Thor: Ragnarok The Official News and Speculation Thread - Part 2

What? Controversial twists and more unenthusiastic acting from Natalie Portman is exactly what this franchise needs right now.

Semi OT but Jane Foster as Thor could have been a great mini arc in Aaron's overall story imo. When she first got the hammer it was a surprisingly interesting take where he told you more about who Thor (Odinson) is at the same time as someone new was holding the hammer as she got a bit of a dual personality when she tried to grasp what was happening. It should just have been a short arc to do just that and then gotten back to the real Thor.

Now it feels like Aaron's long term Ragnarok story got neutered and I stopped reading when Secret Wars began. Maybe I'm missing out on something since I don't even know if there was a reboot of stories after Secret Wars, but I had so much hype for what Aaron was doing with Thor: God of Thunder that my disappointment when Marvel took things in a different direction just couldn't let me enjoy it.

According to the traditions of the Eldar, Artanis was Galadriel's 'father name' at birth, it means 'Noble Woman' in Quenya. Her 'mother name' (which was given later) was Nerwen which means 'Man Maiden' in Quenya because she was unusually tall and strong for a Noldorin woman. The name Galadriel is indeed the Sindarin version of 'Alatáriel' (Telerin Quenya) and was an epessë ('after name') that was given to her by her husband Celeborn. It means 'Maiden Crowned with Radiance', which is why she's often referred to as the Lady of Light, it's a literal translation of her name.

Like I said before, I know way too much random stuff about Elves. :funny: I just love Tolkien's world so much.

Anyway, back to Thor: Ragnarok. I read an interesting theory on TV Tropes today that I hadn't thought of. Remember Contest of Champions wherein the Grandmaster made a wager with Death for the life of the Collector and they pitted superheroes against each other? What if Ragnarok will contain a very very loose adaption of that, but with Hela in Death's place and Odin in the Collector's?

Say Hela has an agreement with Loki and she has Odin trapped in Hel while Loki rules Asgard. Thor, upon his return to Asgard soon sees through Loki's deception (maybe with Valkyrie's help) and demands that Hela release Odin. She says fine, but only if you fight for me in this big intergalactic contest thing and win. Thor, having no other choice agrees and gets cast out to the gladitorial planet where he finds out his opponent (fighting for Grandmaster) is Hulk, bringing in the Planet Hulk element.

Thor and Hulk ultimately manage to escape somehow and travel the cosmos trying to find a weapon with which to beat Hela and retrieve Odin. Hela, meanwhile is so pissed at Thor defying her that she declares war against the Nine Realms and plans to unleash Surtur to bring about Ragnarok, forcing Loki to chose whether he will side with Asgard or with Hela. It would certainly be an interesting dilemma for Loki.

It explains how the Grandmaster is involved and would be a good introduction for the character to later appear alongside the Collector and maybe other Elders of the Universe in the Infinity War films.

This would be the most excellent
I think it would be awesome after or during the Hulk vs Thor battle
That Thor makes a speech to all competitors and prisoners that they can have a new life if they help him defend Asgard
Can you imagine
Beta ray Bill Champion The Gladiator etc all showed up at Asgard for an epic battle againsy Surtur

A chance to see Thor do this?

I'm down.

Hmmm, I'm not so sure we will see Hulk battle Thor. I like the idea of the wager for Odin's release; but, this suppose to be somewhat of a "buddy" film. So I think the event described is possibly what occurs, with one caveat...Thor is given one choice to pick someone to aid him in battle; so, he chooses Hulk. This how Hulk is for what appear to us, to be no apparent reason, is suddenly removed from Earth and is transported to Battleworld....by the Grandmaster. Thus, the buddy galactic roadtrip begins...

I could see that too, not a bad idea
it'll disappoint those who want a no holds barred fight between the two, but could potentially make more story sense; I mean how much of a coincidence would it be that Hulk is already there battling when Thor gets sent there..?

They've already fought once and don't have a beef with each other, more of a locker room buddy brawl mindset. If they're forced to fight I could see it.

there's no way hulk and thor arn't going to trade blows in this film.. that much is obvious

How is that obvious?

1) Grandmaster is playing the "red king" kinda role in this film... he's known for pitting people against each other in battle

2) Planet Hulk armor is all but confirmed

3) there's been lots of rumors about Thor vs Hulk being forced to fight

4) Everyone loves a hero vs hero fight.. we got it between thor/cap/ironman in avengers... we got it in civil war out the wazoo, hulk vs Tony in Avengers 2... it's pretty believable to see Hulk Vs Thor in Thor 3...

I really don't think its going to be Thor forming a team to fight Grandmasters team. it's not going to be "thor civil war"

Is it fair to assume that this will be a mash-up of Contest of Champions and Planet Hulk?

I think that's a jump fans are making. I mean, was Del Toro as the Collector involved in an adaptation of some classic story from the comics featuring that character?

I think that's how we'll get the "Smart" Hulk reveal. The two will be battling furiously in the arena and Hulk will grab Thor and tell him "Stay down. I've got a plan to get us out of here" when they're in a clinch.

wasn't nuts about Warcraft but the orc portrayal proved a talkative Hulk can work.

I actually think the Hulk will be brainlessly battling, and when Thor is forced to fight against the "champion" of the arena (Thor will become a gladiator against his will I think, if it's true he's got a "shaved" head at the outset), then Thor will try to get Hulk to recognize his Avengers' teammate and change back into Banner (and perhaps succeed and win because he knows something about his opponent that no one else there does).

Being forced to fight mindlessly for the entertainment of others could be a good motivation for Banner to try and resolve the inner conflict with the Hulk. Thor wants to get a weapon to stop Ragnarok, and if that's the soul stone, I can see them suggesting its power may cure the Banner/Hulk duality as well. Thus, cosmic buddy road trip ensues!

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is out this weekend in the US, for those interested.

I really hope we get filming pics soon even if it is just the cast walking to and from set in costume.

I think that's kind of a shallow comparison. The Orcs are immediately established as a civilization with intelligence in the movie.

To this point Hulk has not been, in an attempt to show a contrast between he and Bruce. For the most part he's been a weapon that at best could be directed at an enemy.

I'm saying it wouldn't look weird, which is apparently the reason they have yet to do it in live action according to directors.

It would be a gamble. I think part of it isn't the silliness, but the fact that the Hulk's biggest cultural footprint comes from the old 70's show, where he was a mindless beast that couldn't talk. That colored a lot of people's perceptions, I think.

Here's the caption Hemsworth put when he posted that to Instagram (for those wondering):

chrishemsworth: Just had a very constructive story meeting with our Thor 3 director @taikawaititi - gonna be a lotta fun.
If you haven't seen his other film yet @huntforthewilderpeople, go see it! It's got more heart, humor and fun than a bag of marshmallows. It opens tomorrow in LA/NYC and everywhere in July. Visit wilderpeople.film to buy tickets !!

Love the pic, Taika always makes me laugh. :woot: I really hope that we get a photo of all the cast together once filming starts, like the pic of the cast from the set of Guardians 2.

It looks like a majority of the film will be shot on sound stages but there are some external sets, a couple of sites have posted pics of the set construction:

Construction is well and truly underway on the Gold Coast set of Thor: Ragnarok
It’s a Marvel in the making as Thor: Ragnarok’s ‘majestical’ universe rises on Gold Coast

Production crew members have been going hammer and tongs for the past few months to get the film’s epic array of props, costumes and sets, said to include several spaceships, ready for July 4.

:chd:
