The Rise of Skywalker Who Should Direct Episode IX?

It wouldn't surprise me if Johnson still ends up directing.

It sucks to hear that but I still won't write it off. Take out some of those words and Abrams said the same thing. Crazier things have happened in this industry... I mean look at Lucasfilm now. So I don't see how it's impossible he'll return. We'll see where we are by next year if they want to get it out on a certain date and will prefer to get someone who's worked with them before with a good experience and is familiar with dealing with them.

Honestly, if Johnson doesn't take the director's job, I think if Ron Howard is delivering great, encouraging footage of the Han Solo movie, I say he would be a fine choice to end this new trilogy. That's just me though.

I had that thought as well.

Doing films like this are mentally and physically taxing. Not surprising Rian Johnson would want to do something else after Last Jedi.

So Abrams may be back in the game.

EXCLUSIVE: Rian Johnson decided not to take the offer to come back and replace the recently departed Colin Trevorrow on Star Wars: Episode IX. Now, Disney and LucasFilm are courting another director for an encore, the one who relaunched the franchise to dizzying heights. Deadline hears the studio is in talks with JJ Abrams, and sources said they are trying to work out a deal for him to return. This is expected to happen today.

Abrams revived the franchise with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, whose $2.06 billion worldwide gross made it the third highest grossing film of all time behind James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic.

Abrams is in discussions to replace Trevorrow, who exited the picture after creative differences with LucasFilm and its chief Kathleen Kennedy. All this happens as Ron Howard stepped in to replace Phil Lord & Chris Miller as director of the Han Solo spinoff movie.

very disappointing news.at least johnson may have done something original with last jedi.

I approve of Abrams, and I'm glad he's writing as well as directing, but who the hell invited Terrio to this party?

Well, to be fair to Terrio, he's done good work when partnered with a competent director.

A bit of surprise. But, not objecting.

Note how the SW press release announcing J.J.'s return doesn't mention the May 2019 release. I think it will be moved back, just like TFA and TLJ.

Haha what a joke. Just like Episode 7 was a rehash of Episode 4.

9 will be the same as 6.

A solid, if unspectacular choice.

I'm sure we'll be hearing about a release change soon enough. No doubt December 2019 (Poor Wonder Woman) or May 2020.

This movie will be competent AF.

Yep. Very well edited, very well paced.

Lets hope for something original and more memorable though.

I actually feel better about Terrio than JJ. At least he'll take chances. Lets hope Disney allows it and JJ executes it well.

Can't say I'm pleased with this. TFA has not aged very well with me over repeat viewings. Just seems a safe and uninspired choice.

I was hoping for Johnson or someone new but JJ isn't a terrible choice.

At least it's not Trevorrow.

My thoughts exactly.

The Force Awakens was the worst film of all time, just a rehash on A New Hope. I now expect Episode 9 will be a rehash of Return of the Jedi.

This is bad news.

Here is who should have been brought on to direct episode 9, George Lucas himself.
