Well, yeah, but I'm talking more about internal consistency than real-world sense. Children of mutants almost never have the exact same powers as their parent(s), which makes the very few instances where that does happen feel really awkward to me.
Not sure if that's entirely true. There aren't a lot of mutants in the MU with children but the ones who do have mutant children, do tend to have the child take after at least one parent. I actually think this is the case more than not.
Cable, X-Man and Rachel all have TP/TK like Jean and Maddie do
Ruby Summers has optic blasts and ruby (variation on diamond) skin like Scott and Emma
Siryn has sonic scream like her father
Nightcrawler has blue skin like Mystique
The 5 Stepford Cuckoos have tp like Emma
Daken has claws and a healing factor like Wolverine
Nocturne has blue skin like Nightcrawler and can teleport. Not to mention hex bolts like Wanda
Wiccan has magic based powers like Scarlet Witch
Speed has superspeed like his Wanda's twin, Quicksilver
and of course Polaris has magnetism like Magneto
It still doesn't really sit right with me that Polaris is Magneto's daughter again. I liked it more when that was just a rumor she didn't believe. Mutant parents and children with the same powers are weird, given that mutation is presented as totally random like 90% of the time.
A mutation is random when it occurs but once a person is a mutant, the chances that their offspring will become a mutant is increased significantly. Think about it. The X-gene is in a mutant's DNA. The chances that that X-gene will be passed on is very likely to happen, especially if both parents have one. 2 mutants having a human child becomes more rare at that point. It makes total sense that the X-gene that is passed down will be similar to what the parent had
