It's a shame this movie turned out the way it did. Had it been more thoughtfully put together, I think it might have been something special. A wealthy businessman manipulating the media and governments to his own ends is a really strong (not to mention relevant) concept for a villain, but unfortunately the writers kind of squandered it and the actor wasn't helping matters by hamming it up so much either. I also think it's a shame they didn't make better use of the Chinese locations they had. As it stands though, Tomorrow Never Dies feels like a bog standard, paint-by-numbers Bond flick.

Brosnan continues to be... Brosnan. I think he deliberately tried to be all things to all people. He tried to play Bond as a pastiche of all the previous actors' strengths, and I'm sure if you're a Brosnan fan you probably think that makes him the proverbial "total package", whereas I view his performance as more of a "jack of all trades, master of none" type of thing. He just comes across as very bland to me and doesn't seem to have any definable qualities of his own. Eh... whatever. That's enough about Brosnan.

Despite its mediocrity, I won't say I loved the movie, but I enjoyed it.

2/5

Brosnan's defining feature is his painface.

That being said, Brosnan imo was the least of the problems that plagued his era. I don't even blame the writers or the directors. Given the history of the series and their track record post Brosnan, I squarely put the blame on Babs and Michael. GE is a fantastic Bond movie bar Eric Serra's atrocious score and with the film's success, the producers lost their minds completely as evidenced in 2002's DAD where they hired and allowed Tamohori to do and say the crap he did.

Non-Stop

Not a bad whodunnit movie. Better than expected and I didn't see that ending coming. 7.5/10

Batman (1989)
10/10

Earth vs. the Flying Saucers: Poorly written sci-fi flick that's only worth watching for Ray Harryhausen's effects.

Goodbye World (2014) is about a family who lives off the grid that has a reunion with some friends. They used to own a business together and one of them kind of took control, forcing the others out, so there's some tension there. There's also some issues because some of them used to date. Also, they were all kind of anti-corporate/government crusaders in their rebellious youth.

Anyway, a terrorist strike takes out all of the power in the country...so this little area with well water and solar panels comes in handy. So...what happens when other people find out about this place?

This movie moves reeeaaaaally slooooooow. Ultimately, that allows the movie to create well-rounded characters...showing you what makes them tick, their outside interests etc...so that as the situation gets more serious and things start to deteriorate, you understand each person's decisions. There's a twist or two that seems needless. It's a little heavy handed with the political preaching as well. Unfortunately, the big climax that one assumes will eventually come kind of just fizzles out. Action just isn't what this film is about, so don't expect a bunch. It's about whether or not people, all with their own interests, selfishness etc can co-exist when the crap hits the fan.

For me, it ranks right around other genre movies that tried to be more than another slice of the same crap but missed the target a bit...like the recent zombie film The Returned.

The Nut Job

I don't know what to make of it really. It's got a lot of references in it and some obvious homage/cameo/rip offs mostly from other animated movies and it was somewhat boring but not enough to turn it off.

Overall it's an okay kids movie but most adults probably would be bored by it.

X-Men - 8/10

Started my X-Men marathon tonight. Going to watch Days Of Future Past on Monday.

Godzilla 2014: Very entertaining, well made and enjoyable second attempt at an American Godzilla, a far better movie than Emmerich's 98 attempt which wasn't a true Godzilla movie but GINO. This is how to do Godzilla on film for Americans.

Sleepaway Camp on blu-ray: The PQ restoration is fantastic on Scream Factory's blu-ray and this movie creeped me out when i was 10 years old renting it even that ending was a real shocker.

X-Men Days of the Future Past: One of the best X-Men movies since X2 and First Class! a satisfying sequel to a franchise despite a couple of bad sequels.

The Elephant Man: such a brilliant, heartbreaking and moving masterpiece that made me cry as a kid when i saw it on TV, Anthony Hopkins gives a great performance.

The Slumber Party Massacre on blu-ray: Not a good movie by any other means but a decent time waster that looks good on HD.

X-Men: Days of Future Past - Amazing movie with full of heart, hope, charm and emotion.
