really? I found Famke's Jean Grey unfortunately always very shallow and boring. Of course this was also fault of the screenplay but Famke never made the character interesting or gave her any depth. (something Ellen Page for example was able to do with 2 lines of dialogue for Kitty Pryde...). Famke never feels like a technically well-versed actress to be me. More like model turned actress...

I prefer Sophie's take on Jean Grey to be honest. She was fantastic, very complex and the new breakout character of the series for me! They shouldn't risk losing her!

I personally don't have a problem with 50 year old actress playing Jean Grey or Storm. But I have a problem as soon as an actress or actor is transforming her/his face into a stiff emotional-less mask because of ageism in Hollywood that make many people believe they need to look like they are still 25. I am a little bit afraid Famke lost her facial expressions a long time ago because of cosmetic surgery and botox...

They should risk losing her if the movies set in the past keep underperforming. Fox should NOT wait for the next one to underperform again.

Anyway, I'm not gonna talk about Famke's face like you did, it sounded like you are just shading her (if Ruth sees that post lol). But the films being set in the present would also open the possibility for characters like Iceman, Rogue, Kitty, Colossus, Gambit to take over the place of Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean, Prof X, Beast and Storm one day (four of those six aren't even alive in the 616 timeline anymore). Then you could also have the likes of Angel, Psylocke, Polaris, Cannonball, Dazzler joining the team and appearing as X-Men in multiple films. In the past, they are boxing themselves with the younger versions and the 90s setting and if they dare move to the present with the younger cast, its just gonna be another ridiculous continuity error.

Thing about some of your logic really is that whose to say that will appeal to a much larger audience? you assume it would based on oh it's the present day and that its what you personally want to see at the moment.

I personally favor doing more movies in the past, personally. With respect to box office, I don't personally own shares in Fox, and I am not a producer on these movies myself. If the budgets are trimmed, then mid-500 range and potentially better with a more intriguing premise, stronger reviews and word of mouth, and flourishes that bring novelty might be manageable with respect to business.

Deadline estimated that Godzilla made 1.12 dollars for every dollar they spend on Godzilla. It had a 160M budget and 529M WW gross, though more domestic which brings in better profits. In contrast, DOFP made 747.8M with a 225M budget but the participations (in part due to the old cast) trimmed the profits to Fox. So, they got 1.13 dollars for every dollar they spent.

If business if viable, I think it's okay not to bring in bigger numbers. The Last Stand has the highest domestic box office of any X-Men movie, but I am not especially invested in seeing movies that I have mixed or negative feelings towards perform well at the box office. I also think artistic vitality matters to long term health of the franchise, and there is potential to tell good stories with this younger cast.

Lest you all think the original team guarantees DOFP or better numbers, I would remind you that the sequels besides BvS, Civil War, and Dory all declined, most with the same team. And Jackman says he's out. Research has also established that reviews influence the holds/legs of a movie's box office.

Kinda ironic that Deadpool's box office poll had an upper limit of $600 million as an option and it's going to end up grossing over $780 million while this poll has a lower limit of $600 and it's not going to come close to it.

I would've loved to have seen how this movie could do in China without Warcraft cutting it's legs. Even then, it remained pretty strong.

I don't think using time travel with the younger cast to change the setting is a good idea. It makes things even more convoluted and it makes time travel into a handy trick to be used a lot, when it is best to use sparingly.

I find it very random that this movie flopped so hard in the United States after "Deadpool" and "Days of Future Past" have been huge successes.

Would love to read a good (!) analysis what could be the reason for audiences to suddenly stay away.

Well yeah that kind of goes hand in hand essentially. If it was well reviewed and people enjoyed it word of mouth would be better. But to be honest generally audiences liked this movie. They thought it was pretty regular. Most people give it a 7-7.5 overall. It's just a middle of the pack kind of flick. Which isn't that bad. People just expect more from X-Men movies.

Well yeah that kind of goes hand in hand essentially. If it was well reviewed and people enjoyed it word of mouth would be better. But to be honest generally audiences liked this movie. They thought it was pretty regular. Most people give it a 7-7.5 overall. It's just a middle of the pack kind of flick. Which isn't that bad. People just expect more from X-Men movies.

Well it's held/holding much better than the likes of TMNT (which I also enjoyed a lot) and Warcraft. Despite coming out earlier and currently having less screens.

For me X-Men Apocalypse is the best X-Men universe movie ever made. It had almost everything that I wanted to see. Is not a perfect movie but is just the best x-men universe movie ever made cause all x-men universe movies has its own flaws.

They will be in their mid 20s by the time the next one is filmed. They are less young and now in their prime. It will go over better than bringing back a cast in their 50s, especially sans Jackman. This is a new opportunity to do something new. Repeating yourself again and again leads to diminishing results, as we saw last month.
