First Avenger Who Is Composing?

Damn, I forgot to mention Predator. How could I?

Silvestri also wrote music for Forrest gump, so he has scored a contemporary film too. My favorite track from that film is "Forrest meets Forrest".

While I feel like it's been a LOOONG time since Silvestri produced a great score, this definitely has more potential than a lot of the superhero scores we've been getting lately, imo.

Oh, I wouldn't say a LOOONG time since his last great original score. Beowulf was only 3 & 1/2 years ago.

Beowulf was and is a good score but really nothing special from Silvestri. Just Van Helsing type of writing from him. Plus I expected more from this score and movie (that's for another topic or thread). But the score doesn't quite stack up to these scores, imo. Like I hoped it would.

Plus the track "Beowulf Slays the Beast" reminds of the track "Stage Coach" from Night at the Museum, which he also composed. In the middle of that track from Beowulf I mentioned above. Even had a part that sounded like it was taken from his What Lies Beneath score. Yeah the Beowulf theme was nice, but repetitive. I was disappointed when i found out that the Beowulf main title was short just like in the film. I was hoping he would've extended it for the album. Williams tends to do that sometimes. But I don't think the theme really went all out in the film or album. Sounded like they used the theme the same way in the movie.(In some parts at least.) So it felt repetitive. Now don't get me wrong I enjoyed the score, but I don't think it really pushed Silvestri much. The score didn't stack up to some classics scores in the same genre like the ones I mentioned above either. But that's just my opinion.

As for him scoring Cap. Tens years ago I'd of been celebrating. I've already paid the price with being too excited for Silvestri scoring a big movie two years ago with GIJOE. That score was a huge disappointment, imo. Especially since he's usually gold when he's scoring Sommer's movies. Everytime I listen to his GIJOE score it doesn't get better for me. Although I still haven't heard or seen A-team. I was thrilled when he signed on. Hoping that he would erase his GIJOE score and deliver a score that would remind me of why I became a fan of Silvestri's music in the first place. All I've learned from most of the people who've heard it was that it was another disappointment. Some even claimed his GIJOE score was better. So I'm going to hold my excitement till I see the movie (CA:TFA).

Silvestri as of late has been hit or miss. The last score I was mpressed with of his was Van Helsing. That was 7 years ago. Night at the Museum had it's moments, but overall an average score from Silvestri. It's sequel judging from the film (b/c I don't have the album) was more of the same from him as well. So it's kind of hard for me right now to get excited for a Silvestri score. That hurts to say, but he's been in a slump these past few years and hasn't recovered . So it's hard for me to believe Cap will get him out of it, but we'll see. I hope it does.

Well putting ANYTHING up against Poledouris's Conan score is gonna make the contender look bad by comparison. The Conan score is to me is the best score ever made, for any film and I've held that opinion for decades. I mean it does so much of the work in that film that it would've been just a shell of itself w/o it or w/ even a different score. That score is at least half the reason the film itself was any good. I've never seen another film that was so carried by/dependent on it's score as Conan The Barbarian. The rest you mentioned...eh, they're good but not nearly in the same class.

Getting back to Beowulf though, one of the things I liked best was the "hero comes home" song/melody in it. Now I have no idea if Silvestri wrote or composed it or if someone else did that bit of the score but it was really good.

Let's just all rejoice that we've got a real composer and not a Zimmer clone.

I'm pleased with this choice. A nice old fashioned choice. I like it.

Actually I must confess I am glad Danny Elfman didn't get the job. Not because I don't like him or his music, it's just that he's done plenty of comic book scores.

Well there was no chance Johnston would want to work with Elfman again after Wolfman.

Elfman and Johnston got on very well, it was Universal who caused the problems. Johnston was highly complementary towards Elfman and is a contributer to Elfman's book which is out in a month or so.

On this note, The Wolfman score is awesome. What universal were thinking, I've no idea.

Yeah, he was complimentary when he first signed on, but when Elfman walked due to 'scheduling' conflicts because of the delays, he was also quoted as having a dig at Johnston, saying something like "That film is a mess, and I have no idea what Joe is doing with it."

Not saying your full of it, but until I see a link, I won't believe it.

..........But its kinda hard not too :o

Trying to find the quote but having no luck. I'm pretty sure it was during an interview for Alice in Wonderland.

That talks about the rumours. I remember there being rumours about Elfman actually being fired, and a few tweets from industry peeps, which eventually died down, until Elfman said something kinda inflammatory during Alice. That's my memory of it.

Aw crap, i'll have to go here...I have a history with kneavey...little git.

I'll see what I can find

Here's A quote from Elfman, dated at during production.

"This has happened to me before, and I know it's going to happen now. You're going to re-cut the film and my score isn't going to work."

What, you thought the score worked in Wolfman? I thought it was edited horribly.

I wasn't comparing the scores to Conan The Barbarian. I was just making a point that I didn't believe Beowulf rivaled those scores. I was hoping Silvestri would of set a bar for the genre. But oh well still a good score anyway.

Yeah Silvestri along with Glen Ballard wrote the oscar bait "Hero Comes Home" song. Robin Wright Penn sung the same song in the actual film as well. Although more to the tone of the time period that the film took place. I thought Penn and Menzel sung the song nicely. And I liked how one of the major themes of the movie was performed on the Menzel version. Very powerful and epic.

Back to Sivestri scoring Cap. I just hope he will do more than just write a good theme. I hope the score will be as memorable and good as the theme for Cap. Assuming Cap. will have a powerful and memorable theme. I say this b/c some of his scores he tends to write a good theme, but the rest of the score with an exception to few a cues are filler. Like Night At The Museum, for example.

I bet if Silvestri turned this down. Elfman was next on speed dial. Elfman's also open this summer. He doesn't have a movie coming up (so far) until October. So I wouldn't find it hard to believe if Johnston hired Elfman if Silvetri had turned it down. But I'm not complaining that Elfman didn't get the job.

Funny you mention this b/c I was listening to Elfman's Wolfman score yesterday. I finally bought it last month. Man I'm enjoying every bit of it. I think this score is underrated. I'm surprised this score didn't get a lot of talk and praise last year like Inception and Tron Legacy did. Elfman's Wolfman score (is to me anyway) one of the underrated scores of last year. It's a shame of what happened to the score in the final product and what Universal tried to pull by hiring Paul Haslinger of all people to write a score LOL. B/c a producer saw the trailer and suggested a contemporary/modern score instead of an old fashioned score that Elfman provided. At least Johnston fought to get it put back in the film. Eventhough the music still suffered from it. You don't see directors do that anymore.

Back on Cap. I hope Johnston pushes Silvestri. Not only to the point of delivering a score that does justice to the film and character, but also be one of Silvestri's best scores in years.

He said no such thing.

Elfman's score was initially rejected because a trailer was edited using some contemporary rock music and some head said "Let's score the entire film that way". JJ fought for Elfman's score and eventually the head's realised the score wasn't working. They reinstated Elfman's score but he was unable to come back because he was working on Alice. so Conrad Pope was brought in to edit some of Elfman's music because Elfman had scored a significantly longer movie.

Elfman got on very well with JJ who has praised his score and is contributing to his 25th anniversary book with Burton. There's nothing to see here, they got on fine. There's even a video of Elfman at the Alice premiere saying how he enjoyed working with JJ but knew there would be problems down the line. People tried to make up that Ang Lee and Elfman didn't get on either, yet Lee asked Elfman to score another movie two years ago.

Sorry for the mini rant but it bothers me when people make up rumors about Elfman. If people would just watch a few interviews they'd realise how modest, self-depreciating and down to earth he is.

No doubt about that. 'The Travelling Montage' in particular is gorgeous.

I wasn't making anything up about Elfman, I have a vague memory of something like that happening. I love Elfman, but he's a very strong personality so he's not going to get on with anyone. If he's on good terms with Johnston now, great, but I do remember a quote that got tweeted around where he took a swing at the studio and he mentioned Johnston in a somewhat negative way. Thats what I was going by. If they're all good though, great.
