Time to Discuss Race: The White Washing of The Shredder

well I agree with that.. all I'm saying is you shouldn't be declaring racism without a shred of proof... it's a theory nothing more... if it was a black man changed to a white man you can believe the fallout would be 10 times worse... but yeah no need for name calling.. I'm gonna drop this now cos theres no getting through to him

I don't really get the idea behind the change unless it's the reincarnation idea. I mean The Shredder just being Eric Sachs the businessman is a bad idea IMO. I think they could have made Oroku Saki work.

White-washing has been a regular thing in Hollywood. And it still continues, Thank you Michael Bay.

I think an even bigger deal than making Shredder white was making hum an alien Utrom in the 4Kids series (2003). I say let's just wait and see guys.

I concur

Did we also forget that Raph had at one time became Shredder for a brief time?

At least he was still Oroku Saki, and he was one of the best versions of the character, until the unfortunate reveal. It would have been better had they made him a cursed immortal from feudal Japan. The whole Utrom deal was really disappointing.

Many people have been "Shredder"

"Shredder" is just the leader of the Foot. Doesn't matter who that leader is. I prefer Oroku Saki of course, but I'm more then willing to give anyone they want to have running them a chance to see what they are doing with the story.

To me, Oroku Saki will ALWAYS be The Shredder. Yes, Karai took it over, but it's like Darth Vader... there is only one Darth Vader. Anyone else who took up the mask or armor would just be an imitator aka Eric Sachs.

Cursed immortal???? Isn't that kind of what IDW is doing with the Saki character?

Just seen the better look at the shredder design on the front page, I'm trying to stay positive but that design is just far to busy and over complex seriously it looks like a transformer ****ed a blender.

A little too busy yeah but overall I like the design

I think Shredder looks awesome. Little more visually busy then the others, but still Shredder. Works for me.

I think that's a perfectly apt description. It would be fine if he wasn't basically walking around with a goddamn tool shed on his forearms.

Funniest thing I've read tonight.

Is this what he is looking like in the film? I just thought it was concept art. Either way, it will certainly be busy. He's not really supposed to be armored, just have the helmet, the blades on his arms, the shoulder pads and shin guards, right!

It's just like batman... yes it will always be Bruce Wayne... but anyone can wear the armor and "be" Batman when needed.

As for Eric Sachs.. I'm hoping they are going the reincarnation route rather then just whitewashing. Like the comics have.

Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw.

It's still whitewashing regardless of reincarnation. I mean Oroku Saki's spirit happens to go on a mystical journey and ends up inhabiting the body of a man who strangely shares a name almost identical to his only Anglicized? Come on... ****ing stupid.

And while your point about Batman is valid, Karai has been the Shredder too, but she never measured up to Oroku Saki IMO. Saki was the ultimate warrior; ninja badass. Karai was just an imitator. Hence my Darth Vader comparison. Anyone could put on Vader's mask and try to be Vader, but no one could measure up to him.

Besides, and this is just my opinion, Fichtner got picked because he's worked with Bay in the past and seeing as there is a lot of Bay's influence and meddling this film, that's why William Fichtner is Shredder. I don't know how Eastman or Laird feels about the casting, but I'm sure the question came up, "Why can't Shredder still be Oroku Saki?" At least I hope it did.

Right.

It's way too excessive and busy. Besides, that thing on his wrist reminds me of the Nickelodeon Shredder. It work for a cartoon where everything is exaggerated in the proportions and size but in a movie... not so much.

Plus, there's those giant claws on the side of his arm. I don't think anyone would want to stand next to Shredder in the fear of getting stabbed or poked accidentally. Like I said in another thread, it seems to me a kid designed Shredder and said, "Hey, you know what this needs? More blades! EVERYWHERE!"

In the comics he isn't reincarnated. He is the original Oroku Saki, from feudal Japan.

Yes. The immortal (apparently) Oroku Saki. The IDW Shredder is the strongest incarnaation yet.

Well in that case that is a disappointment. I do hope though that the film is still strong but depending on talks with my girlfriend this movie may have just become a rental.

I think this confirms Shredder is not Sachs.

So who could this mystery person be? That's clearly reflection off an eyeball.
