Thor: Ragnarok The Official News and Speculation Thread - Part 2

(Vulture) - [Wilderpeople] really doesn't look like an indie — it's got this grand visual conceit to it. Now you're making the jump to a big, expensive studio movie. As you're preparing to do that, what do you see as the differences between working on something like Hunt for the Wilderpeople and working on something like Thor, in terms of imagining the world and language?

(Waititi) -I don't feel like I have to be too loyal to the visual language of the first two Thor movies, because they're quite different from each other.

-And from very different directors, too.

-Yeah, and I'm a pretty different director from both of those guys. To make it work for me, I have to understand that I'm not making an episode of something. I'm making a film. But I've been lucky enough to work with really, really talented people — designers, cinematographers, and people who bring something extremely special and amazing to this job — and it makes me relax. So whenever I make films, I'm very, very relaxed. Unless things are going terribly, and I freak out.

-That's a good quality to have, especially on a big, expensive project. There are rumors that Thor: Ragnarok will be a buddy movie, which is interesting considering that Hunt for the Wilderpeople is also a buddy movie. Is that true?

-Yeah, there were a lot of ideas in place before I even showed up. There were a lot before I'd even finished Hunt for the Wilderpeople — I mean, with that one, I was just making a buddy comedy. But I wouldn't say this is really a buddy film, you know. There are elements of that in there, but the film is so different from anything else that I'd ever seen. I can't really say too much about it, but it's going to be an amazing film.

-The obligations that come with a Marvel movie can be stifling, since it has to fit the universe and the tone. Going into Thor, has that been something you've noticed? Or do you think that you've had the opportunity to just make it what you wanted it to be?

-Well, no, it has to fit within the universe. Also, there's a good reason why I'm not a part of the studio — I don't have a brain for that, to see outside of this one film I'm making. All those guys know exactly what's going on with all the other films and how they relate, which is good, because I'm somebody who can mess that up a bit. I might suggest something and they'll say, "Oh no, you can't do that, because it's already been done," and I'll say, "Oh cool, great, forget it." You need that. You need someone to oversee all that stuff.

Space ships, eh?

Surprised at seeing some practical sets for Asgard. I'd always assumed everything was green screened.

I think Studios and Directors are finally starting to come around to the fact that: Practical + CGI > CGI alone
And we might have Mad Max and Star Wars (oddly enough) to thank for it

theres been plenty of films before that...

imo Jurassic Park will always be the birth of combining the 2 in the best way possible... but so many chose to ignore that mix of practical and CGI together that it seemed forgotten about. thus far Marvel has pretty much always mixed the 2... which is how they do the ironman armor in the first place

yeah but for a while there a lot of films (not the Marvel ones specifically) were using a ton of CGI. Jurassic Park did it the right way, but then everybody was like, "look at the crazy s*** we can make on a computer" and forgot to include practical stuff; the SW prequels being some of the worst offenders.

But Mad Max and Force Awakens both got a lot of coverage for doing as much as possible in a practical way, then they both became huge hits, and now I think more directors are looking to apply CG SFX in more tasteful ways than they were used in the 2000's

but yeah, Marvel does it well... between Iron Man (Specifically in the first film, CW looked a little too computer-y) and Red Skull and Black Panther and several others, they usually strike a nice balance. CW, for as great as it was, may be one of the bigger offenders in Marvel's stable, as IM looked wonky, and Spider-man looked like rubber pretty much the whole time

The cast should be flying out to Australia soon. Considering filming starts on the 4th July, they'll need time to get over any jetlag caused by the long flight.

Waititi's new film looks like an interesting comedy/drama. I think I will check it out in theaters.

Pretty sure they dropped the practical suit bits in Avenger, IM3 and CW and the suits were 100% CGI(unles I'm wrong and we have set pics of RDJ or his stunt guy in a partial suit)

Some effects work better in practical, some in CGI. In general CGI has come so far that you can do most things with it very well (it comes down to the individual performance) but one thing it definitely does less well than practical stuff is to give the actors something to act against. Hence why Ian McKellen broke down while playing one of the Hobbit films, where he had nothing but green screen and tennis balls to act against.

In general effects have long been more than good enough to make me suspend disbelief. I've always said that the experience is half the movie, half the viewer. If the viewer doesn't do his best to get immersed he's a bad viewer, just as a movie can be bad. The best experiences are a combined effort.

They built Asgard sets for both Thor films especially TDW.

Really hoping we start getting some leaked on-set pics floating around within the next month. I don't think I can wait for another year or more before official character posters and such start being released to see Cate Blanchett in costume as Hela.

I know he's the director and he has to say positive things, but that sentence honestly makes me really damn excited.

Taika has already done something better than the Avengers movies did... Bruce Banner's look! I've always thought that short hair would look better for Bruce and it does!I really love his hairstyle for this movie!:woot:

Ruffalo seems like such a nice dude
Kinda surprises me he chose acting and not just running a charity or something, lol

I dunno, Ruffalo's do in Age of Ultron kinda reminded me of Bill Bixby - and thats a good thing.

Is Banner gonna have his stubble again? I liked it in Iron Man 3.

and will the hulk also have stubble? or will it magically disappoint when he transforms?

like in The Trial of the Incredible Hulk...

lol

Ruffalo could have just remained an "Indy guy" but he loves playing Banner/Hulk and I believe that playing the big green guy has given him more opportunities.

If he ever wins an Oscar, he better not bring it to the set of the next two Avengers movies, because RDJ would try to steal it (as a prank of course).

Like how General Ross' mustache magically disappears whenever he turns into the Red Hulk?

And it begins!

Really excited for this. I ignored most of the GOTG2 stuff to try to go in relatively blind, but I'm back to excessively following this and Spidey

Please God don't let this film suck.

We have a great cast and crew and I need this film to really nail it. There's so much material to draw from (comics, Norse mythology) and after watching all aired seasons of vikings twice I really want this film to blow my socks off. Thor needs and deserves it and getting rid if Darcy et al was a thunderous step in the right direction.

Wow, I just found out that Dan Hennah is the production designer! :chd: For those who don't know, Dan Hennah was the production designer for all of the Lord of the Rings movies and The Hobbit movies, he won an Oscar for LoTR: Return of the King. That's honestly really exciting, if nothing else we now know that this film is certainly going to look spectacular.

Everything I read about this film makes me more excited, I'm currently anxiously awaiting some more cast selfies, and maybe just maybe some leaked on set pics... Please?
