The Avengers "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be Hemsworthy, shall possess the power of Thor" - Part 1

I know it's not happening. I know that there's no romance at all in this movie; and hell, there's almost no women, period. And that's to the movie's detriment, as I've said many times before. The inability of Avengers to cross-reference its prequel movies --- and here, I'm not limiting this to *just* the romantic subplots established in those, but in all the other subplots as well --- is going to create big holes in the continuities of Thor 2, Iron Man 3, and any theoretical sequels to Cap and Hulk's films.

Only according to you .....

The movie's pre-screening have put the film around 2.5 hours long and that's before the final edit. They have to setup the threat, catch people up with the films characters, develop the motley crew aspect of their team ..... and then save the world. There's no time for anything else and trying to cram in romance would come across shallow. Not to mention if all the heroes have damsels in distress in this film, it would be overkill and redundant. It would also be unfair to simply focus on only a couple of them so Whedon did did the smart thing by opting for none.

Not really, any holes are minor and can be dealt with in a few lines of dialogue

Where's Rhodey? "He's overseas doing some work for the government"

Where's Jane? "She's off doing some research, you should go see her, after you, y'know, help us stop your maniacal brother"

Where's Peggy? "She's dead"

Where's Betty? "Who cares, there won't be another Hulk movie"

And I'd be perfectly okay with Whedon addressing the other films this way (even if I don't agree with some of the cop-outs, but I get the gist of what you mean)...as long as the other films are addressed.

The prequels are vital for two reasons:
a) There will be plenty of people in the Avengers audience who didn't see all (or possibly *any*) of the prequels, so you have to assume they haven't the slightest idea of those characters' story arcs, or even their skillsets or powers. So they need to be filled in.
b) OTOH, there will be plenty of people in the Avengers audience who *have* seen the prequels, and *those* audiences will remember the loose ends that still need to be tied up. I can guarantee that, if the prequels aren't addressed, there's going to be plenty of folks from Group B asking "Where's War Machine; General Ross; Jane Foster; are any of Steve Rogers' people still alive; etc."

General Ross dones't need to be address. This Hulk is another Requal. They wouldn't touch anything in the from TIH with a teen foot pole. Every thing will be vaguely referenced. War Machine is with his unit in the armed forces. Jane is the only loose end story wise.

Sort of got that with "I had a date" at the end of First Avenger.

Jane however could be mentioned or might be mentioned since Eric was enlisted to work on the Cosmic Cube there's more of a chance. (I'm curious if we'll see a follow up on that scene from Thor)

Didn't I read somewhere that Thor speaks with Jane via a mobile device or something of that nature? Maybe the still image of Thor and Coulson looking at a PC monitor is an internet linked chat with Jane as I could see Natalie Portman having the time to film a brief cameo as Jane for the Avengers. That should be good for a comic relief as I can't see Asgardians being familiar with how Earth technology works.

Maybe, I haven't seen that Jin. Tho that would be cool that Coulson would give Thor a heads up on Jane via a telecom, but I thought Nat said she wasn't in Avengers?

Ross *does* need to be addressed, moreso than any other character in TIH, because he's the reason that "they're putting together a team" in the first place. Ross was meant to be a key figure in the foundation of the Avenger Initiative; and if it follows Ultimates as closely as it seems to be doing, then Ross and Betty were actually on the C&C staff of the team.

Yeah, I considered that a slight against Jane in the first place....Fury enlists *Selvig* to work on the Cosmic Cube/Tesseract investigation, but not her? Guess 'cause she's a girl....:oldrazz:

I think it's more that She's working on getting the Bifrost Back.
Erik DOES say "Foster Theory" in that ending Credits scene and Coulson does say "You'll need your equipment to work on your Theory", so I'm guessing more or less Jane might be too busy for THOR lol

I think this was in one of the News and Rumors threads several months ago that Thor would have a chat with Jane via wireless. As far as I'm concerned it's all just a rumor and we won't know to what extent Thor has contact with Jane in the Avengers until we see the movie. I'm sure that Natalie Portman would have legitimate reasons for not being in this movie, like the always busy, energy sapping yet rewarding job of raising an infant child during their developmental years. I'm sure we can give her a pass on that one.

Well I guess they COULD use footage from Thor for Jane Foster. I mean if you watch Thor with the commentary that last scene where Thor is asking Heimdal about Jane and they Show Erik, Jane and Darcy at Smith Motors, That whole scene was supposed to be at the very beginning of Thor before they even went out "storm" chasing.

This is just speculation but there could be some cut footage from Thor that they can edit to look like a conference call from Jane. Technically that would not require any direct participation from Natalie just maybe her formal permission to do it maybe?

That's what I'm saying. If there's footage of a conversation between the two that we haven't seen, it probably could be used that way.
Then all they REALLY need is Nat's voice, Heck she could CALL her lines in lol.
13th Warrior had something like that happen. The scene where they go see that old witch. The Actress for that part had gone home and couldn't make it back and they needed her to rework the last sentence she says to Bulvi and they had her call the lines in. lol

You know, I could actually see Natalie sitting in front of her computer at home in real life on a Video Conference program recording her bit as Jane talking with Thor getting him caught up on what's been going on with her in the past 3 years, that's how casual and organic I think the scene should be.

JANE: Thor, let me hold up my new baby so you can see. While you were gone, I had him with a French ballet dancer.

THOR:

COULSON: Wow, that girl really has no clear "type," does she?

Wow! Has it been 3 years since the events in thor? I did not know that.

Was there any other reason besides thor is a bada$$, when in the thor movie, coulson asked selvig to keep thor out of the bars?

Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be getting any cameo from Portman. It just seems like they're going with Selvig as the link between the movies. Jane will have to wait until Thor 2 (hopefully she'll be a part of that).

Assuming she's not in it, I am curious how they will address the ending of Thor and his return. Seems like an open item they'd need to at least acknowledge.

Selvig said before to Coulson "He's a wonderful man, a man in pain". As German I don't know the correct translation but the in the dubbing it was translated with "He has his problems" I always thought that Selvig means he has a drinking problem. Would make sense.

Any other ideas?

She's in it. She was among the the only three stars that Marvel Studios officially confirmed to be returning for Thor 2, alongside Chris and Tom.

I'm surprised that hasn't been addressed yet.

2 years is a lot of time. If the events of "The Avengers" had taken place only weeks after the events of "Thor", then I could see it being more of an issue. But given the amount of time that's past, they could just say that Jane is busy doing something else.

Plus, I think Marvel wants to save their on screen reunion for Thor's film where it'll have more time to be emphasized on.

I wanna see the reunion in Thor2, not in Avengers. But I hope Jane will be mentioned. Perhaps Thor returnes from somewhere telling he met Jane. I mean he can fly. Why shouldn't he visit her when the times allows it?
