Thor: Ragnarok The Official News and Speculation Thread - - - - Part 13

Just got back from seeing it. Didn't take itself seriously at all. Utterly ridiculous in all the right ways.

I dreamed of a service like MoviePass for a very long time just because of blockbusters like Ragnarok. I've had mine for a couple of months now and love it. I've had no problems whatsoever watching any movie I want.

Can you use it on IMAX? Or IMAX 3D? How do you now the participating movie theaters? I went to their website and didn't see it there.

I’’ve got something like that with my health insurance where I get a cinema ticket every week if I’’m active enough the week before. It’‘s free for regular tickets with a small premium for the best screens. It only works with 2 chains though but my main local cinema is one of those so it’s cool. No IMAX though but I don’t mind paying separately for that. This is very useful if you want to rewatch something a bunch of times.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed this... not sure if it's an editing goof or a reshoot...

When Hela is sitting on the throne and Skurge comes in telling her about the missing sword and she's looking good (Picture below). It then cuts to them going back to the Gate/bridge to look and she's back to looking very disheveled.

I did notice her having make up and looking model like in one scene. I was thinking how it was possible or why she would bother to do her self up. Maybe it was a mood thing for the character.

Cate fits in so well she needs to meet the rest of the MCU family.

Not sure about IMAX or 3D since I'm not a fan of either. I've gone to strictly 2D digital presentations. They had a search on their website that listed all of my local AMC and Cinemark theaters when I first checked them out but that search doesn't seem to be working at the moment. Not sure if it's a glitch since that's the first time I visited their site since signing up.

Fun fact: The chick that played Topaz also voiced Grandma in Moana.

Thor 4 : Thor and his family team up to go on a new wacky adventure. Hulk will join them and they will be a fantastic four of a group......

Waititi reveals a John Hughes-style flashback that was cut (Mild Spoilers):

"Well I wanted this little thing, and maybe if we ever do a Thor 4 we can have it, but I wanted to do some flashbacks where Thor was a kid, a fat little kid. There was like an 80s version of Asgard where everyone had massive shoulder pads, and everyone had mullets (laughs). Our idea was Thor and Valkyrie meet and he’s like, ‘Hey I know you,’ and she’s like ‘Ha I remember you,’ and then it cuts back to this thing and he’s just this pudgy little kid walking around with a mullet and being picked on by other kids. And Loki’s like this little emo goth hanging out by himself. He was like the kid in Harry Potter [Malfoy]".

As for why it was cut:

“The problem was we needed him to not know Valkyire in the film and stuff. And then it became less and less of a thing to have a flashback. We would’ve been forcing it, so it would’ve been a situation where we would have been having a pointless flashback.”

I just got back from seeing Ragnarok. Very entertaining movie and certainly the best of the Thor films. I think it's a bit overrated though.

How is it overrated, there are plenty of people who dislike it.

This third chapter focusing on The God of Thunder Thor is definitely the best and wittiest of the 3.
This time around he takes on Hela the Goddess of Death and has an incredible adventure on the planet Sakaar, where he runs into an old friend from work.

The entire cast does wonderful work here:Chris Hemsworth,Tom Hiddleston,Cate Blanchett,Idris Elba
Jeff Goldblum,Tessa Thompson,Karl Urban,Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins
Especially new comers Thompson and Blanchett.
I went in with the fear of the movie being overly tongue in cheek, but the humorous moments never become obnoxious in my opinion.

The 80's sci fi vibe coupled with synth music works in the film. There's also a connecting vibe in these MCU films that makes me feel im meeting up with old friends i havent seen in a few months.
Visually some of the scenes are stunning to look at like a painting coming to life.
I wished for some colorful side characters, and i definitely got that in a standout character named Korg
portrayed by Director Taika Waititi
The chemistry between Thor,Valkyrie and Hulk/Bruce is off the charts in several stand out scenes.
There are several great cameos i wont give away, some pop culture references and good dramatic turns.

Some of the action sequences were a bit choppy, there's a been there done that feel here and there and there were some seemingly epic moments on the horizon but i was dissapointed that they were very brief.

In the end Thor: Ragnarok is like the light and colorful handful of episodes in a TV series right before the mid season or season finale darkness prevails. But boy did i have fun.

Scale of 1-10 an 8

Well I saw the movie this weekend and I have to say I had a really great time. Overall I enjoyed the film a lot. However, I'm more than a little torn. What I watched was a mix of the most amazing things I've ever seen in a comic book movie together with things that I'm still trying to decide whether I'm OK with.

They changed Thor's personality - quite a bit here - and frankly it was jarring to me. I need to watch the movie again with fresh eyes and without my previous expectations in order to get a better grasp on this change. Yes he's more charismatic and yes Hemsworth is more natural in the role and does it justice but I also liked Thor the way he was. I know Thor can be dull at times but to me he is lovably dull and Hemsworth has always embodied him perfectly to me. Now I can accept that people change but this change was one we never saw coming. I don't think Marvel saw it coming either (this was all Taika) - and had they - then they could have done a better job laying the groundwork for Thor to become who he was in this film. His use of Earthlike vernacular would have made sense had we seen it creep into his language at various points earlier in other films - or heck even this film. Instead he ventures off to space and starts the movie quipping away when at the end of Age of Ultron he was still using his signature stilted speech. Later on, hearing Thor say things like "Are we cool?" just wasn't Thor to me.

I also wasn't satisfied with the closure of his story arc with Jane Foster. I don't care if other people hate her. I liked her and that plot line deserved a better resolution.

It was also very upsetting to me to see certain beloved characters so expediently dispatched with such little fanfare (in a way that made me hearken back to how I felt when I watched something similar unfold in Transformers the Movie as a kid). I don't want to give anything away but I needed to see Thor grieve over that and I didn't. There was also an important character missing whose absence really stood out to me.

The humor didn't really bother me - I like humor - but there were times I almost felt it was turning needlessly into self parody. Combined with Thor's personality changes it was another area where I had to adjust my expectations. This is the director's film for sure. If anything I hope this puts to rest the stupid complaint that Marvel doesn't give their directors enough creative freedom. I predict however that is what will make this film very divisive like Iron Man 3 (another example of a director given free reign by Marvel).

I have to say I do find it a little hypocritical that people would fault The Dark World for its use of humor but embrace and extol this one which serves a double plus helping of it. Humor is of course subjective. What I find funny, you may not - and vice versa. But this was a much better directed film and far more exciting with better characters so it's easier to overlook I suppose.

Having said all that I want to hit on the things I LOVED:

  • Thor vs. Surtur - AMAZING - this is the Thor I've wanted to see all along and it's really the most powerful use of his hammer we've seen since he battled in Jotunheim - I freaking loved this battle!!
  • Flying - Yes, yes and YES! Another long overdue visual - such a shame that these things almost immediately precede their ultimate demise
  • The confrontation with Loki in Asgard and just in general Thor besting Loki several times in this film - this was a good arc for me - well played across all the films - because since the first film we've steadily seen character growth from Thor in how he slowly wises up to Loki and all his antics. This film builds on Thor's display of savvy from TDW and upped it quite a bit.
  • Thor getting to be the main character in his own film. Thank you Taika- you kept your promise here.
  • Thor vs. Hulk gladitorial contest - hands down the best thing I've ever seen in the MCU. I haven't wanted to jump from my chair in the movie theater like this since the last time Thor and Hulk fought on the helicarrier in the Avengers
  • The Donald Blake easter eggs
  • The return of the emotion between Thor and Odin that we saw in Branagh's first film - I was moved by their interactions especially by the end
  • Thor and Loki's chemistry - truly a highlight of all 3 films and here was probably the best we've ever seen it
  • Thor and Hulk's chemisty - best bromance in the MCU!
  • Point Break - hysterical
  • Loki vs Valkyrie
  • More Heimdall
  • Goldblum as Grandmaster - though the orgies reference was a bit much for me personally
  • Blanchett as Hela - she was wicked and beautiful and nasty and a force to be reckoned with
  • Hulk vs Fenris
  • Skurge's last stand - not quite Simonson's version but I found it moving nonetheless
  • Thor's finale - Not saying anything because I don't want to spoil it but man that was great
  • Inclusion of both Doyle and Tyler's themes for Thor - especially at the end
  • Astonishing visuals - might very well be Marvel's best looking film
Other random thoughts. This may be sacrilege but I'm not a huge Korg fan. He was all right I guess. I might warm up to him. I also experienced some cognitive dissonance listening to that voice coming from such an intimidating rocky form. I guess that was the point. Then part of me was wondering - was this a jab at Fantfourstick?

The hair. I'm OK with it being cut for this film but I love Thor's locks. He's a viking god. Grow the hair back please.

It was amazing to see Thor's true power but I really hope we see Mjolnir again. I'm in mourning over Mjolnir just as much as Thor. Thor without his hammer just feels odd to me.

I have more thoughts on this but I'm really trying to keep this spoiler free... guess I should hit the other thread for that.
