Homecoming The Zendaya is possibly someone, maybe thread - Part 4

What's in the credits as her name?

"Michelle"

All characters have only the name, I guess that's because of the same reason they refer to Liz as just 'Liz' and never mentioned "Allen".

What annoys me the most is that the character was completely irrelevant to the story. Seriously, she's barely in the movie and her few scenes are for comic relief. If her character was removed, the movie would still have worked the same. [BLACKOUT]The MJ nickname was [/BLACKOUT]completely unnecessary and forced.

1000% agree. I'm praying they just
nicknamed her MJ
so that Mary Jane can come along and have some kind of rivalry or comedic back and forth.

Ms irrelevant for sure but we all figured she was more than just Michelle.

Well with the many things they changed with the traditional Spider-Man story, I wouldn't be surprised that she is MJ. She said people call her MJ but I will still wait and see.

They wouldn't have
named her MJ if she wasn't her. It was stupid that they had to hide it.

[blackout]They should have just called her Mary Jane from the get-go if the character wanted to be called MJ.[/blackout]

Zendaya was funny in this movie ... But not necessary whatsoever. The only thing about this movie that I flat-out disliked is how this movie essentially just turned an original character into "Not Mary Jane." It's lame, stupid, and a copout.

You know not every character needs to be crucial to the story in order to be relevant, yeah? I mean, even without knowing about the actress having a bigger role in the sequel, we know (or should know) that sometimes, a movie serves as an introduction to some characters, setting them up for more meaningful roles in the future. Honestly, I'm baffled by people who still think that reveal is tacked on just because... lol. They obviously have bigger plans for the character.

But she's not MJ...MJ means Mary Jane...

MJ means whatever Feige and Watts wants it to mean. This is the MCU, not Marvel comics.

She is probably a hybrid of Mary Jane and an original character. I think that they wanted to do this fresh and interesting, weird and wise original character and capitalize on MJ's iconic status. Perhaps Feige (mistakenly) thought that it'd be cute and appropriate if Peter always had an MJ regardless of the universe. Maybe later we find out that she has more similarities to Mary Jane.

I still think that naming the character Michelle is smart and honest move from Marvel. It's like they are admitting that they haven't really made a faithful adaptation of MJ and are running with it.

Looks like the only thing that can be done now is to wait and see what they do with her in the sequel.

She was far from unnecessary to the irreverent John Hughes feel of film they were going for and I enjoyed every scene she was in

tdkr did something similar with robin

I can understand why many people aren't happy
that she is MJ. Many have wanted a comic accurate version of MJ for a long time. They didn't really get the personality right in Raimi movies so many people wanted them to do it right this time. I was hoping to get comic accurate Ultimate MJ.

Yo, Zendaya was AWESOME in this. Her comedy strengths really shone through and her not having 'the alleged transformation' really strenthened her character in a way I loved. I totally believed she was a messed up kid.

I think the MJ bit worked, because of the "I don't have any friends" arc they put on her. I think, if anything, that line that set up the arc was forced, because who comes out and just says that. I still think this is a great more realistic way to have the "Face it Tiger, you just hit the jackpot" line in today's dating world. Also the bit where the Tigers are the team, and the mascot suit is a thing, that really has to happen.

I get the desire for more faithful interpretations, but I can't deny the quality of what we got, and how the remixes of it, including not having teenagers named Mary Jane in 2017 makes so much sense.

Name the character Michelle and don't call her MJ and I'd agree with you. But by calling her MJ, they went from a fresh interesting character to needlessly changing the name of one of Spidey's best love interests. And changing her personality. It's rather pointles.

This was as bad as 'Robin John Blake' in my book.

I actually thought the Robin thing was fine, because John Blake wasn't a robin. He wasn't supposed to be Tim Drake or Dick Grayson. He was just someone who took up the mantle, and Nolan threw in the name as an acknowledgement of the history of the Robin character. But he was never based on an existing Robin.

That isn't the case here. Michelle is apparently going to be based off MJ. And the name change is just pointless. I liked her character, but I would have been fine had they kept her totally original, or just have her name reveal be Mary! Even though she's not the MJ personality yet, I can see a route where she evolves into that.

Oh yeah, context is different, but I'm never a fan of these lame 'a-ha!' reveals in movies like this. It was beneath Nolan certainly, and it felt dumb in this movie too.

I'm not either, though I didn't mind Nolan's as it was just an homage to part of comic history, as opposed to changing the name of a well established character.

to be fair, tigers were always the mascots so it's not the movie purposefully alluding to her.

also out of all the arguments pro-name change, the one i don't get is that no one would be named mary jane nowadays. what 15 year old is called eugene or whatever? it's just a name, and it's not like mary itself is unusual, so they could've gone the ultimates route with that.

Not no one, but it's quite a bit rarer than Eugene , I think. There's also the drug reference bit.

The biggest argument pro name change is this: Michelle is awesome, and her going by MJ makes her more awesome, both as a comics reference and as a developed character. So strong is this argument, I don't even consider it an argument. It's just what it is.

Imo, of course.

opinions aren't facts, dude. people are allowed to have differing opinions and there's no right or wrong here. art is subjective etc.

I've already thought about the character uttering *that* line. I can easily imagine her saying it and I haven't watched the movie yet. :funny: I've said it before and I'll say it again, "Michelle" is already giving me more comic Mary Jane vibes than KD's MJ ever did. I still remember how unmoved I was by her Tiger line at the end of SM2. It just didn't sound right coming from her. Seriously. lol

..... i'm sorry.. but the "drug reference" is the most absurd excuse.. the term has been around since like the 60s.. and was never a problem before. Especially when the main character is named PETER slang for male genitalia...

that's not a valid excuse for why they may not have named anyone mary jane....
