Yup, me too. Not because I don't feel its worthwhile, but they seem to be using that as the *only* angle why Peggy is awesome

Yeah, I just saw another commercial for it, where they just showed pictures of other female leads in ABC shows, and that she likes to bring men to their knees. How transparent can you get? The marketing for this sucks even more than Agents of SHIELD's marketing ever did.

Jackman is too tall for Wolvie, so what's the difference.

You're too tall for Venom's dad

personally, I hope they DO focus on the feminism. it is the 21st century and some males still behave like they did in the 50ies, moaning about 'feminist crap'. they eed to be educated by asskicking women

Since only the episode three synopsis has been released, I do hope one of the next five episodes features these guys:

Howling_Commandos_01.jpg

They trust Peggy and they know what she could do. None of the agents introduced in the series know what she can actually do outside of her desk job. Not sure about the other Howling Commandoes, but Dum Dum and Howard Stark have a friendship (based on the end of the Agent Carter One Shot) so they probably would help Peggy try to clear Howard Stark's name.

If this really is a throw-away series about her tracking down random weapons for Stark that will never be seen again, then this show will be a waste. I care about the formation of SHIELD...the infiltration of Hydra...Zola...The Winter Soldier...the dead Kree. I don't really care to see Peggy showing Girl Power.

Some of the things you mentioned were invented in another show where the same criticism could be laid. We care about those things because those shows were allowed to breathe to do their own thing.

Yes...but they are building storylines. That's my point. I don't care to see Peggy running around grabbing McGuffins that don't matter outside of these 7 weeks. That changes if one of the McGuffins were an Infinity Stone (which wont happen) or if there are other things that occur that impact 2015 and beyond. But if its just "here's some otherwise meaningless adventures that happened a long time ago to someone no longer relevant and none of the adventures impacts anyone who is currently relevant" then I don't care.

The only thing that will give meaning to this is giving a damn about the central character, not inanimate objects or faceless organisations (and we've seen how the Hydra/Shield story plays out, no tension in that), or a dead alien body.

The show is called "Agent Carter", it's about Agent Carter. There's no trickery or obfuscation involved, we've been told exactly what the main focus of this series is - Peggy's story after the war, in 1946. If you don't want to see that then don't watch it.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see her interact with Hydra, but only because I think it would provide opportunities for her story (two fold: first, have Hydra infiltrate both SSR and the KGB and get some good old Cold War tension with a bit of SPECTRE thrown in; second, I think Madame Hydra should be on the show so you can have a worthwhile female villain to go with our female hero. But it's a terrible mistake to look at this only as a stepping stone to other things.

I hope the feminist stuff takes the backseat once show starts picking up pace

I'm not picking on you, necessarily, but I do think you're looking at this wrong...

I think the problem with this line of thinking is that this is going to be the central driving force of the show, By virtue of Peggy's era, when and where she's working, politics of her chosen profession and her very identity will be wrapped up in the idea that women should be treated equal, that Peggy should be used and treated because she is just as skilled as any man, yet the tension of her story will be that she is constantly overlooked and overshadowed every step of the way until Stark needs her help to form SHIELD.

You might not think that there is a whole lot of narrative drive to that using a feminist angle, but there are ways to tell Peggy's story with this struggle as the key feature, without coming across as preachy or cloying.

But the "feminist stuff" should be there, as it is central to Peggy's journey.

And Peggy is indeed awesome, powerful, and strong... She is a well-rounded character portayed expertly by a great actress... The key problem is that the rest of world cannot and refuses to see that ;)

Seeing as how ABC's recent successes are shows focused on females (SCANDAL, HTGAWM, REVENGE...) and those top key demos and dominate in the ratings, positioning AGENT CARTER as another in the same line shows that they absolutely know how to market this to their audience.

As far as the "bringing men to their knees" bit... It's clear the double meaning on that line.

The fact that some find this problematic is... strange to me. :woot:

it happened on Shield with Lorelei :D

Hayley Atwell:

Since it’s set in 1946 in the first season, there’s a long way that we can go with it. We can explore the ’50s, maybe the ’60s, and right up to the present day where she’s in old age. So it’s really up to Marvel, ABC and the fans to decide if that’s the story that they want to continue telling. I certainly would jump at the chance to keep doing it for the rest of my career.

That's a really good point & one I had not considered.

Because Marvel is nothing if not dead set on telling individual stories that don't impact other character's stories...
