Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

It's a pretty good twist that Beast seems to be joining Magneto considering their history. I hope Beast is the only one to take that side from the X-men, and that appears to be the case. I really want to see Xavier, Cyclops, Storm, and Nightcrawler solidly on team Jean. I love how unified they seemed in the trailer.

I really wish Storm had a line. I think her hair looks great on *this* version of the character.

Question: Why is everyone always so fixated on Storm's hair? I feel like it's been something or other about her hair for 10 years on here.

Sounds like a very vague, wishy-washy "non-answer."

MUNN: I don’t know what I’m supposed to say. I’m supposed to be vague. That’s my answer. I’m horrible at that. It’s like a two parter, this movie. That’s more than I’ve said, in general. I don’t know why people have to be so secretive.

She could just have said no, if she is not indeed in the movie... anyhoo, it's not like she was getting any pivotal role anyway,

She has a history of bad wigs, but Storm's hair is a... complicated subject.

She's barely even a character in Apocalypse. She has maybe what? 3 lines. I think this is the entirety of her speaking lines in the film:

Yep. I didn't dislike her in Apocalypse, I think she was cool, but a little wasted, indeed.

Probably she was just trying to promote herself and create buzz about the character.

I'd rather have added Psylocke, though, instead of that Selene girl or Red Lotus.

Watched the trailer quite a few times and have mixed feelings. I almost feel bipolar towards it lol. I’m still excited because I just love the X-Men but there are definitely some things that really make me mad.

The good…it looks like Cyclops will finally get to do something. So deserved after how horribly his character has been treated. I hope we finally get to see moments of him acting as a leader and the focus is on his relationship with Jean. The film seems really intense and dramatic which I do love about Fox’s universe. The VFX also look really great from the few shots we see.

The bad…
What the actual f*ck with those J-Law shots. Why can’t she just be blue the whole time?? This is the 4th film she has played the character, the audience knows its her. Plus she has a uniform now so the painting process cannot be unbearably long. Same with Beast? Nicholas Hoult isn’t even a big enough actor to be making demands like J-Law is. His face isn’t drawing in anyone. Same with them not doing simple things to show the characters have aged. I don’t know if its the cast being divas or Fox wanting to display all their stars always looking attractive. You’d think they’d realize by now with Deadpool and all the Marvel films that people don’t care if all the characters are “young” and “hot”.

Also, based on Kinberg’s new interview, has he seriously retconned the ending of Apocalypse before the movie after it is even out? I mean we already saw firebird Jean. Without her “power” Apocalypse wouldn’t have been defeated. Are we suppose to now believe that this is the first time we’re seeing her like that? So stupid if thats the case. They better show the “cosmic entity” that hits her as something that just amplifies her already fiery powers.

I also understand what people are saying about The Last Stand parallels but I don’t mind them repeating some of the same beats. They are the only beats that TLS took from the actual comic and they are good moments. I just don’t know if it was wise to lead with those similar scenes considering the films reputation with fans.

Huge shame to me. I was hoping they would give her more in this one.

They aren't even giving more to Storm and Cyclops, let alone Psylocke. This movie has less iconic characters than the previous one, and yet, they managed to put most of them in the background (poor Kurt only appears blurred in the back).

I loved the passion and the energy Munn showed in XMA. She brought the character to life showing more excitement than a certain actress who looks bored and that she is forced to be there.

There are some things I do not understand. He hates Fox, but he loves the MCU. Complaints of repeated bows, but loves Loki ...
The trailer has just been released, but they are talking about the MCU, which delivered the worst Spider-Man movie, Peter Parker as Tony Stark's Robin. No hypocrisy. If the agreement works, which is not right. The trailer for Black Phoenix is uncanny.

Red lotus, I do not know well
his powers is to give very strong punches? in the images in google he has the handle with an armor

It's clearly a mood/acting trailer, but the focus on Magneto/Xavier/Mystique isn't very enticing.

The addition of Selene and Red Lotus suggest they are making Magneto and his followers a version of the Hellfire Club. Is Selene the person who was called Luna in early casting chatter? She just looks like Arclight crossed with Psylocke.

The stubborn similarities to X3 make it difficult to get that excited. It's not going to do this film any favours.

But the Fox filmmakers seem trapped in a loop of having certain things taking place and certain characters dominating.

It mostly feels like Kinberg making the X3 he wanted to make rather than making the Phoenix story we all want and deserve.

I can't quite figure out if this is forgetting the firebird at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse or developing the idea. But given this franchise's tendencies, it's more than likely conveniently ignoring that scene at the end of X:A.

Most people's views of the trailer that I've read elsewhere (i.e., not on here) seem to be quite half-hearted or frustrated. They want something epic, not something full of compromise.

Screaming at Red Lotus and Selene being the new Quill and Arclight.

Maybe that's why they "cut" Munn's Psylocke? LOL

Red Lotus is about the worst character Claremont has created since he's come back from his first hiatus (and I actually liked his X-treme run). I suppose it's a good thing Kinberg isn't sh***ng on a good character. Even the spoiler Lip posted about Red Lotus using his braided hair as weapons (which aren't even his powers in the comics) *is* X3's Quill. Talk about being unintentionally hilarious.

One minor thing I dug in this trailer is that the women are wearing earrings, which is a thing Singer always seemed to avoid.

Though I like the idea, the execution is bad. The hoop earrings make Sophie's face look wider. Not a fan of Storm's choice of earrings either. Kinberg, you had one job :( But I'll file that under things Kinberg has butchered that the MCU can make better.

11) Earthy Tones

For years, the X-Men logo and title card has been emblasoned in bold metallic fonts – but not here. X-Men: Dark Phoenix (or simply Dark Phoenix, as it’s being called in the US) has a darker, more mellow typeface that Kinberg explains is emblematic of a new tone for the franchise. “The way I wanted to make the movie was very different than the aesthetic of previous X-Men movies, which I’ve been very involved in and proud of,” he says. “But I wanted it to feel more naturalistic, I wanted it to feel edgier, more handmade, more real. I was very inspired by what James Mangold did with Logan, and I felt like if I could bring a measure of that aesthetic in the film that all of the intergalactic and larger-scale things that happen in the movie would feel more shocking, more realistic, more emotional. They’d be grounded in some reality. And so, all of the movie – from the costumes, to the title card, to the set design, to the way the X-jet looks – all of that stuff is just more analogue in a way. More like, let’s say, the original Star Wars movies. Not that analogue, but the movies I grew up loving had this very gritty, edgy, cool, human feeling to them.”

That's so much noise lol

Logan's typeface is closer to the previous 2 Singer X-men movies than the one he chose for Dark Phoenix. Kinberg is the type of "Creative" that can talk the talk but but can't walk the walk.

Wonder what they are going to show at NYCC. If they are confident, I would go for a Logan, and show the first 20 minutes.

Wait...you actually think they have the first 20 minutes of this movie locked? Four months before its release? You probably also believed they only shot 2 weeks of reshoots.

For the vast majority of the Foxverse I've not really cared about Storm's hair, but I have to admit that one of the things that struck me in the trailer was that I didn't like her hair. I think she would suit longer hair.

Is that Lamar Johnson's new mansion recruit next to Evan Peters?

The quick shot of Chastain from the back (in the rain and following behind "Jones") gave me a momentary X-men 1 Storm vibe, and made me miss the OT.

But I suppose you can't have 2 characters having similar hairstyles in your movie and gave the bleached/longer hair to the villain instead of one of the X-men...

I wouldn't have given her that long or very straight hair. I think she would suit something shoulder length and a bit stylised.

I wonder what happens to Quicksilver, since he doesn't seem to be involved in the third act. Since he was overpowered in this franchise, I think there's probably an excuse to keep him out of the final act so doesn't resolve everything in seconds, but I still wonder what it is.

Still hope he has a decent amount of screen time. :(

I find realy funny the MCU fans. They hate everything about Fox with the justificative of being replayed. The most ironic is that ALL Marvel movies have the same formula, only the hero changes. Every movie starts with a hero at the top, then he suffers a drama, so he must prove himself worthy, a villain with the same powers appears, there is the final fight and he will return in the Avengers...

You’ve basically just described every standard hero’s journey. Marvel didn’t invent it, they just mastered it.

But it's the fox that misses making some relationships in his movies... zzZzzZzZz

One more day and more the same dramas...

The second trailer will deliver the epic scale people crave but this first trailer is necessary to show the conflict with characters.

So far all the reactions to the trailer have been postive, cautiously optimistic or lukewarm. All in all that is a good sign so far given that Dark Phoenix has risen from the ashes of Hollywood limbo.

The true test will be obviously if this film can leave a lasting impression. X1, X2, and DoFP definitely did leave that lasting impression. Apocalypse and X3 did not leave that lasting impression. First Class I have to say was and is still underrated for what it showed on the screen.

The golden gate bridge scene from X3 is great for cinema but the final act of DoFP is far more memorable as it pitted characters in a pivotal crossroads for the future outcome which was far more compelling as a theater experience.
