I'm assuming that YOung Sherlock bombed. But still, I wonder why certain movies get a cult following (Monster Squad) and some don't (Young Sherlock)

that was a good movie. sadly people rarely bring it up.

I remember it. Main thing I remember was a Behind the Scenes bit about the Stained Glass Knight being one of the first attempts at a CG character, but I have not seen this in at least 10 years.

Wasn't the love interest someone famous?

I don't think so....I've always liked the film....

Hound of the Baskervilles was the first Holmes book I ever read...been a casual fan of Homes since i was about 10-12 years old

Agreed. And yeah, I wonder why some hardly mention it.

Dudley: Only seconds left Holmes, I assume you've given up.

Sherlock Holmes: Never assume anything, my good fellow.

One of my favorite Holmes films. Simply brilliant. That scene with the trophy is classic.

Too bad it doesn't have a following and didn't perform well. It could have spawned some great sequels. It's funny... with all of these Batman Begins-style prequels/restarts that they've been doing recently (Casino Royale, Star Trek), if Young Sherlock Holmes was released today, I think it would do a lot better at the box office.

the scene with Watson being attacked by killer pastry still gives me the creeps

I actually tried to suggest Young Sherlock Holmes to a work colleage for her kids, and she was like "Sherlock Holmes? I dont want my kids watching any fuddy duddy detective stuff!". Even after explaining it was produced by Spielberg and written by Christopher Columbus, and has much more in common with Harry Potter and Indiana Jones than with the original novels, she still refused to show her kids.
Some people eh?

I don't understand that sort of mentalilty. 'Fuddy duddy detective stuff'? I mean, first off, people who uses 'fuddy duddy' in any sentence should get jailed. Second off, I don't see where she's coming from. Is she saying that her kids may not understand it thus getting bored? Or is she saying that it's outright boring?

There's something so ironic to use the words 'fuddy duddy' to describe a classic intellectual property like Sherlock Holmes. I'm sure she's a nice lady and all..

Basically both. She had this basic, unequivocal opinion that Sherlock Holmes was old, and therefore boring, and wouldnt be able to hold her kids attention. As much as I like this woman, her ideas on a lot of pop culture are incredibly moronic.

well, i work with a lady who likes Steven Segal movies. Not for the sake of irony or just for chuckles, but as legit entertainment.

I know, its so strange talking to people like this. I once had a conversation with this woman and another lady which went something like this:

Me: You like Star Wars right?
Her: Yea, I've got them all on DVD.
Me: Can I borrow them?
Her: Why? Dont you own them?
Me: Well, I dont because (I then went on to explain why George Lucas doesnt deserve my money because of the alterations made, and so on)
Her: So your not a true Star Wars fan then are you? If you dont own all 6 films, your not a fan.
Me:

to be fair, some people outside of geekdom may not understand the whole George Lucas thing.

I do have friends who are not very geeky who agree that they don't like what Lucas did with the originals (special editions) and the prequels.

I'm fine if someone likes all 6 movies. I would get more furious however if there's a person who prefers the prequels over the originals.

it should be interesting to see a movie where Jude Law is playing the "adult" in a friendship

I'm sorry but this movie looks like ass right now...

in what way?? you have a Holmes that is closer to the literary character than a lot of the recent media intrepretations, all the characters are characters from the novels

Yea...but accuracy doesn' make the film good right away...just from my persepective, I haven't seen much that I like from any trailer so far, and believe me I want to like this film, but...nothing is doing it for me mate...

fair enough then....being a huge reader and seeing a fair amount of books get raped when moved to the screen, Im willing to give this a fair chance as it is an "original" adventure with established characters

Alright man...yeah, I'm not much of a reader and really know diddly-squat about Holmes and all that jazz...and from my own Holmes (what I think of him)...I always thought of some English prick, holier-then-though type of attitude who is like the greatest detective and crap...and Downey seems to stray away from that...I guess, RDJ's Holmes is a lot more accurate than I imagined but still, from what I've seen, I don't get what's happening, looks like a bunch of storylines...the fight club, the nakedness, the floating girl, McAdams' character is an enigma to me...and it just seems odd, that's all...

from what I've read...Holmes is only holier than thou as it comes to his skills, he knows he's a frakkin genius but he doesn't lord it over people, he's terribly patriotic...believes in Great Britain and all that....

McAdams character (Irene Adler) appeared in one Holmes story but Holmes regards her as one of the only people he sees as an professional equal

Holmes (in his spare time) is a bare knuckle boxer and practices baritsu...which is an English self defence art with a base in japanese wrestling

Aiight man...but really, none of that comes through in the trailers, seems like the trailers are more so selling the characters (the Homes and Watson names) and the actors...
