Well I saw the movie this weekend and I have to say I had a really great time. Overall I enjoyed the film a lot. However, I'm more than a little torn. What I watched was a mix of the most amazing things I've ever seen in a comic book movie together with things that I'm still trying to decide whether I'm OK with.
They changed Thor's personality - quite a bit here - and frankly it was jarring to me. I need to watch the movie again with fresh eyes and without my previous expectations in order to get a better grasp on this change. Yes he's more charismatic and yes Hemsworth is more natural in the role and does it justice but I also liked Thor the way he was. I know Thor can be dull at times but to me he is lovably dull and Hemsworth has always embodied him perfectly to me. Now I can accept that people change but this change was one we never saw coming. I don't think Marvel saw it coming either (this was all Taika) - and had they - then they could have done a better job laying the groundwork for Thor to become who he was in this film. His use of Earthlike vernacular would have made sense had we seen it creep into his language at various points earlier in other films - or heck even this film. Instead he ventures off to space and starts the movie quipping away when at the end of Age of Ultron he was still using his signature stilted speech. Later on, hearing Thor say things like "Are we cool?" just wasn't Thor to me.
I also wasn't satisfied with the closure of his story arc with Jane Foster. I don't care if other people hate her. I liked her and that plot line deserved a better resolution.
It was also very upsetting to me to see certain beloved characters so expediently dispatched with such little fanfare (in a way that made me hearken back to how I felt when I watched something similar unfold in Transformers the Movie as a kid). I don't want to give anything away but I needed to see Thor grieve over that and I didn't. There was also an important character missing whose absence really stood out to me.
The humor didn't really bother me - I like humor - but there were times I almost felt it was turning needlessly into self parody. Combined with Thor's personality changes it was another area where I had to adjust my expectations. This is the director's film for sure. If anything I hope this puts to rest the stupid complaint that Marvel doesn't give their directors enough creative freedom. I predict however that is what will make this film very divisive like Iron Man 3 (another example of a director given free reign by Marvel).
I have to say I do find it a little hypocritical that people would fault The Dark World for its use of humor but embrace and extol this one which serves a double plus helping of it. Humor is of course subjective. What I find funny, you may not - and vice versa. But this was a much better directed film and far more exciting with better characters so it's easier to overlook I suppose.
Having said all that I want to hit on the things I LOVED:
- Thor vs. Surtur - AMAZING - this is the Thor I've wanted to see all along and it's really the most powerful use of his hammer we've seen since he battled in Jotunheim - I freaking loved this battle!!
- Flying - Yes, yes and YES! Another long overdue visual - such a shame that these things almost immediately precede their ultimate demise
- The confrontation with Loki in Asgard and just in general Thor besting Loki several times in this film - this was a good arc for me - well played across all the films - because since the first film we've steadily seen character growth from Thor in how he slowly wises up to Loki and all his antics. This film builds on Thor's display of savvy from TDW and upped it quite a bit.
- Thor getting to be the main character in his own film. Thank you Taika- you kept your promise here.
- Thor vs. Hulk gladitorial contest - hands down the best thing I've ever seen in the MCU. I haven't wanted to jump from my chair in the movie theater like this since the last time Thor and Hulk fought on the helicarrier in the Avengers
- The Donald Blake easter eggs
- The return of the emotion between Thor and Odin that we saw in Branagh's first film - I was moved by their interactions especially by the end
- Thor and Loki's chemistry - truly a highlight of all 3 films and here was probably the best we've ever seen it
- Thor and Hulk's chemisty - best bromance in the MCU!
- Point Break - hysterical
- Loki vs Valkyrie
- More Heimdall
- Goldblum as Grandmaster - though the orgies reference was a bit much for me personally
- Blanchett as Hela - she was wicked and beautiful and nasty and a force to be reckoned with
- Hulk vs Fenris
- Skurge's last stand - not quite Simonson's version but I found it moving nonetheless
- Thor's finale - Not saying anything because I don't want to spoil it but man that was great
- Inclusion of both Doyle and Tyler's themes for Thor - especially at the end
- Astonishing visuals - might very well be Marvel's best looking film
Other random thoughts. This may be sacrilege but I'm not a huge Korg fan. He was all right I guess. I might warm up to him. I also experienced some cognitive dissonance listening to that voice coming from such an intimidating rocky form. I guess that was the point. Then part of me was wondering - was this a jab at Fantfourstick?
The hair. I'm OK with it being cut for this film but I love Thor's locks. He's a viking god. Grow the hair back please.
It was amazing to see Thor's true power but I really hope we see Mjolnir again. I'm in mourning over Mjolnir just as much as Thor. Thor without his hammer just feels odd to me.
I have more thoughts on this but I'm really trying to keep this spoiler free... guess I should hit the other thread for that.
