Well we know that Marvel and Sony disagreed strongly on one aspect of the film and then came to a compromise. I suspect this was it. She is not Mary Jane. She is MJ.

I wonder if it will ever come out that it was this for sure?

like others have said, the disappointment comes from a string of ten years of mj being treated like garbage and all but written out of the comics. i don't know how much patience i have to just see what happens in the next one with michelle to judge—i've already waited and was patient with the TASM movies when they cast shailene and look where that went.

it's hard to hear that we have to wait for the full franchise to be allowed to judge a character when after one movie people were already complaining that andrew wasn't in character and didn't have the essence of peter right and that was a factor in their enjoyment of the movie. but i guess michelle/mj is just a side character so who cares as long as we get peter in high school (when his stories have always been more interesting anyway when he was an adult) right.

You know, you see pictures like this, and you just have to wonder. I'll admit, I was a little iffy when the initial rumors came around when she was first cast. I was looking for a more traditional look for MJ. But, pix like this and gifs showing "sass" for lack of a better word, warmed me up to the idea (I admit I still know nothing about her acting, but I heard positive stuff from the reviews). Just give her red hair, and we're all set.

Not sure what their plans are for the character, but if she is to be the MJ Pete ultimately ends up with, I think she should have gone by the name Jane. Then play up the whole "Plain Jane" angle. Keep her sardonic characterization, but give her insecurities as why she doesn't connect with others. Then find out Jane is her middle name and her first is Mary. Then she can have an arc where she becomes the MJ we know from the comics, by coming out of her shell. I think that is what the Allison storyline from Breakfast Club was trying to go for. Coming out of her shell, not becoming something you're not (like say Sandy in Grease).

Just some thoughts. But I hardly think this is them trying to push away fans. Especially all the positive buzz the film has been getting.

Thursday night can't get here fast enough!

Well, first you have to understand the basis of what you're trying to claim is a fact. But again, this education one is a complex idea, so I understand how it's hard to comprehend.

Anywho, MJ stuff all. Honestly though, can anyone confirm the above question I asked?

I've heard from multiple sources that she's called Michelle once.
Right before she says her MJ line.

Peter's school is not called a high school in this film.

but over the course of the series, it will undergo an evolution and story arc where it will become the Peter Parker's high school we all know and love.

:o

it's what i heard as well.
she becomes the captain of the decathlon team and a teacher or something announces her as michelle, and she tells the kids her friends call her MJ.

High school and specialized school are not mutually exclusive. Peter's school specializes in Science and technology, but they still study other subjects as well. Evidently Spanish for example.

Edit: To stay on topic, I have noticed that I am in minority here in that I hope that Michelle wont evolve more towards Mary Jane in the sequels. Right now I welcome her as a new character who is probably going to play classic MJ's role as the romantic end game. But if she starts to resemble Mary Jane more in looks, personality and story, I will have to consider her an adaptation and then I'll have to go through the emotions that you have been going through the past week or so, lol.

I have seen many posters here compare the film to SSM. If this film is taking influence from that show, I very much hope they build the MJ/Peter friendship as SSM was.

I woulhid be fine with that, if they don't decided to call her MJ. But if they do, it's clearly already an adaptation.

See, if this is true, it's just kind of annoying. Why even give her the Michelle name?

On a serious note, arguing with a troll is like playing chess with a pigeon. "it knocks the pieces over, craps on the board, and flies back to its flock to claim victory." You can never win, but the more you engage with them, the more you lose.

Get back to the topic, I'm on my way to see this in a few hours. I'm kinda bummed that Zendaya is apparently not much in the movie (that's no longer a spoiler right?) since she is such a big star among those under 30 and had chemistry test with Tom and was cast so early. Any way I hope she gets more screen time in future movie, not even necessarily in the role of a love interest because I find man/ woman friendship really refreshing (we caught glimpse of it in TWS but it was brief).

Back on topic, how would people want them to handle the MJ transformation?

Since the thread seemed to get hijacked right after my post, I'll re-post it as it relates to your question:

Are you meaning the physical change? As in she becomes the bombshell beauty.

More the physical change as it relates to her mental reasoning for it. The "I'm the best friend but now I'm hot and all of a sudden he likes me romantically" cliche is a bit tired, and sends some negative messages to the female audience members. Also, it doesn't fit with MJ as a character. She was a model because she wanted to be. She wasn't doing it for anyone else. Certably not to catch the eye of Peter.

That's what I'm worried about with this situation. If they do make her more MJ in appearance, I don't want the change to be motivated by a romantic yearning for Peter.

I like the idea that it's more coming out of your shell, rather than "I'm trying to look the way I think my love interest wants." And I don't mind the Jane idea. Though I'm sure they would have thought it was too easy to see coming.

But then, "Michelle" was about as good a cover as the whole Kahn situation in the 2nd new Trek.

I see.

Well, I've had this theory for awhile regarding that type of transformation. It goes back to a process that Weisman and Cook utilized for TSSM show. They gave us versions of Gwen and Harry that were high school aged and basically they took the college aged Gwen and Harry from the comics and then extrapolated backwards based on the info they had as to what the characters would have been like during their high school years.

Using that same concept, what if Feige does the same with this Michelle character. We're meeting her in high school and this is what MJ was like during that time period--as a teenager. Then she makes that transformation into the fun party girl persona, changes her appearance, etc all to cover up her pain, loneliness, what have you but it's not about trying to be the romantic partner for Peter or get his attention. At least not initially. This way you're still keeping in line with the character and there's even a way to possibly work in the 'you hit the jackpot' line at some point when they do eventually hook up.

That's kinda what I'm hoping for at this point.

At this point, it would be the best option.

Spectacular already extrapolated what 616 college age MJ would be like in HS. and that was Spectacular MJ.......lol.

I would be happy with that. As long as it's a personal decision for her own reasons and not for Peter's benefit.

I respectfully disagree.

Although MJ in TSSM was high school aged vs the college aged version we meet in issue #42, she already had the visual bombshell appearance, the playful sass, the party girl persona, the desire to pursue acting, etc. TSSM's MJ was very much an intact representation of 616.

Yes, my thoughts exactly.

You can tell she kinda ribs Peter not because she's a ***** but she does kind of like him in a way. Just her blunt honesty is what a real friend would do instead of telling you what you wanna hear.

this. and also if they go for the makeover thing i hope it won't also be because of some weird "only girls that wear makeup and are traditionally girly are pretty and can get the guy" idea or something like that. that wouldn't be a good message either.

well that was my point.

Spectacular was the hs version of 616 MJ.
