Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

"They're working as a team for the first time, really, that we've seen in these films."
Dark Phoenix Writer/ Director/Producer Simon Kinberg

I guess two decades into the series is better than never.

That's not entirely true either. There was First Class... Which is the only team film not written by him and/or directed by Bryan Singer. It also was mostly C-listers, but they felt like the X-Men. I suppose the future scenes in DOFP kind of count, but Apocalypse really dropped the ball in this regard save strangely when the kids bust Wolverine out, then back to normal.

While not perfect casting, I actually liked Halle and think she gets a really bad rap. She did fine with what she was given.

It’s not her fault she wasn’t given a larger role.

Meh, this is revisionist history. You can blame the filmmakers for miscasting Storm in the first place, but Halle was always a lousy Storm. First a bad accent and then no accent in the sequels and she phoned it in with all the sequels. You can tell when she's trying (Monster's Ball for instance) and when she's not (X2, X3, the Bond movie she did, etc.)

I know it's fashionable around here to bash the new kids all the time, but Alexandria while given nothing to do in Apocalypse actually was more convincing as a teenage version of Storm than Halle ever was. It's a shame she'll again apparently be furniture in this.

Those toppers are...unique. Though it does seem like they're trying to attract the Pop! collectors crowd with that one.

I'd probably pick up the Cyclops one if they're cheap. Wonder what happened to the other toppers that were more anatomically correct. Same ones posted here before. These are CinemaCon so these are US (those were also US).

A bit of behind the scenes footage from ET.

I actually caught this on TV and I thought I missed a lot of the X-men feature. Was that really it for the Dark Phoenix talk on that clip? LOL X-men is merely a foot-note to a GOT story.

I agree that the FC crew felt X-Meny after they put on their slick jumpsuits, even if the team make up was somewhat non traditional. But the momentum depleting decade jumps has been a real killer to developing any team cohesion, regardless of whether or not there were any onscreen battlefield coordination. They really should have stayed in the 60s..

They weren't even X-men. Moira came up with that name in the waning seconds of that movie, no matter how Mystique tried to retcon that to say she and her cohorts came up with the name at the CIA building.

They worked together as a team by the end of the first X-Men. Which is part of the point of the movie. I got that same feeling in the end fight of Apocalypse as well, but that's just me. I'm fully aware that I'm alone in that department.

Kinberg's nothing if not good at PR.

If you watched that linked Collider video and you knew nothing about Kinberg the writer, you would probably think he's the best writer in the world.

Oy, semantics. Whatever, I agree they mostly squandered that potential, but I don't think anyone watching it didn't consider them X-Men. That's like saying the Avengers aren't Avengers in the first movie, because they don't come up with the name until the end.

Well I mean Fury's been talking about the Avenger Initiative since at least Iron Man. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Comparing Shipp to Lawrence is moronic. I'm not much of a fan of JLaw-Mystique either, and her comments about wanting to be in Guardians instead were likewise ultra stupid and classless.

Thing is, Lawrence was still headlining the biggest doofusy-but-monster-money tween franchise out there at the time. Lawrence could throw some weight around even a few years back, people knew who she was. Shipp? The general audience watching these things don't know who the hell Shipp is, first time they saw her face was Apocalypse. Getting all demanding at that point in your career is pretty lame. Just go do some smaller indie stuff to get your "artist" fix while getting your money & adding-to-your-profile stuff from X-Men.

Turning it into a representation thing is stupid. Cyclops has got the shaft since the start, last time I checked...that's a white dude. And Marsden while not much of a "name" circa 2000 either had probbably been in far more stuff than she has so far.

Agree to disagree. I thought Halle did fine in those 2 X-men films, especially X2. I’ll give you the accent though, and I’m glad it was dropped.

I think Shipp has done just fine with the small amount she’s been given.

You can disagree with posts without calling them moronic. You would think someone who's been here for 6 years would know that by now.

How did Singer and Kinberg listening to JLaw churn out? We got compromised storylines where Mystique--in the safety of the X-mansion--is walking around as a blonde white girl, where we got Mystique in a laughably bad blue face shiny make-up and a matted body suit.

What did giving in to her demands give us? We got another bored performance from Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence. We got a lower domestic Box Office take than a movie from 16 years prior, unadjusted for inflation!

Perhaps Singer really should have just given JLaw her other wish: Not to be in this franchise any more. It would've certainly been a win-win for everybody.

Instead Kinberg, the genius that he is, throws more money her way. He's said in the past he would never do an X-men movie without his FC trio.

So it's not a representation thing but a star wattage thing? Got it!

I'm so glad this way of thinking is almost over. I can't rid of this woman fast enough!

Did anyone "listen" to Lawrence? They put her more front-and-center as a character once Lawrence came onto the role, capitalizing on the popularity with the kiddies, but I doubt she had any say over storyline.

That's just a "we're doing the young X-Men, Lawrence is our big-name among the kiddy cast, Mystique's getting a lot to do" thing.

Yes they've had to write around her "putting my foot down" demands so she appears as herself without having to wake up extra early to sit thru hours of make-up. For her final movie, they've greatly reduced even her Mystique make-up. They're also killing her off. You should go watch the movies, and do research on the brat you are defending.

apparently the final trailer will be released later this month (before avengers)
may seem fast but I think due to the delay in marketing because of the merger, now they are moving things forward
I do not know if it's true, but rumored to have a tribute prepared for the old cast.

probably they will release the last trailer before avengers and in May or early June should release some scene from the film.

Is there a valid source for that? all i can find is Serje boasting about knowing stuff before anyone else all over twitter.

It makes sense i suppose that if you could put it with any movie. why not endgame?

about the tribute to the old cast I saw in the twiter of the serje, I did not take him seriously but he hit everything lately, including details of the second trailer and what would or would not be shown
apparently he has a good source.

but about the launch before avengers, I saw in another twiter that at the moment I do not remember, but it makes sense, since the marketing of the film is "delayed" by the merger, now they want to take advantage of the best opportunities

I hope they actually assume the marketing of "farewell or end" is the best thing to do
after all probably we will only see the x-men team reunited again in at least 4 years.
if it's the end of the franchise they need to assume that and use it in favor of the movie, as they did with logan.

Well serje claims there are 2 trailers, one has a tribute to the other 6 x-men movies at the beginning and the other one doesn't. they haven't decided which one they are going for yet (apparently)

The previous films tribute one does sound abit like that endgame trailer where they had clips of previous movies to make it seem like a culmination event.

if it's true
I think the final trailer displayed that will be aired before avengers, should the normal version (showing more of the movie)
and on the opening day of the pre sale of the tickets he should release the one that appears the tribute to the old cast to show the public that this is an end
That would be something smart.

I find the persons tweets hard to read, BUT they definitely have a source telling them things. They’ve been right about the second and international trailers, to the point of knowing storm’s lines even before the trailer hit.

So going by that then, I kinda hope they go for the farewell tribute trailer. Really don’t wanna see anymore footage. The other trailer they describe is like waaay tooo much.
