Just because you didn't like the character and development doesn't mean it wasn't great acting. Joaquin transformed.

A major part of acting is its contribution to the story telling. If the story simply falls flat for someone, its going to effect their opinion of the performance.

SLP took home Best Film, Screenplay, Director, and Actress at the Indie Spirit Awards. *shakes head at it being an "indie"*

My two favourite girls on the planet with the chance of Oscar glory tomorrow.

I love you both. :hrt:

I'm changing some of my predictions and the changes have nothing to do with the Spirit award wins. If anything a win there means that you aren't going to win at the Oscars. If my new predictions are wrong, who cares?

BEST PICTURE: Argo
BEST DIRECTOR: Spielberg
BEST ACTRESS: Lawrence
BEST ACTOR: DDL
BEST SUP ACTRESS: Hathaway
BEST SUP ACTOR: Jones
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: Zero Dark Thirty
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE: Wreck-it-Ralph
Best FOREIGN FILM: Amour
BEST DOC: Searching for SugarMan
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS: Life of Pi
BEST ADAPTED: Argo

Anyone else watching the Independent Spirit awards? I find the nominations for that to be more or less of the choices I would pick. (or the choices that most awards show brush away)

Goddamn Canadian Frenchie sympathizer. That movie had me like the zombie in the Starburst commercial, boring me back to death. :cmad:

The White Ribbon was a good film but not the most exciting film in the world so I expect Amour to be A-more of the same.

Yeah I made that joke, what of it? :p

I'll only do the ones I care about.

Picture: Argo
Actor: DDL
Actress: Jen
Director: Lee
Supp Actor: Tough one but I'll go with De Nero
Supp Actress: Annie
Adapt Screen: Lincoln
Orig Screen: Django
Cinema: Skyfall
Editing: Argo
Score: Skyfall
Song: Skyfall
Pro Design: Les Mis
VFX: Pi
Animated: Brave (safest choice even though I didn't care for the film)

It makes me sad that Life of Pi has a zero chance of winning BP.

I'm not too sad: the movie was nominated, and made half a billion dollars. And Ang Lee has a chance of winning best director.

Some movies are just too good to win an Oscar. This is one of them.

Or you know its a good movie that came out at a moment with a lot of equally good or better competitors.

I just happen to think that this year's list of BP Nominees is actually full of deserving and varied films. I haven't seen all of them but none of them are films that I would mind seeing win which is a lot more than I can say for many of the winners and nominees from the past few years.

I'm not sure why Argo would win seeing as how affleck wasn't nominated for best director. I don't really get how that works?

It's very unusual, there's only three others: Wings (1927/28), Grand Hotel (1931/32), and Driving Miss Daisy (1989). Which is why I didn't think it was a top tier contender for this award show though Argo has somehow won most of the other award shows. Who knows what happened and why it missed the boat with the Academy for the director award nomination. They were more feeling Lincoln love and hoopla, I guess. Maybe it's out of their system.

It was a great film and Riva should win the Oscar.

Funnily enough I like the directing of Argo better than the film itself.

What I hope for the most though, is that Searching for Sugarman wins. Not only is it great, but the director is from my country (Sweden)!

I agree entirely.

Its strange. Half the time, it seems like the Academy really doesn't know all that much about movies. :o

Haha, I just saw a promo on ABC touting this year's Oscars as one "guys can finally watch." Featuring the Avengers, Ted, 50 years of Bond, and Seth MacFarlane.

A huge amount of momentum since those nominations first came out and conversely, cooling attitudes towards several of the other nominees, especially Zero Dark Thirty.

Is there going to be Live Streams for the Oscars?

I feel the same about Les Mis (and Life of Pi, which was my second favorite of the BP nominees). Les Mis is my favorite stage musical and I loved the movie version, which to me was more important than how many awards it took home. Also seeing Les Mis do so well at the box office was a perfect :oldrazz: to some of the snarkier reviews out there.

I've seen most of the nominees this year, and there really isn't a bad movie in the running this year. So I'm just going to enjoy the show.

Cause it has won essentially every precursor. It would be the runaway favorite if Affleck had gotten Best Director nomination.

Only directors within the Academy get to nominate directors. And apparently, there’s only about 300 of them - and for whatever reason, not enough of them checked Affleck’s name. However, all members (about 6000) get to nominate best picture. So that’s how the discrepancy is mathematically possible.
