James Cameron is not a great filmmaker. So overrated. Titanic made a bunch of money because of teenage girls in love with Leo. Avatar...ugh. Didn't like it. Not an engaging story, relied to heavily of special effects.
Agreed on Cameron being overrated. Your assertion on Titanic's success, though, is flawed. Let's go through the numbers.
Titanic made a third of its money in the United States, $600,788,188. At that time, the US population for people under 18 was ~70,000,000. Breaking that down further, if we assume equal population among ages, we only want people between 13 and 18, inclusive; therefore, we want 6/18 (or 1/3) of 70,000,000, bringing us to 23,333,334 people (rounding up). NOW only HALF those people are females, so in 1997, the US had approximately 11,666,667 females between ages 13 and 18. If every single one of these young women saw Titanic, they would have to pay ~$4.68, the average ticket price in 1997. At that price, if every girl in the US saw the film once, then they would contribute $54,600,002 to the total domestic gross. Even if every teenage girl in the US saw the film 3 times, they'd only account for 27.3% of the total US gross.
Now those estimates are way too high! Let's say only 4/5 teenage females saw the film and saw it an average of 1.5 times. In that case, they'd only account for 10.9% of the total US gross.
Contrary to popular belief, it wasn't the teenage female population!
I love all the Lord of the Rings movies, and The Dark Knight...in my opinion those are outliers and exceptions to the rule (which I might have made up earlier). You haven't convinced me sir, but nice try.![]()
Strive to be the exception! Convinced yet? Or maybe I have to dig up more outliers until you see that they aren't really outliers at all.
Want to try again?
Certainly.
