Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

A nice, fair assessment of the film from 2 people I actually care about over at Collider. Lack of emotional response, but nice comic book imagery and great performances. Better than Apocalypse. 6/10 from both of them.

What makes it fair?

This actually reminded me of his BvS score which I didn't care for.
Thinking about it, outside of the Wonder Woman theme and the call backs to MoS (which I love the score for), I can't remember much new in that movie, outside of the torture that is Batman's theme.

Beyond the Dark Knight films, ASM2 is my favorite score of his. From the 10 minute sample's of DP, I've loved every minute. I'm curious as to how its even remotely misused in the film, if it is. Seems like an impossible feat, haha. Particularly because of the overall positive response on the music in particular. Hmm.

I am seeing praise for Sophie Turner. Which considering what she has been through, great for her. She apparently put a lot of work into this. But I get the really annoying feeling she is going to still somehow be blamed for all of this.

Honestly starting to think DOFP was a fluke and the only reason Logan was so good because it was Jackman's final round as Wolverine so he kinda had to put his all into it. But I think Hugh has phoned in a couple of performances as Wolverine before.

Logan was for all intents and purposes a standalone film. And so was Deadpool. THey didn't work in or around these movies at all. They did their own thing.

When she was cast in Apocalypse, I had high hopes for this iteration of Jean.

But with Kinberg's writing she was barely given a character to play, and I expect the same this time around.

Well, Logan is great for many reasons beyond Hugh. The Wolverine was good too, aside from a clunky third act, the seeds were there. I cant think of a time when Hugh phoned in Wolverine. He's consistently the best part of the worst movies haha. He IS Wolverine.

This is basically where we're at now. ****ing X-Men Judgement Day:

It's good to finally have something to chew on. No more hypotheticals. No more "Why are you so negative? I'm giving him a chance, why can't you?" No more "He only wrote those scripts, he didn't direct them."

I'm seeing this Tuesday (if I can find a theatre that plays it). Let's see if the family still wants to go.

I will give Sophie Turner this. She tries.

Tye Sheridan, I mean he's there I guess. I never really fell in love with his Cyclops. He barely interacts or has relationships with anyone other than Jean. He never really takes command of the field and becomes a leader.

It's not impossible. Chris Evans did it as Steve Rogers. He became a very well rounded character.

It seems that this is the 2nd time that the actress playing jean grey is doing the best she can for this story and is getting screwed by everything else!

One major problem for the X-Men franchise is that outside of Wolverine, it was rarely about the X-Men team. It was about the eternal clash between Charles and Eric. Which is fine in theory, but there is only so many ways you can try and work that and leave everyone else just... there. Like how do you go 7 movies and never really flesh out Jean, Scott, Storm, Beast, etc.

Even in a movie with Wolverine, I never felt like these characters really came into their own.

X3 and Wolveirne origins come to mind. Here's a ? would Logan have been so good if Wolveine was alive at the end? Or did his death add gravitas to a film that may have been some what average until the characters death?

I don't think there's a story or ending in that movie without Logan dying. He had to die for that story.

She has opened up about the abuse she has taken online, and how that has effected her. I just hope she is in a good place to deal with what ever vile crap comes her way. And no Vile, that wasn't an intention pun.

I say this with all sincerity. I can really see her trying with this role and trying to do it justice. To me the faults of the movie are not truly with her. I think with the right director and script, she could've been a fantastic Jean Grey. If not fantastic, a very good one for this story.

Stuckmanns review didn't even mention the other characters and Jeremy Jahns says Nightcrawler acts vicious? Sigh..

I’m seeing this in about half an hour (I’m from the Philippines). The only critics whose opinions I consider are Jeremy Jhans and Chris Stuckmann and I am already going in with no expectations at all.
