Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

I still don't like that they revealed this ahead of the film. I said it before and I'll say it again, they only revealed it because people constantly whine about that character. Putting her death out there is an attempt to cut down on some of the bad press.

His reasoning is sound tbf. Showing the death creates a feeling of uncertainty going forward for Jean and the others.

Problem with the idea of they did it to cut said bad press is that really... not everyone hates the character played by JLaw. And it sounds like kind of a narrow minded fan view to assume 300 loud people complaining equals a million people complaining. And usually its not those loud voices that equal the final outcome. Aka ex. Venom will flop without spiderman because no one wants it, said by 300 extremely loud voices.

Plus they wouldn't have to show she dies to accomplish that. Just don't show much of her in the trailer.

Now if she was in the trailer alot, people would be saying the opposite. That its because its JLaw that they put her in it alot. No one would be claiming they were trying to minimise her part to avoid bad press.

Its true that few people from the online community dont represent general movie going audience but looking at it from a different angle, atleast Kinberg is aware of what the internet fan community are wanting to see to an extent and as a direct consequence has given us things like Mistiques fate, Storms true power, costumes, etc

I ain't sure though that Mystiques fate would be listed under fan service though. and if so thats probably a poor reasoning to show it really.

You could do it for the sake of setting the tone for the movie, which could then potentially bring in a much wider audience... or you do it as fan service for a more minimal bunch.

Even with Storm i dunno if it was Fan service or just lets really show how powerful storm is.

yet he still butchered the look of a newly introduced character in the series, turned another character in name only, Storm still does nothing really substantial other than power displays and another Dark Phoenix film adaptation without the Shiar and the Hellfire Club. Plus the never ending Xavier/erik conflict. Yeah he listens to the fans... 2 seconds later it comes out right from his ears. What a disastrous listener to the fans.

He probably doesn't listen, he's just saying positive things, you know he is kinda the master of pr lies.

I always thought Shannon Woodward would have made a decent Kitty Pryde, she looks a lot like her but I've only seen her in The Riches and West World. Yeah how did Ellen Page save X3? lol .. I think DoFP did that and I know I sleep better certains things were reversed because of it lol

Kinberg can tease a character death without spoiling it in a trailer and then running off to a popular publication (Entertainment Weekly) and giving an interview confirming it.

Teasing the death fulfills the purpose of showing that Sophie's Dark Phoenix is dangerous. Telling people this character dies is just plain lazy and unimaginative. Two adjectives that I would use to describe a Kinberg script.

He kills an X-man to prove that this "different kind of X-men movie?" He did the same thing in X3 too...This guy's such a bad liar.

He confirmed it because it was so pathetically obvious that Mystique dies. I got that from the first little teaser, as did most of the fans, and, I'm willing to be money, Quicksilver also kicks the bucket. Because that's what Simon Kinberg considers "drama"--a character being used as death fodder. He did it in X3, he did it again in Apocalypse (Magneto having another "Bruce Wayne" moment, being given a family for the soul purpose of taking it away from him--sloppy writing), and now again.

He doesn't learn.

One of my many issues with Mystique in this film, as seen from the trailers, is why she’s the one trying to pacify Jean. I understand Kinberg wants Mystique to have some sort of role in this film version of the Dark Phoenix storyline, but I wished it was Cyclops who was trying to calm her down. I really hope Scott will have a substantial “partner/support/significant other” role for Jean in this film because so far I cannot discern that from all the footage.

I just realized we might not even get a proper Jean vs Xavier psychic battle on the astral plane. I'm hoping after Jean kills Chastain by sacrificing her last bit of humanity, Charles will face her but this is a really long shot haha.. ugh. 19 years and Charles never had a proper psychic battle, but oh well we're getting Charles in Legion season 3.

I don't understand your complaint. Magneto's family dying isn't about having a "Bruce Wayne moment". It's about providing a catalyst that informs the characters trajectory in the story, and in that case it also informs the theme of the film. It sounds like the exact same thing is happening in Dark Phoenix. Is killing Magneto's Mother in First Class also a "Bruce Wayne moment"?

What about the multiple character deaths in Logan? Is that just for the sake of drama as well?

Freaking Kinberg. I'll always remember all the smack he and Zak Penn were talking around X3's release. "No the script leak wasn't accurate (It was almost 100 percent), no Cyclop's role is worthy of the character, no phoenix was done right". They then claimed they were SO SURE that the fans would love the movie that they would come back to the forums and answer questions after the movie was released. Sure enough, movie comes out, fans hate it. Penn completely ghosts the forums and Kinberg sticks around for a couple of days, answers a few softball questions, and bails.

He’s a liar. Always has been. Even when the movie is as good as FC, DoFP or LOGAN, he still goes around the press tour lying through his teeth and just saying what he thinks people want to here.

Dark Phoenix so far is the worst of it all. Maybe cause he’s writer producer AND director and there is nobody checking him. Since day one he’s just been saying things he thinks we want to here. It’s like The Avengers. It’s like Guardians. It’s like Thor Ragnorok. It’s like LOGAN. It’s a different kind of X-Men movie! It’s cosmic! It’s grounded! It has real emotional stakes! It’s unexpected.

Yet all the trailers look like any other X-Men film. Logan really set itself apart with its trailers. THAT showed a different X-Men film.

Yep but what made Logan different is the fact it wasn't like a comic book movie. it was an R-rated grounded western movie.

I don't think Kinberg has ever said it was like guardians of the galaxy. he said he took inspiration from Ragnarok, Civil war and Logan. and he has explained what he means by that. its just when people hear it they say LOLZ its like Ragnarok?!! but no its not like ragnarok, he took inspiration from Ragnarok for certain elements. which in the long run i think its people who are reading waaaay to much into what he says, rather then what he says being a lie.

Reminds me of what they are doing with the new suicide squad. they are calling that thing a "reboot", but then apparently a fair amount of the first cast is coming back... well not much of a reboot there is it. i guess they didn't mean a literal reboot.

It's really not hard to see why Mystique is getting killed. JLaw is tired of this (she'd rather be in Guardians) and so are the fans so they're killing two birds with one stone.

Not to mention that Kinberg obviously thinks Dark Phoenix has to kill one of her teammates to demonstrate high stakes, as evidenced since The Last Stand. His lazy writing strikes again.

Well if you want to create inner conflict, then killing someone will probably create that question of what do we do? jean has over-stepped the line that she can't go back on. to do that would involve death, because you can't reverse that

In terms of the movie we got, it makes sense for her character to be struggling with what she has done and her power. she is a risk to all her friends and she has shown that.

Why elevate her to team lead in just the last film?

Mystique is a shape shifter so she really should be the easiest character to recast...

But yea so since this is a remake of TLS I guess Jean has to kill her mentor and thinking of alternatives is too much work.

Wasn't the rationale that they originally had Jackman's Wolverine as leader and had to find a replacement and decided on Raven? Maybe 'cuz Hank is too much of a wet blanket to lead, and he's not, y'know, JLaw?

Basically their desire to include Wolverine in a big way ended up taking away from Raven.

But lets be honest, am sure having audience favorite Wolverine in a role would have been a much bigger deal then having "JLaw". so the intention was probably less about doing it for "JLaw" and more about the continued stories on these characters progressing.
