What is Southern Culture?

Ah...the mythical land to the north...where no black/Latino man is ever hassled by anyone and can drive without worry......must be Canada......

You've obviously never been to Quebec.

You've obviously never been to Quebec.

Nope...never been there. But the point of my sarcastic not meant to be taken as a fact post was....making general sweeping statements about a section of the world rarely hits the bullseye.

Jesus H. Christ, Quebec ... you can get pulled over for being Jewish or Italian there, omg.

As I was saying....that was meant as sarcasm....sarcasm aimed at the people who keep talking like it's only the SOUTH where bad things happen.

Yeah, I know, but when there's an opportunity to let Americans and the rest of the world know how crappy Quebec is, you gotta know I'm going to take it. ;)

Sounds like an excellent thread idea.....:oldrazz:

You guys make up for your small numbers with pithy scrappiness.

As an Italian.....that is scary to me. Quebec....not one of the places I will be visiting.

I moved from Boston , Ma to Pensacola , Fl a couple years ago. People here are more talkative than they were up north. I used to think someone was crazy if they started a conversation in a check out line , but here it's commonplace. However we have a Navy Base and residents tend to be from all over.
The area is more conservative and it seems like there is a church on every road. I think Nell was right about the Fox news comparison. Of course not everyone falls into that category though. Sweet tea is delicious!! The food and weather patterns are also big differences.

Well, I'm European. So for me it was a particularly fun experience. Blacks dislike you because you're White (though they did warm up when I made it clear that I wasn't a Southerner), and the Whites look at you funny because you're a foreigner. But hey at least they don't lynch you anymore.

On the plus though, being white, I never got pulled over by the cops. Which is more than can be said for some of the Latinos I knew.

But I may be accentuating the negatives. The South has some nice things too. The topography is beautiful. It's a fairly inexpensive place to live. And people will pretty much leave you alone, if you leave them alone. Provided you're white of course.

Lets back off on the generalizations shall we. I doubt you were here for more than a year, and the South isn't a place you want to judge based on a short stay. It takes years to get to really know a place properly, especially a place like the South which doesn't hide its faults too well. Yes, there are racists; black and white racists. Its to be expected. Some on both sides just can't let the **** go. For the majority however, we get along just fine. We don't dwell on it. You do not have to be white to enjoy a good life in the south.

I know a lot of latinos, and they do get pulled over a lot, because they speed all the time (they admit this) or were running on a dead tag. Illegal immigrants, which we are not in short supply, usually have a BS license, and have never taken a driving course. Hence, the constant tickets.

I was just looking at stats, and the hispanic population in my state has grown 394% since 1990!:wow:

Yeah, the weather patterns are ****ing insane lol. Last week it was 30 degrees and icing, and today it is in the 80s.

It's nice.

It's slower and more laid back.

Generaly pretty important.

Well....we don't walk around having discussion about while having lunch at Burger King or shopping at WalMart. It's usually only brought up by Northeners who seem to think that it's an overwhelming obsession to us.

Being friendly to strangers.

C. Lee for the win here.

I grew up in North Carolina. I'm now 29 and I still live there. My group of friends in high school was white, black, Mexican, Iranian, and probably a few other things that just didn't register to me at the time. I am a somewhat conservative Southern Baptist (my wife is a good bit more conservative than I am). My best friend is very liberal agnostic. I went to a very liberal university (UNC), where I (and many people like me) made my first openly gay friends. My home town (Durham, NC) was recently named the most "Tolerant City" by some magazine (I can't remember what it was). On one side, I have a cousin with a black husband and two biracial children. On the other side, I have a cousin who apparently recently started a lesbian relationship with a black woman. That's been my Southern experience.

And yeah, none of us own slaves. Guess we missed the boat on that one.

When I vacation in Florida (Jacksonville), I long for being back home where people are rude and you always suspect an ulterior motive.

lol, I am exaggerating slightly for comic effect. But yeah, Quebec is one of the few places in the G7 countries where you'll still get crapped on for being the wrong kind of white person. Toronto is full of French-speaking white people from Quebec who can't get jobs in their home province because their last name is Rosenberg or Halek.

I live in Eastern North Carolina...

Sweet Ice Tea. ( I love the thick syrup like Burger King Sweet Ice Tea, last time I had it it was weaker :( )

People can't drive in the snow.

Lots of churches. Ex, there's a Mormon Church (which, I must say, looks pretty nice and big) and two other types, both Christian I believe, within a mile of me. At least 8 in total where I live, probably forgetting a few.

People like Tobacco. I like it, don't smoke or dip anymore though. Would love to smoke a blu though one day.

BBQ.

Hunting.

Despite the popular stereotype of bigotry I've been hearing, the ancedotal evidence I've heard from Asian-Americans, some of them in my own family, is that life in the south is pretty good for them.

Haha people down here vompletely forget how to drive in snow. This past winter we got a sudden somewhat heavy snow (6inches is heavy for us) in a matter of about an hour and there were 30+ wrecks on my street. Everyone lost their minds.

If you look back into Louisiana's past and the Creoles, Acadians, and Cajuns, you'd wonder how bigots like the KKK ever made it down here. Everyone's always seemed pretty chill; if you're into the supernatural and all that, you'd like Louisiana.

Yep. Years ago I worked at Walmart. It snowed...people were panicking at walmart. Leaving work early. I was pushing carts in the snow...I was sliding all over the place, cause um, I guess ice was forming on the parking lot or some ****. I asked to leave an hour early and got it. :funny: I left a co-worker to handle the entire parking lot. By himself.

I was born and raised on NHRA. Top fuel dragsters, 0-320+ mph in 4 seconds (faster acceleration than a space shuttle), 6,000+ hp, 6,000 torque. Standing at the line when those bad boys take off! That will get your heart racing.
