The Room - 2/10

Every bit as bizarre as I'd heard it was, maybe even more so. The movie was darker tonally than I'd expected it to be. Everyone rightly talks about how horrible Wiseau's performance was but Juliette Danielle, who played Lisa, is every bit as bad. The woman who played Michelle was much better and probably should've been Lisa. I would've rated this a 1/10 but Claudette was wonderful (seriously, I'd watch a whole movie about her and her man and money problems) and so raised the score.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

It's one of those rare sequels that by all means shouldn't work, but it does. The first Jumanji was one of my favorite childhood movies that I used to watch all the time on VHS. Not to mention I also read the original book as a kid. So coming into this, I was expecting just a sequel that is years too late doing some uninspired stuff. Much like the Goosebumps movie (also from Sony strangely enough). this was able to take the original and expand on it and have some good character moments. Where the original was a board game, this literally turns it into a video game from the 90s without over explaining it which was good. It's a clever reverse of the original movie. They were able to play off of the cliches of a 90s video game and make it fun and adventurous. It also makes a good case for the first good video game movie. The cast is what made the movie great. The Rock, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan were all at their best here and you get a great sense of camaraderie between them and the comedy was excellent. The only thing they missed on was the villain. As much as I love Bobby Cannavale, he is no Jonathan Hyde. They didn't give him much to do which was a shame. Overall, it's a shockingly good sequel that almost nobody expected.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle ............ B

Silly harmless dumb fun. Cast had good chemistry. Karen Gillan is now one of my top 5 hotties.

I think this was the first Dwayne Johnson/Kevin Hart team-up I watched.

It's a small little indie drama comedy that is all about self reflection. Ben Stiller pretty much plays the middle class white guy who's going through a midlife crisis. You see all the friends who became way more successful than him and he becomes very insecure. There's a lot of narration by Stiller in this which could have been annoying, but I thought it worked. There's not a whole lot going on in terms of plot. It's Ben Stiller's character and his son visiting various different colleges. But the performances were really great. It's Mike White's first time directing and he did a pretty good job overall.

"He tried to kill me with a forklift, OLE!" is now stuck on my head.
