I agree, they threw us a jumbled puzzle. I'm just trying to assemble the pieces.
IdkAt least she wouldn't be INO if they incorporated her comic backstory
the only plausible scenario that I would personally accept would have been if
they went the Hannah Montanna route. where Mary Jane "MJ" Watson is a popular teen model/actress. You see "hot/glamour" MJ (Zendaya) all over the billboards, magazines, tv, etc. The kids at school all talk about her.
But, MJ actually doesn't like all the spotlight and attention. She just wants to live a normal, low key life and fit in. So, she intentionally dresses down and frumpy looking and goes by the name of "Michelle." And she acts reserved and withdrawn, opposite to her "public" demeanor as MJ.
At school, she befriends Peter and Ned and she develops a secret crush on Peter. They treat her like a "normal" kid who's "one of them." However, she's disappointed to learn that Peter has his eyes on Liz who he asks to the Homecoming dance.
Through her interactions with Peter, who she can tell is hiding something, and maybe with Spidey, who she relates to as a "misunderstood" public figure, "Michelle" learns to embrace who she is and not feel like she has to hide behind a false identity.
So, on Homecoming night, after Peter gets dumped by Liz ( for constantly standing her up due to Spidey duties ), Michelle decides to act on her newfound courage and asks Peter if he'd like to go to the dance with her instead. He agrees, and "Michelle" shows up at his door as THE MARY JANE WATSON - y'know the famous teen model/actress.
She says to him "Face it, Tiger. You just hit the jackpot!"
The "twist" in the movie would have been that "hot MJ" is a constant presence throughout the film ( billboards, magazines, tv, etc. ). However, since Michelle looks and acts so totally different from model/actress MJ, the audience ( and Peter ) wouldn't put the two together until the end.

at least that's how I would have written it.
