It's not going to be a reboot, but an expansion of the Underworld franchise. Theo James (Divergent), who was in Underworld Awakening, will star in the new movie. They're casting two new female roles for the pic, which will lens next spring.

James' star is rising due to the Divergent franchise, and his Underworld Awakening contract had a sequel option, hence him 'replacing' Kate Beckinsale.

I thought he was alright and clearly a low rent fill in for scott speedman who by the way baffles me that he didnt want to come back, its not like his career took off.

I'm starting to think that they just want to move on past Beckinsale.

They no longer want to rely on her for the films to succeed.

That said, it would make more sense if they made a new film with, and passed on to the daughter they introduced in 'Awakening'.

I don't even remember the male hero from the last film that's supposedly being passed on the torch now, then again, i don't remember much from that film, the first three may not have been very good, but they seemed to have had an idea of what they wanted to do.

Good, I think a tv series would be best for this franchise, it has a lot of history to cover which is great for tv.

SyFy made a television series based on Legion for cryin' out loud! They can make one based on Underworld!!!

I think the last two Underworld movies were kinda bleh, but a tv series could be good. The mythology of these movies is great and maybe even better suited for tv series format.

Agreed. Kate should get a send off/pass the torch movie at least. Not as interested in Theo James taking over. The TV show interests me more.

Kate Beckinsale Returning for 'Underworld 5.

The actress has signed on to reprise her vampire character Selene in the fifth installment in the franchise from Lakeshore Entertainment and Screen Gems.

Directing the movie is Anna Foerster, who did 2nd unit work as well as acting a director of photography as Roland Emmerich’s right hand woman on movies such as The Day After Tomorrow and White House Down. This is the first time that a woman is directing the female-led action horror franchise.

Cory Goodman wrote the script, whose plot details are being kept shut in a coffin but is said to focus on a new and younger generation of vampires and werewolves who are locked in a seemingly never-ending battle between supernatural races.

Theo James, who appeared briefly in 2012’s Underworld: Awakening, is attached to reprise his character in this latest one as he fulfills an option agreement.


The movie will shoot October in Prague.

Seems like they went back on plans for both spin-off and sequel and combined ideas into one film.

They were smart to realize Kate is the franchise.Rise of lycans worked because it was backstory a spin-off with an awakening character wouldn't work.

Hopefully India Eisley returns as Eve.If they want to carry on ever without kate they need to work on devolping eve with Selene.

The last one was **** imo so I'd be fine with them just erasing it and making a proper sequel to Underworld Evolution.

And if they ever want to do another film without Kate why don't they just make another film with Lucian as the protagonist? There is plenty of time between Rise of the Lycans and Underworld 1 to make one or two more prequels.
