First Avenger Who Is Composing?

I fail to understand, why's all of a sudden, everyone seems to hate Ramin's Iron Man I score. It's really spectacular. I mean, when I'm reading some Iron Man comics or thinking about Iron Man, some particular themes from the movie are coming to my mind & that's awesome.

My favorite tracks from the movie:

* Driving With The Top Down
* Merchant of Death
* Fireman

* Mark II
* Iron Man (the last part of the song is just epic! Definitely needs to be a theme of Stark in The Avengers)

Because it's unbearably generic and simple. Debney's IM2 score isn't exactly brilliant but at least it doesn't sound like a teenager wrote it, there's some really intelligent use of woodwinds in there. Here are some reviews that put it way better than I can.

And why does Ramin's score sound like a teenager wrote it? Because he used electric guitar? Seriously, this is a score thread, let's get technical here. i'm assuming since we're all in this thread, we have an interest in film scores and music in general, so lets critically assess this. I'll pose a debate question...

Q: Would people have rather had a more simplified, orchestral score for Iron Man 1, similar to most comic book movies, or did people like the guitar work in the score we had and think that suited the tone?

Serious question, let's talk this out! I'm not crazy, but film music is one of those things that I have always loved but I don't really get to talk about enough with out feeling majorly dorky :D

General cord progressions. You can't compare anything in IM to 'Mayhem In Monoco' from IM2.

I'm not opposed to guitars in scores, it worked in Inception and Wanted for some recent examples. But in IM it was just obnoxious and generic, and from someone with a bit of a background in music, it bothered me that RD got the gig over countless other composers who could have wrote something half decent.

Thank god Marvel realised what a mistake it was to hire him.

I don't think, that the score is similar to what some teenager with a guitar might have compose. And quite frankly, I really don't care what some bunch of unknown music critics have said about Iron Man's soundtrack.

The score suits Tony Stark as a character & his lifestyle just fine: quick, strong, always on the edge & always discovering some new tech stuff.

Neither of them are 'unknown music critcs' but suit yourself. I wasn't trying to force my opinion on anyone and if you like it then that's great, I wish I could.

No problem) Peace!

I haven't really listened to either Iron Man score or the Hulk one. Based on what's in the movies though I've found them to be decent but unmemorable, with a few exceptions like Driving with the Top Down. It's one area that I think Marvel has been lacking.

Thor's was pretty damned good though and I'm loving the ten minute preview from Silvestri so it looks like they're headed in the right direction.

I've been wanting to pick up the IM sound tracks actually myself. I just like movie music. lol

As someone who is a bigger fan of the Iron Man 2 score, let me just say....I also like the Iron Man 1 score :p

I like the action music, but the score doesn't exactly blow me away. I mean, it's not bad, but it just reminds me of every single, patriotic American military film I've seen before, and I kinda wanted something more unique than that for Cap. Especially, as an non-American, it conjures up too many pro-American action movies, and I know Cap is about more than that, not about flag waving and I don't necessarily think that score will convey that to an audience who doesn't really know who he is, or is on the fence because of the patriotic American angle.

Also, it isn't nearly as engaging and compelling to me as other Marvel tracks, like Driving with the Top Down in IM or The Flower in TIH, which were great.

I don't know, I feel as if it struck a nice balance and not too flag wavy for me :yay: but at the same time, I get where you are coming from.

This one track is an example of a big problem I had with IM2's score. Not the score itself(which I enjoyed very much) but you can barely hear it in during the movie. The sounds of the race cars drowns it out too much.

Oh and Cap's score is sounding very good. :up:

I think all 3 Marvel scores this year have been good. I'd put Thor's over XM:FC and I can already tell I'd put Cap's over it as well but I'm not sure whether I like Cap's or Thor's better. Once the whole score is released I'll be able to better judge it.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I think as an American, you'd be less sensitive or perceptive to how 'American' something feels.

I think that's pretty unfair. Whether you like the IM score or not is it's own thing, and each to their own, but to criticise RD to that extent is entirely unjustified, especially with his fantastic work currently on Game of Thrones, not to mention his co-work on many big movies, like Batman Begins and Pirates.

I don't get why people need their film scores to match a 'type'. I would say Iron Man 2's score was far more generic than Iron Man 1, simply because Debney's score sounded like the kind of film score you've heard before, whereas Djwadi's score didn't. It felt unique, it felt specific and it was effective and contained, like everything else in that movie. His music really made those Stark Lab scenes for me.

Edit: Also, not liking something for it's 'general chord progressions'? Is that like the majority of Supehero films (Cap included) having a basic 3 Major chord theme? (If they're darker or anti-heroes, it's 3 Minor chords)

Those are very good but from the IM1 soundtrack I think my favorite is:

* Vacation's Over

Especially the part from 00:28 - 1:58.

@Kedrell, big call on the Thor over XMFC scores... I really liked Magneto's theme, and how it changes with him throughout the movie :P

I think Caps is easily the best of all of Marvel's scores already. It fits him perfectly. It also craps all over Green Lantern's disappointing score.

Well, here's how I arrived at my choice. The Thor score most of it I can just listen to whether it's in the movie or all by itself. With the XM:FC score, it mostly just works in conjuction with watching the movie. Listening to it on it's own? Not so much. I really DO like the way the music works during the submarine lifting scene. Very good there and I think it's about the best that that score ever reaches.

It's been a very long time since I heard any memorable music for comic book films. I remember most of IM's music actually. It isn't amazing, but it's memorable. I don't remember Thor's or TIH's. Music doesn't have to be iconic like STM or special as B89 but they should at least be memorable.

I'm liking Cap's so far but I'll need to see how it works with the film as well (I generally appreciate scores better after that)

For me I prefer Thor's atm, but that's with the 'hindsight' of seeing and hearing the main fanfare in particular work so well in the scenes where he regains the Hammer and the swooping credits shot through the galaxy/Yggdrasil to Asgard.

THAT...WAS...AWESOME! The best musical credits sequence I've seen in a superhero movie since Donner's Superman.

I would LOVE a screen saver of Yggdrasil. lol

I agree in part Kedrell, although X-Men First Class has more numbers that conjure up particularly powerful scenes in my mind. For instance, Mag's vs the Banker, Turning the satellite and then lifting the sub are all great and then enhanced for me because I remember all the drama inherent in the scene. The same goes for Thor failing to lift the hammer and Loki falling.

I don't think the music HAS to be memorable to work or be good but I think if you listen to a track after seeing a movie, if the score is good, it will make you want to see that movie again.

One reason I think TDK's score was so good was it had very memorable and engaging action music, which too few movies seem to have now. I can't think of the last movie score I bought where I don't skip through all the big, action tracks.

It's the first score in a while that combined with the footage gave me that nice 'goosepimply' tingly feeling on seeing it.
