Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

You're stating this as a matter of fact? Clearly some people (including the writer of that article) disagree.
No he’s not. Do you need to write “in my opinion” in every post you make? I didn’t think so.

I agree with the whole 'Mystique situation'. I've never liked the character and actress in these prequel films, except the very young Mystique played by Morgan Lily at the start of First Class.

It's clear the studio wanted her back for Dark Phoenix and that she put her foot down regarding make-up/face-time. Fox's thinking is so dated and has just led to Mystique becoming the new Wolverine, except JLaw is an ungrateful spoiled brat.

Even Mystique's fate in this feels phoney and attention-seeking. Like, GTFO of these films already.

They would have been better writing her out and doing a spin-off. I know they already tried to turn the blue Raven into the Red Sparrow but that bombed, showing that JLaw really has no box office pulling power on her own.

This is one aspect I hope the MCU gets right. Surely they can't do Mystique any worse than this travesty we've had from JLaw.

Aside from Jeremy conrads expected negativity to anything non-MCU, Im glad others that attended have had a good reaction to the footage

If you want a tribute to the Hellfire Club, bring back January Jones.
You want them to bring back one of the weakest aspects of First Class?

It's fair.
At the same time i will never tire of complaining about how much Disney is the ruin not only of Marvel characters but even of cinema itself.
Cool but how is that on-topic? At least try to fake it like others here who in response to complaints about Dark Phoenix—the topic of this thread—deflect to the MCU instead.

Sophie Turner on Dark phoenix

I think what I loved was the fact that, from a female standpoint, some of the most powerful characters in this movie are women. The lead of the movie is a female and she's not only the protagonist but also the antagonist. I loved the concept of that, so that really excited me.

What Sophie Turner Loved Most About The Dark Phoenix Script

I love January as Emma, she is amazing in Mad Men

I thought she got too much criticism for FC. Ms. Jones was also quite good in The Last Man on Earth, so it's not like she can't act. I think Vaughn deserves at least some of the blame for her somewhat wooden performance.

the aging process is definitely one of the bigger problems I have with these recent films

all the kids from the last movie look exactly the same when 10 years is supposed to have passed, should have just cast actors who look a little older honestly, not even gonna get started on the First Class crew who have looked the same since the mid 60s.... and I ain't buying any of that "maybe all mutants age slower" stuff lol.

but I am glad to hear the positive response to the footage. Definitely could use any good word of mouth it gets at this point.

In comics Scott, Jean, Bobby, Hank and Warren are the same in '60 as they are now.

I'm talking about Charles, Erik, Hank and Raven looking exactly the same for the last 30 years in the franchise timeline

comics are easier to get away with because the concept of time is looser and there are countless reimagined examples of the overall universe, movies are a little more difficult sell on something like that

Sheridan is completely miscast as Scott. I don't understand why Singer didn't go for an Ansel Elgort type when casting young Scott. What we have now is the equivalent of someone like Dane Dehaan playing Captain America.

The other X-Men are relatively well-cast

I have mixed feelings on the casting. They look like the characters - aside from height differences (Kodi is really tall, Alexandra is short). So they feel reasonably well chosen. But none of them are really cast to be leads with big screen presence, so it's clear they were never intended to be such. That tells you that Fox never really wanted the X-Men front and centre.

So it leaves me wondering what would have happened if the X-Men had stayed with Fox. There would be no Mystique, probably no Jean/Phoenix, and possibly no Xavier or Magneto at the forefront. Would they consider doing other films based around the remaining cast of Beast, Storm, Nightcrawler, Cyclops? I doubt it. They already wrote out Angel, Jubilee and Psylocke, along with Emma Frost, Banshee and Havok.

So they would need to bring in others, including lead actors/characters. Maybe a bigger name as Sinister or something? I don't see how Fox could have proceeded beyond Dark Phoenix with the cast they would have had left.

FOX have done what they always do. they cast potential up and comers. none of the FC cast were well known back in 2011 (except kevin bacon). yes people talk about fassbender, mcavoy and Lawrence but no one really knew them back then. it was the direction their careers went after that movie that helped increase them into being more known. although i don't think that means they were not gonna make a sequel to FC just because of that.

Tye Sheridan for example did apocalypse and then was the lead in Ready Player One.

For the most part did people know who hugh jackman was back in 2000? everyone knew Patrick Stewart. maybe McKellen perhaps. berry... well... she was in the Flintstones movie?

Dark Phoenix IPA? Haha. How times have changed since the X3 Slurpee cups.

If the buyout didn’t happen, and they still lost Sophie (inevitable from her Dark Phoenix role), Mystique (fate from the trailers, “I put my foot down” and “I’d rather be in Guardians), Kinberg would’ve thrown money towards Fassy, ditto McAvoy and Hoult and he probably would include a near-40-year old Gambit.

Of course there’s always the chance that Dark Phoenix is F4 bad that Fox has no choice but to 100% reboot. Or they sit the IP out for a few years and do spin-offs.

Kinberg on Selene:
One of the characters is based on a character from the comic, and the other character is sort of an amalgam of different characters from the comic and inspired by different characters. The one that’s from the comic is Selene, which is a little bit of a nod to the Hellfire Club. It’s obviously a huge part of the original Dark Phoenix Saga in the comics, and it’s not something we really explore in this film. I wanted to have something that would at least be an homage to that, and it’s also a character I always thought was cool and cool-looking.
Kinberg picked Selene because it’s a cool and cool-looking character. And so the first thing he does is to make the character look virtually unrecognizable to her comic counterpart. An -ino. Good job Kinby!

Sounds like the same rationale for Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse.

She looks exactly like "Arclight" in X3...

Sounds like the same rationale for Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse.

The rationale for Psylocke being in Apocalypse was the worst I've heard for any character. Singer said...

"The sexual component, because cult leaders tend to sexualize their position and have sex with half the people in their cult. And the Psylocke character, who was a very bright character in the comic but is always looking for guidance and leadership, always trying to find the right guy, so she ends up with Apocalypse in this one.”

Horrible. Brings, the "cool looking comment" up quite a bit. Isn't Selene just a replacement for Psylocke here cause Munn said no?

Yeah, that was Singer not at his brightest.

And didn't they say they only included her

1) Because they realized they were a Horseman short after Xavier gets kidnapped, and

2) Because they googled Horsemen and found out she was a Horseman once and she was cool looking.

Honestly I'm not the biggest fan of the Deadpool movies but she might have been better served in those.
