all right... talked about this for about 2 days now with my girlfriend, we are big fans and have been buying every mag and reading every article and reading all these post every day! That being said, we would hope that our age group and our level of artistic snobbery would be the target audience for this movie...
but painstakingly it is seemingly not. There is something i think that alot of the people in this particular thread do NOT understand. It is a quote by Mark Twain... one of the best quotes of his ever. (IMO) "To write fiction you must first have a great understanding of fact" (or something to that extint). The reason i like that quote is because of how true it is. I call it the XXX vs. the MATRIX theory. In the matrix you have a lot of far fetched feats being performed. Freezing in air kicks, bullet dodging, running on walls... and as silly as those things were they were established in a realm of fact first, then presented.
Why could NEO fly? Run up walls? etc??? Cause he was part of a mental video game that he could control as long as he knew the moves and was strong with the force (HAHAHA)!!! Basically it was all explained first.
Now lets go to XXX or as i call it "the worse action movie of all time"! This movie completely ignored this lil fact. It wasnt suppose to be "real". So who cares, right? He can ride a motorcycle on a roof of a hay barn while a helicopter fires 180 (or so) cal. bullets into the hay and wood causing a NAPALM (sp? its late) EXPLOSION! Sure.... that makes sense! Why the hell not? Movie watchers dont like to think... they wont put together the massive holes in that.
Go back to HULK or to F4. Now i know that Avi Arad says that he thinks the HULK was a flop do to the "dark elements" and complexity of plot, and it wasnt enough of a "POP CORN FLICK, which is what hulk fans want to see", but that was not it at all. The reason hulk flopped is cause they FRACKED up the "popcorn"! The movies depth, and complexities were awesome! What was missing was the FACT BEHIND THE FICTION in the POPCORN scenes. Think about it... what about him and his dad would make FACE IMPRINTS IN CLOUDS? Where is the backing for that? Or for the stupid animals? What about F4? Great depth... character development etc... what did it flop on? The "Popcorn" scenes. The mindless fights. The fight between fantastic and the thing was more interesting then that of the team and doom!
Marvel is ****ing this up big... hollywood is in general with all the movies about superheroes. (except spiderman) They seem to think the "Movies arent made to be taken seriously... so why bother?" And they get away with it from reasons like the average ticket buyer. Those that say "Triple X was awesome! And i loved FAST AND THE FURIOUS!" LOTR had a big chance to flop... do did MATRIX so did X2. But those movies all had something in common.... I respect for science in the fictional fighting scenes. That is what made bryan singer so freaking amazing. His realism approach to the most ridiculously hard stories to keep real. But he saw... "focus on evolution and you have a means of truth, then go to how the world will react and make sure you capture that. Then make sure the fights look real! Grab the audience." Hence we get the white house reaction to an INTRUDER (best cinematic scene of all time if you dont count the NO CUTS SCENE of the hammer fight in OLDBOY) Hence you got the COP SHOOTING LOGAN, the kids getting attacked that the mansion. You have all these elements that made sense.
You know what doesnt make sense? A sentinel in the danger room.
You know what doesnt make sense? Logan being thrown slowly and straight
You know what doesnt make sense? A sentinel head falling 100 feet and logan holding on to it, no problem and out of site, only to hit the ground and walk out from around it perfectly standing rightward shaking his hands. (he should have had some legs in the air as he held on for dear life as the head fell off. And then he should have fell on his ass once the head hit the ground... and it should never had been a sentinel)
you know what else doesnt make sense? 220 million dollar movie and we havent seen **** on it yet that validates the cost. NOTHING.
I am not saying that brett ratner wont build character depth... or he wont make a watchable movie... i am saying the battles (which this movie is seemingly one giant battle) are going to be campy as hell.
and this is sooo hard for me to say. cause i hate negativity, and i love my xmen. but unless this is the only STUPID clip in the whole movie.... then i feel that fox just took bets on people like us going to see this movie REGUARDLESS, so what was the point.
sorry guys.
flame on.
