Then she'll show up at the end and say "Tell me about it stud Tiger."

yes, it would be a very good way to adapt the original from the comics whilst hitting the notes of the films they have said inspire this spider-man movie

I hope she is MJ as well, but only if she has the red hair, I'll be dissapointed if its a mkeover that keeps her normal hair colour

Of course you can keep her face obscured. Just don't cast the actress or keep it a cameo and have her only show up at the end, but only talked about beforehand. Having MJ looking frumpy throughout the movie only to have her change into the MJ we all know right at the end is going against who she has always been. And if it's not in this movie but in a sequel instead that Zendaya finally becomes MJ, then we've got to suffer through frumpy Michelle for more than one movie just for some little pay off they think we'll rave about.

It's like having such a boring and long-winded joke just for an eventual punch line. And when it gets there you've lost people along the way, and the punch line isn't even very funny at all.

The ugly duckling route would be such a cringeworthy, moronic and outdated cliche to take the character into.

That right there is the sole reason why I hope Zendaya isn't MJ.

Jon Watts seems to have taken the idea of a John Hughes film too literally, and seems to only plunder from the Breakfast Club's material. Hughes made other films. And it's only meant to capture the vibe of that era, not to shamelessly rip it off by directly transplanting aspects of that movie into this one. It seems to almost suggest that Watts doesn't really know how to fully make a Hughes movie if he has to plagiarise from that film. Unless it's the screenwriters who are guilty of this plagiarism.

Even something like Back to the Future has a close enough vibe and is from that same era. That kind of template would've been much better than the Breakfast Club.

I would've taken cues from Ferris Bueller and other Hughes movies, but nothing directly lifted like the character types, which the cast in this movie seem to have been forced into just for the sake of it.

Same.

Peter was a bit shallow in the comics, but not that shallow. If MJ was in the same room he was, he would definitely notice her, make up or no make up.

There were setpics of Spidey swinging with a redhead, I wasn't around here when those pics came so, how do people like her for MJ?

I remember those, but I don't think that's supposed to be her. Most likely an easter egg.

At this point I'm getting a headache 'cause this Zendaya thing is so mind-numbingly confusing to everyone.

those were 3 different girls with red hair, not one unfortunately... there were shots of all 3 standing together... honestly i think that was the studio having a little trolling fun going on

She is a fool, lol.

I'm starting to think that they wont be using Mary Jane in this trilogy, and Zendaya is a new-MCU created love interest who will take on the MJ mantle.

We've seen Mary Jane and Gwen in films already, we're getting Liz in this one, so they could be creating a new love interest for Peter.

I think she will be Michelle J. with the intention of Peter calling her MJ by the end of this film and future films.

But she was nothing like traditional comic MJ. What's the point of going in such a radical deviation when they haven't even exhausted all of their options with a more faithful interpretation? They haven't got the character right yet... We haven't seen any form of MJ in over decade so it's even more unnecessary. I'd prefer not to get an INO version of the character in the MCU.

Except we haven't seen a faithful adaptation of the MJ character. Kirsten Dunst's interpretation of her (no problem with Kirsten as an actress, she's great but the material she was given was underwhelming) is very much disliked by the majority of the fans. And Emma Stone's Gwen is generally well liked.

Having the character be in name only would be a slap in the face to the majority of Spider-Man fans, so no, I hope they don't go that route. No need for the moronic ugly duckling "Michelle Jane Watson" bullcrap. Zendaya's character so far is nothing like MJ, and these cliches aren't gonna excuse this decision they might have took.

I dunno. I could see a transition from insecure, troubled "ugly duckling" ("**** everyone and everything.") to insecure, troubled party girl ("Maybe this will make me happy.") to classic Mary Jane working very well, especially if Zendaya is in it for the long haul. Her character arc throughout the series could be learning to love all aspects of herself - nerdy and glamorous. It might not be what people want, which is fair, but I think it's an appropriate story for a young adult.

I'd be open to that. Always wanted her for Mary Jane so..
