I've been looking forward to watching this movie for many months. First, I'll comment on what I thought was the most prominent weakness in The Raid 2 - the convoluted plot. I appreciate Edwards attempting to build some character arcs, but it didn't need to include so much material. During the first hour or so, the action scenes were disrupted by too many plot points I didn't care to hear about, and I found myself just anxiously waiting for the next set piece. I would have preferred a leaner story with fewer characters.
Now, with that out of the way... DEAR GOD, the action. The oh so glorious action. The last time a movie has made the adrenaline just rush throughout my body was...hehe The Raid, but here in #2 it was jolted up to the nth level. Edwards deserves a medal for what he choreographed here. It's just outrageously amazing, and well worth sitting through some of the less desirable stuff.
So yes not a perfect movie and you know what, I don't care. I will still watch it numerous times, and squeal in joy from all the insanity I'm witnessing. Edwards, keep it coming.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - 5 out of ******* 5
Ladies and gentleman, THIS, is what blockbusters and sequels should be like. Genuine, emotional, upping the scale but still feeling personal, depth, fantastic characters and stunning visuals. THIS is why we go to the movies, my god I can't praise this film enough. I seriously have little to no complaints about this film at all.
Not a bad movie, but definitely a disappointing one. Stock characters, uneven pacing, and very forced melodrama really hurt what could have been an excellent movie. It's decent enough, but not much more than that. The themes aren't explored so much as they are bashed over your head.
Effects were outstanding and the battles looked impressive, but aside from that, the first movie was better in every regard.
