Who should challenge Trump in 2020? - Part 1

I tried to include as many options as possible, even some of the more zany conspiracy theory ones.

I still think Cory Booker is the most likely option but Sanders does intrigue me. Also, if you want feel free to include who they might include as a running mate? I could see Cory and Warren teaming up with Keith Ellison as Chair of the DNC but I have no idea who Sanders would choose as a running mate

1.) The economy

2.) Bush Jr. won re-election.
Wallstreet is doing better but Job growth slowed dramatically under Trump for the first time in 7 years and the next 3 years aren't looking to be better hell with all the mergers there will be a lot of people getting laid off

As for bush winning re-election it was against 2 pro-iraq war candidates
¯\_(?)_/¯ and the dem flip flopped

Dubya won re-election because he was riding the "patriotic" wave after 9-11.

Yeah, I feel like there is some serious selective memory going on with GWB and his popularity now. Yeah, it’s easy to look back on Bush now and say if our country was dumb enough to vote for him twice they are dumb enough to vote for Trump again but it wasn’t that clear cut in 2004. The economy was doing good, the war in Iraq was devisive but there were a ton of people gave him a pass because “we have to keep our country safe”, and John Kerry was an uninspiring candidate. Yeah, Bush was awful, and incompetent but he wasn’t as outwardly awful and incompetent as Trump until about six or so years into his presidency to people that only casually paid attention to politics. I don’t think Trump has no chance of winning re-election I just think he’s got a worse chance than probably any incumbent in modern day. I don’t even think another 9/11 could save his presidency simply because he lacks basic empathy or the ability to be sympathetic or likable during a national tragedy. I hated Bush but at least he gave an outward appearance of being “likable”.

Sorry to go off topic but I'm so proud a thread of mine went over the thread manager's limit :)

Ha. I'm really looking forward to redoing this pool soon after the midterms to see if peoples votes have changed. I'm sure they have

Based on how democrats are reacting to everything, I'm pretty much convinced the democrats are going to run a far-left individual in 2020.

That's a shame and independents in center left or center right (or both) will decide the 2020 election.

If that happens, hello two-term Orange *****e.

I did my 2017 taxes and then did multiple calculators to estimate my 2018 tax return and it looks like I'm going to get back a whole lot more $$$ this time 2019. I can't wait for tax return time in 2019.

I make a total annual gross of 90k. I'm not rich.

Once a ton of middle class Americans also realize this, Trump is going to have a much better chance of being re-elected.

I guess CNN bombarding us with "the tax cut ONLY helps the rich" isn't true.

I don't know that a lot of people are going to get back "a lot" more. Circumstances differ. But who knows? With the change there'll probably enough people doing a little better with it he might get a slight boost.

That'll wear off by the 2020 election though, most likely, in terms of making much difference.

You mean the same democrats that not so long ago purged their progressive wing?

Weird.

There are plenty of freakin' ultra-progressives still in the party. What are you even talking about? Warren and Waters and Ellison and Jackson and Lee and Jayapal, to name a few.

They have a freakin' congressional group.

Bernie's presidential venture not panning out doesn't change that.

None of them qualify as "freaking ultra" progressives. Laughable.

Bullcrap. Warren's in-line with Sanders on on the economic stuff, Ellison's far more extreme than Sanders on the social stuff. Jayapal's about as vocal as it gets with the "viva la resistance!" stuff this year.

They're not Obama centrists, by any means.

In line with Sanders? You mean soft, center left policies that every other civilized countries implement? Policies that wouldn't be out of line for Eisenhower? Very bullcrap, yes.

Obama is a moderate Republican from the 60's. Which once again shows centrism means nothing. The center is always moving.

Yup then insurance premiums go up and BOOM there goes that nice little extra in your pocket.

Say what you want about the ACA, about how it really isn't a leftist program, but it sure as hell moved the needle.

Tacit, if your starting point is "Sanders is mainstream", there's really nothing that can be done for you. That's not a position any debate is going to persuade you away from.

Live and let live, do as you will, but most of the country doesn't see it that way.

Sure, totally.

He'd never be winning any general elections though. That's the thing. Plays well on the coasts (even then, only parts of the coasts), he or someone with his particular brand of leftism would never pull the country as a whole.
