The Rise of Skywalker Who Should Direct Episode IX?

I would like to think it matters, but it honestly doesn't. Kennedy and Disney will either find a "name" who'll play the game, or a pliable hired gun that they can mold onto their banal vision for Star Wars.
You describe JJ and Rian to a tee. :atp:

Joss Whedon + Tim Burton. A co-op project.

Joss would have been great for the Han Solo movie but I'm dying to see Ava Duverney do a film on this scale

What if Disney said screw it and let Edgar Wright do it?

Gareth Edwards is probably free atm so Disney might turn to him.

Rian Johnson indicated months ago that he had some projects he wanted to work on after TLJ so he may not want to take on Episode 9.

Whedon is busy finishing Justice League and Episode 9 script talks and preproduction meetings will probably need to begin pretty quickly. So Idk if Whedon would want to take that on. WB may also already have plans for Whedon. Plus his exwife airing his supposed dirty laundry may have turned Disney off of him for now.

Abrams is the safe bet, but I dont want Episode 9 to be another TFA that skips over backstory and history and character details.

Denis Villeneuve would be an exciting choice.

Im not interested in Spielberg at all. Or Nolan.

Gareth Edwards... The guy they had to fix Rogue One for? :funny:

Cameron or Nolan and make it an actual good film rather than a "blockbuster".

Cameron only cares about 3D, eyecandy, and Avatar now. Plus, hed never be able to stick to Disney's schedule. Itd take him a decade just to finish the script.

Star Wars is space opera. Space wizards and magic and aliens. That stuff is not even remotely in Nolan's wheelhouse.

In a perfect world James Cameron or Steven Spielberg would do it. They're perfect for the material, but too "big shot" right now to follow someone else's plans. Right now i would say that Rian Johnson's their best choice. They seem very happy with what he's done, so far Episode VIII has been the only new SW film without any production problems and he has said that if he was called for another SW film he would "do it in a heart beat".

I loved the idea of each new Saga film being made by a different young Director. But that doesn't seem to be working so well with Lucasfilm's tight schedule.

They are far from perfect. Steven Spielberg isn't a good fit for Star Wars anymore, if Crystal Skull is any indication. Even BFG was bland and pretty boring. That was written by Melissa Matheson, who wrote ET and it was her last film.

There's no guarantee Johnson would be on board or want to come back after Jedi. He might want to move on.

I have to disagree there. Crystal Skull was indeed a disappointment, but The BFG had plenty of magical Spielberg moments. The weakest part was by far the final act, which felt tonaly at odds with much of what had come before. Just the moments where the main characters are exploring dreams shows that Spielberg is one of the few Directors who could bring that "sense of wonder" from seeing a new different world.

The failure in his films usualy come from the scripts, not the Directing. He has often elevated a film from what was just a decent script.

Rhymes.
Didn't Disney get him off of Ant-Man because he's not the kind who'd meet their deadline? Sure MCU section and SW are worlds apart, but I'm guessing that same rule applies.

"Hello, Mr. Lynch... yeah. We were wondering if you'd be interested in directing the new Star Wars. No. No, we won't pay you in salad. No. No, Luke can't spend half the movie in a new body without memories of who he is..."

That's all Cameron ever does is make "blockbusters". He would be a horrendous choice.

If she's done with post on A Wrinkle in Time then Disney should definitely consider her.

They are not going to close out the trilogy with a first time director.

I would not call Filoni a "first-time director", as he has multiple directorial credits on The Clone Wars and Rebels. He also worked directly with Lucas and has an intimate understanding of Star Wars.

If not Rian Johnson, I defer back to Brad Bird.

in terms of production time, best plan for Disney is to extend Rian Johnson's contract to direct Star Wars: Episode 9

Maybe they should delay it then like they did with episode 8

Directing animated episodes is not the same as directing a movie.

I'm adding Guillermo to my wish list.

1. Spielberg
2. GDT
3. Rian Johnson
4. JJ Abrams

What about Peter Jackson?? I know he's producing Mortal Engines right now, but would he be an interesting voice to add to the SW family, no?
