Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

In future news from a few years time: Kinberg approaches Feige with plans to tell the Dark Phoenix story a third time.

"I've learnt from my mistakes the previous 2 times. It's my life's work. It's the only story I know. I'm confident I can do it justice this time round. Everyone deserves a third chance."

:o

"It clearly is a movie that didn't connect with audiences that didn't see it, it didn't connect enough with audiences that did see it. So that's on me," Kinberg said during an interview with KCRW's The Business. However, the director did add that it wasn't painful for him to reflect on the film so soon after its poor opening weekend because he genuinely likes the movie. "I loved making the movie, and I loved the people I made the movie with," he said.

"I love these characters. I love these world. I'll be super excited to see what Marvel does with them."

Well, at the very least the guy is humble and is taking it all on the chin. Very classy response. He's not lashing out or blaming people he's at least saying "I screwed up." And that's why he will keep getting work, studios love team players like this.

I at least appreciate that. Joel Schumacher did the same thing with Batman & Robin. On the other hand we have guys like Josh Trank and Zack Snyder complaining that they were screwed by the studio and/or the audience was too stupid to understand the complexities of their films.

Ron Howard just recently blamed internet trolls for Solo failing.

Just bought my ticket for discount Tuesday at my theater.

Only six bucks but anyway the first X-Men film came out when I was 11 and I am now 30.

I honestly wasn’t planning on seeing this but good and bad this franchise has been with me for 20 years and I’ve seen every film in the series and I just have to see how the core X-Men films end before the Reboot.

In 2014 Kinberg said there were many things about X3 he regretted and he regretted where the film ended up. He blames it mostly on the culture of the time.

Writer-Producer Simon Kinberg on 'X-Men: Days Of Future Past' and Tearing Down 'The Last Stand'

DoFP deliberately erased events of X3.

X3 is widely considered one of the worst XMen films. I dont know anyone in my life outside of these forums that actually likes the film. When discussing XMen films it always comes up as "that really bad one".

When I criticized the new film's trailers for looking too much like X3 defenders here said that the "general audience wouldn't remember X3". :woo:

But yea I guess that is a false narrative because these are all normal reactions to successful film that worked.

It didn't work.

They retconned major parts of it in DOFP. The guy who co wrote it just tried to do a do over. The film, along with X-Men Origins, damaged the film brand for a time.

It didn't work. There's no false narrative there.

Yeah, Kinberg said he regretted but he also said that general audiences liked the film. There isn’t really much evidence to suggest that it damage the brand. It has an A- on cinemascore.

"People need to stop pushing the false narrative that X3 didn’t work."

Holy s***, man :o

I mean it was liked among general audiences.

I don't know if I'd believe Kinberg's claims that this was supposed to be a two parter but I do believe that Fox selling to Disney undoubtedly ****ed any chance of telling the story they wanted to tell originally.

The Phoenix story is done but good thing that Jean is much bigger than that storyline. There's plenty of stories to tell to include Jean without that aspect.

Well there is Olivia Munn’s statement from 2017 saying it was a two-parter.

To be fair to Josh Trank, he does accept part of the blame nowadays.

The HR article is an image wash for Kinberg.Subliminally names the problems of production, Singer.....,
HR are friends of Fox and Kinberg. :)

The Last Jedi dropped 90% in China as well. So I doubt RT had anything to do with it.

Box Office: 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' Plunges Record 83% On Friday

I don’t mean to pick on this one (it is better than X-Men: Apocalypse or X-Men Origins: Wolverine), but there is something galling about watching producers make seemingly every wrong decision and then act flabbergasted at the result. They remade a story that no one really wanted to see remade, they gave us less fantasy and less razzle-dazzle, they focused on the men rather than the title character and they overspent on reshoots to make a “different doesn’t equal better” final product. In a world where theatrical moviegoing is in a mortal struggle for survival, the industry just can’t afford movies like Dark Phoenix.

I’m pretty sure a lot of fans wanted to see a storyline with the Shi’Ar and things of that nature. Just like they wanted to see a redo of Deadpool’s origin.

China is simply not Star Wars country. They just never grew up on that. They, however, love comic book movies, especially Marvel. In fact most of Asia (China, Korea, India, The Philippines) does. And that loyalty extends towards the X-men. We love our Marvel movies, and that love mostly started with The Animated Series.

Except for this one apparently. No one loves this movie. It would be one thing if it did terrible numbers in North America but blew up in other countries (see: Alita, Pacific Rim), but this movie is doing embarrassingly low numbers across the world.

Maybe on his third try, Kinberg will be the exception.

My point is that RT has no effect on Chinese audiences. The Transformers films normally do very well.

The audience would’ve been completely fine with a story that just focused on the X-Men doing missions. The start of the movie was fantastic with the space mission. They didn’t need to rush this dark Phoenix storyline seeing as how we only had one bad movie with this younger cast. They needed a good movie in between to make the audiences care about the young Scott, Jean, Storm and Kurt. That’s where they failed. If they kept this smaller scale. Maybe something more simpler like First Class this would have been received better.

I agree with you. And to the filmmakers credit this wasn’t exactly the story that they greenlit.

How ironic that the Dark Phoenix storyline got butchered twice. Singer originally wanted to shoot X3/X4 back to back with Jean going dark in the later movie, that got scrapped which led to a disappointing TLS. Now here we are again finding out that Kinberg planned to do two movies include certain story elements and the studio screwed the Phoenix story again by selling to Disney (thank God) during mid/post production which led to (another) disappointing telling of the Dark Phoenix. Sounds like to me FoX never had faith that this particular storyline could do well if given the proper time allowed to tell the story and hire good writers and directors. This could have been there “Infinity War/Endgame” box office movie but they keep screwing it up. At this point I’m so Phoenix-ed out I don’t wanna see it in the MCU! It’s been done to 4x (X2, TLS, Apocalypse, DP) with no gravitas.

Well we aren’t exactly founding out now. Olivia Munn revealed the two parter thing back in 2017. And it was scrapped in late pre-production before Disney thought about buying the studio.

But yeah, I utterly lost faith in Fox in Phoenix after founding out what went on with the production of the film.

What evidence do people have that a back-to-back shot, two-parter Dark Phoenix movies was anything more than an idea that was floated but was never actually seriously considered? Why would Fox commit something so massive to a franchise that was already seeing diminishing returns?

And if we are to believe what we’ve been told here, supposedly the New York set (Central Park?) and the UN set were the third acts of two different movies? Why would Kinberg shoot those two now?

Actually don’t answer that. This is the same filmmaker that didn’t plan schedules for reshoots.

Yeah, considering FOX's history and how conservative their approach was with the X-Men, I find very hard to believe FOX would take a big risk like that with a 2 part movie. Especially after XMA's performance.

Logan made more money than Apocalypse which came several months after that film. Probably would have made much even more money if it wasn’t for Kong and Beauty & The Beast cutting into its Box Office. So it’s easy see why they thought this would work.

Didn’t @icekid already explained the other stuff?

Because Logan was the last X-Men movie before this, not Apocalypse. That movie performed pretty well.
