Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

Wow. That's People magazine's movie editor calling it the best superhero movie of 2019.

I have a feeling this movie will appeal to the more "traditional" (those that tend to look down on blockbusters) movie reviewers given the themes (mental illness, drug addition) and the focus on Jean being a female and delving into the extreme of her mind.

I think with you more casual reviewers (like grace Randolph and other you tubers) may be a more harsh because they tend to be fans of the the source material.

That comment is probably for Far from Home.
It's probably for Dark Phoenix, but some critics (at least one from San Fransisco lol) called Apocalypse the best CBM of 2016, so some are bound to have that opinion. It's why hundreds of reviews on an aggregate site is important. It gives actual context. Although I'm not sure if a gossip mag like People is on RT.

Very good point. It's almost as if people aren't reviewing the actual movie. They're reviewing it in relation to the comic book, the animated series, the previous X-Men movies before it, etc.

Like most things, if you want this movie to be bad, you will dismiss any reviews saying it's good (it's prob for FFH, it's just a gossip mag), and focus ssolely on the ones that say it's bad. It will reinforce your already established emotional reaction. Same goes for those people wanting it to be good.
Which is why I mentioned aggregate. If critc(s) like it it will be reflected in the aggregate. If it's polarizing it will be reflected in the aggregate. If it's outright bad to the majority of reviewers it will be reflected in the aggregate. If fans like it or love it even then it will likely have strong WOM and overperform current estimates. Detached from emotions and agendas there is always a bottom line, whether we like it, agree with it or not. I know nothing about this movies quality, just giving context.

It's a believable arc.

Mutants have been accepted by the world.
The X-men are national heroes.
Xavier is the face of the X-men (and I assume mutant kind) on the world stage.
He believes that the peace they currently have can only be maintained if they X-men are successful in every mission.
Being the figure head and being constantly praised for helping bring about human-mutant peace is going to cause his ego to grow.
Pretty much the premise of X-men: Apocalypse. Mutants have supposedly been accepted by the world. Xavier is cocky.

Xavier reacts differently to it because Kinberg hasn't seen anything he's worked on in the past, let's say 13 years, so there's bound to be repeats and inconsistencies and retcons.

So now you are saying the copied his Apoclaypse arc but earlier this Dark Phoenix arc was completely out of character for this film version of Xavier? Gurl...

I can’t tell if this is shaping up to be another Godzilla with big critics hating it and public review somewhat better

Good to see some positive reaction right out of the gate. But we know what that usually means haha. I always think back to BvS being hailed as “the best evar” via early social media reactions.

*crosses fingers*

Cocky was the wrong term. Xavier was Content. Hopeful at the beginning of Apocalypse because he thinks they are finally accepted.

DPh takes and that and runs with it. An egotistical Xavier simply because the script (and a character) says he is.

In Apocalypse he is simply a head teacher of a school, not even training the X-men in combat. He was content and believed in peace.

In Dark Pheonix, he is the face of the X-men/mutants on a political stage and getting all the praise for it.

Of course the script dictates where the character is in a film (that happens in any film) but to say that it unbelievable that he could become egotistical given the context is just wrong.

IIRC, that was only by a guy on reddit who never actually saw the movie.

Did you enjoy developing the character over the last decade?

Yeah, it’s been fun playing with Charles for this long, and I really enjoyed exploring that fallibility. I’ve gotten to do him in so many different modes and stages of his life and career. From First Class to Days of Future Past, he’s unrecognizable. And then even more different in Apocalypse. This one again, he’s slightly different, he’s more like he was in First Class, but with a huge platform; he’s a public figure. Getting to flex different muscles as an actor is cool. And it really doesn’t feel like I’ve been playing the same person. It feels like he’s been slightly different people each time. Partly it’s the fact that even though we’re only aging a year or two between each movie, each film has about 10 years between it, which means that you can take big leaps and show what has happened with them in the intervening narrative. Generally, in between each film, something vastly different is going on with each character.

Feeling a mixed reaction from this one. But judging from the profile she is a comic reader.

Wow Kinberg strikes again. The expert agile wielder of filmcraft and writing is so skilled to have proven so many wrong with his directorial debut. The X-women line is particularly chilling, striking like a knife through the tension and in keeping with the times. The action tense, dialog razor sharp, and the tweet reactions are amazing. He is highly accurate and uses precision engineering to render his amazing production on display. Kinberg IS the one to carry this forward. How can it be that Feige will not want to attract him to his nest?

it will be probably same as apocalypse or higher on RT.

Apocalypse 47% / 5.66
