Comic book films are a genre despit what some critics shout out as it being a fad.

The best news about it's success is covered above except you forgot one thing. :)

This will certainly make Marvel more excited about make a hardcore Thor film that's being written as we speak. :)

Interesting. What can you tell about that?

There's no reason a Thor movie has to be "hardcore". As long as it's epic and imaginative it will be successful.

wow it doesn't take much to get you guys excited...

A 2 hour video game cut-scene is all it takes nowadays to get fanboys and fangirls hot and sweaty?

I'm glad I grew up during a time when movies, tv and cartoons actually required some kind of intelligence and good story telling to be able to earn good box office returns and viewership.

I say some kind because even back then, the stuff I watched wouldn't be regarded as highly intelligent, but definitely moreso than this glossy cgi-filled lord of the rings wannabe.

Maybe they just really enjoyed the movie,i'm noticing a pattern with you already.......

Does EVERYTHING have to be oh-so-artsy-and intellectual? :whatever:

Entertainment comes in many different forms. Why not climb down off your high horse and just kick back and enjoy a little bit?

When? The 50s?
There's always been mindless successful entertainment. Come on, Supercar, The Dukes of Hazzard, the Transformers, Josie and the Pussycats...

the 80's -Manimal, Automan, The Fall Guy, Airwolf, Blue Thunder, MacGuyver, Spider-man and His Amazing Friends, Happy Days, Knight Rider, G.I. Joe, Smurfs, Mon Chi-chis...

The 90's- Married with Children, Thunder in Paradice, Renegade, Hercules:The Legendary Journeys, Xena, Adventures of Brisco County Jr., Vampire: the Embrace,...

I want to know what generation I_Hate_You_All grew up in to make a silly claim like that. It certainly wasn't the 70's or 80's, or the 90's. Maybe he's from the future?

300 dropped on Saturday over Friday but still heading towards a 66 mill weekend. #2 behind Ice Age 2. Not bad at all. Actually awesome.

SATURDAY PM 3-DAY ESTIMATES UPDATE: '300' w/$24.5 million on Saturday; New 3-Day Estimate is $66 milion
by Steve Mason
March 10, 2007
SATURDAY NIGHT UPDATE – It looks like 300 (Warner Bros) is suffering a Saturday drop-off with many of the rabid fanboys having rushed out to see the movie Thursday midnight and Friday. After a $27.8 million opening day, the Zack Miller-directed Spartan war epic will deliver an estimated $24.5 million on Saturday. By the end of the weekend, 300 will have banked an estimated $66 million. That’s far above industry expectations as the $60 million adaptation of the Frank Miller graphic novel enjoys the all-time 3rd biggest 3-day opening for an R-rated film, trailing only The Matrix Reloaded ($91.7 million) and The Passion of the Christ ($83.8 million). By Monday morning, 300 will be at least the all-time 2nd biggest March opening, likely falling just short of Ice Age 2: The Meltdown ($68 million), but it’s going to be very close. Either way, the gang at Warner Bros is thrilled, especially after the studio's rough 2006, which included Poseidon, The Ant Bully, Superman Returns and Lady in the Water.

SATURDAY MORNING UPDATE - The weekend belongs to Zack Snyder’s 300 (Warner Bros), which has fulfilled the months of internet buzz, marketing hype and fanboy anticipation with a $27.7 million Friday and an estimated 3-day gross of at least $60 million. I’m told that if these numbers need to be revised by Monday, they will go north.

The bloody, violent, over-the-top, R-rated war picture adapted from Frank Miller’s graphic novel got an early start with Thursday night 12:01am screenings across the country including 57 IMAX locations. My sources tell me that all of those IMAX screenings sold out, breaking the midnight IMAX box office record set by last Summer’s Superman Returns, another Warner Bros. release. 300 will almost certainly smash the opening weekend IMAX record of $5 million set by Superman Returns. Batman Begins, also from Warner Bros., is the 3rd best IMAX opening weekend with $3.1 million.

If my numbers for this Spartan war epic hold, 300 will be the all-time 3rd best opening weekend for an R-rated movie:

1. The Matrix Reloaded - $91.7 million
2. Passion of the Christ - $83.8 million
3. 300 - $60 million
4. Hannibal - $58 million
5. 8 Mile - $51.2 million

By Monday morning, 300 will also be, at least, the all-time 2nd best opening weekend for a March release trailing only Ice Age 2: The Meltdown:

1. Ice Age 2: The Meltdown - $68 million
2. 300 - $60 million
3. Ice Age - $46.3 million

It’s still possible that this sword and sandals epic may exceed Ice Age 2 by Monday morning.

300 probably helped the poorly-reviewed Wild Hogs (Buena Vista) to a far better-than-expected $7.5 million Friday which should translate to a 3-day of $27.8 million. Because many moviegoers were sold out of 300, they were forced to see another movie, and Hogs was the beneficiary. Also, teen boys too young to be admitted to 300 without a parent may be buying tickets to see the PG-13 Travolta/Lawrence/Allen/Macy teaming, then “crossing over” to see the Leonidas and friends in their rumble with Xerxes and the Persians. After its 2nd weekend, Wild Hogs’ total domestic box office haul will be $77.2 million.

Bridge To Terabithia (Buena Vista) finished 5th on Friday adding $1.7 million to kick-off the weekend, but its Saturday and Sunday matinee business will likely lift it to $7.4 million for the weekend and a 3rd place finish. The adaptation of the Newbery Medal-winning children’s novel’s cume will be $67.5 million by Monday. Ghost Rider (Sony) generated $2 million on Friday and will be #4 for the weekend with $7 million bringing its to-date domestic take to $104.3 million. Meanwhile, David Fincher’s Zodiac (Paramount) continues to disappoint with $1.9 million Friday and will pick up no more than an estimated $6.6 million for the weekend. The well-reviewed serial killer pic will have a 10-day total of $23.5 million.

When? The 50s?
There's always been mindless successful entertainment. Come on, Supercar, The Dukes of Hazzard, the Transformers, Josie and the Pussycats...

Yeah, I'm not dumb. I know that. Not arguing with that anyway so no need to stick up a straw man. Doesn't everyone on the internet hate Michael bay because he makes mindless movies? Hmmm I smell hypocricy. I actually love him for making kick ass movies where you can check your brain at the door and watch stuff blow up for 2 hours. That's what movies are about, baby.

What's confounding me is how now it seems movies like this don't require any kind of good story or acting (Not talking about oscar winning stuff, just better than average) to attract praise at least around here. Overloading the audience with cgi visuals seems to do the trick now.

I'm not on a high horse either. The movie was just so awful that I'm surprised I, who do in fact like cool movies that are just cool and don't really demand much intelligence to enjoy, didn't enjoy this over the top cartoon. I play videogames, eat pizza. Can enjoy bad movies for what they're worth, maybe some nudity. And this just wasn't fun or interesting for me at all even though it has all the stuff I usually like. I predict it'll have bad word of mouth and drop like the president's approval rating next weekend.

I think that a movie can stimulate different parts of people's brains, and can be considered great for stimulating any of those parts. This particular movie gets people's adrenaline flowing, and that is the reason for the praise.

Because I didn't like the movie.

I don't expect the movie to be Kubrick level of depth, just have more going for it than fx... something.... anything... it wasn't there. It felt so hollow, much like a level super mario.

I'll leave since I know my opinion is not welcome though.

Enjoy your film.

Your opinion is welcome and encouraged. :yay:

However, the post i responded to made you come off as a bit dismissive towards the movie when you referred to it as a "LOTR wannabe", which i found slightly odd, as 300 is a hell of a lot more based in historical fact than LOTR is, considering LOTR isnt even real.

All I'M saying is; i dont need every single movie i see to have some deep rooted morality lesson. 300 entertained me immensely.

Sorry it didnt do the same for you.

I respect your opinion. I still have to see the movie as it opens in 2 weeks here in Italy, so I can't really judge it.
But word of mouth seems good, if not only here on the boards, even on IMDB. And it was well received by professional critics too.

The drop on saturday was expected...the extra push on Friday were midnite shows. Its still very good...and Sundays estimates are between 16-18m. But we'll find out Monday...I'd just like to see what the official headline is today.

The official headline today is that it is expected to do 68+ million for the weekend, which is a new March opening record.

Speaking of LOTR, was one of those blonde guys in LOTR? Did he play the son who couldn't get his father's love, so he recklessly risked his life in battle?

Box Office Mojo has the weekend estimate up: $ 70.025 milion for 300. That, of course, will be a new March record as long as the actual hold up. Incredibly successful film, especially given the modest budget. :word:

How come Superman and Batman's new film couldn't do these kind of numbers, that's pretty pathetic? 300 may become DC's new head comic book film property. I'm shocked.

Actually, 300 is a Dark Horse comic book.

Well Hulk had a bigger opening weekend (62 million) than Batman Begins and SR but ultimately it only made 132 million. BB and SR made over 200 million.

I didn't know that, I thought it was DC's. I'm not a hardcore fan of 300.

True, how very true. I guess it's the fact that 300 is an unknown property. I wonder if this film will hit 200M.

I think the actuals will be lower just like IA2.

but man R rated movie getting PG rated opening means people were waiting for a hradcore r rated sword and scandal movie.

but i think this movie will be frontloaded because all R rated movies are unless they are smply masterpeices or revolutnary which 300 aint.

it is a good , fun hardcore movie. (8/10)

Still i am impressed.

FOX u better make live free or die hard, avp 2, hannibal and wolverine R rated movies and i am sure the fanbase will support bigtime and those movies can get huge opening weekend.

He was also the Friar side-kick in Van Helsing.

I am seeing this in 2 hours with 4 other people & with me that makes 5 so thats more money for the box office :cwink:
