All Things Superman: An Open Discussion - Part 3

It sounds like the supposed third act problems rumour from a few months back.
to me it sounds like the script got fixed months ago but not every executive likes what they have. its not like they are in a position to play around. this movie needs to be in production in 2011.

Seriously if there is a problem at this stage, then Goyer and the whole Nolan crowd have been severly over rated.

But I doubt it. :D

I'm still wondering on what they could use to be Superman's first official save in front of a public audience for this film? I mean while SR had a lot of problems, I think one of the few things most of us can agree to is that the plane sequence was spectacular; so I'm like wondering as to how they could top?

Good point. I mean I'm hoping the first 'save' of the film will be by Clark in secret in Africa lol, but Superman's first save? Wow that's a toughie.

Do you think it should be in Metropolis or some global disaster. I kinda hope Metropolis but your right, it should be better than the plane scene.

Do you think Lois should be involved in it? Or just watching?

I'm guessing that it'll happen in Lois, and so far, Lois has always been a part or involved in the first official save when he debuted as Superman.

I had an idea of a cruise ship disaster. It would be the biggest and newest in the world, built by Lex-corp. The most well know dignitaries from Metropolis and the east coast are onboard, as well as several reporters from different news outlets, including Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen.

The ship is launched and makes its way out of metropolis harbor with much fanfare.
A hour or so later, things have calmed down. Folks are relaxed and mingle.

They have reaches the open sea. Suddenly three massive explosions rock the ship and it lists hard. Just as It starts to capsize, a blue and red streak arrives and rights the ship.

Lois looks up while she hangs on...Its a man dressed in blue and red.

The man then lifts the massive oceanliner out of the water and takes it back toward Metropolis harbor. He looks left and right and decides to set it down on dry land. Each end smashes abandoned warehouse flat.

He hovers for a moment, looking for injured people onboard. Jimmy snaps his camera like a madman at the sight, Lois is stunned but records audio.
The man flies back and forth between the ground and the ship, taking the injured to awaiting ambulances.
When satisfied all injured parties are removed, he lingers for a minute. He notices Jimmy and Lois.
He smiles and Flies off, thinking to himself that he will remove the ship later.

Lex sees the events on television and pounds his desk with his fists in anger...the sinking of that ship would have netted him several hundred mllion dollars in insurance money, not to mention also getting rid of his rivals and nosy reporters.
He glares at the man on tv dressed in blue and red.

to me it still isn't good enough. :P

it's easy.

natural disaster...
man-made disaster
or
alien-made disaster

just pick one.

IN Lois? :p

I think the problem is that it was incredible to see him flying like that. So you can't match it unless you just have another air save, because any other kind of disaster is not going to be as centered on flight.

I'd go the complete opposite I think.

Have a big explosion in a Hotel lobby that Lois has just entered for an interview with a source digging up dirt on Luthor. Have her clambering her way through the rubble, calling out, people screaming. Have her trying to help somebody but realising it's too late, then trip, hit her head.

All goes black.

We a flash from her POV of Superman, shrouded from our vision by the settling dust. Then a flash of his chest as he carries her free. Another close up flash of bright blue eyes.

And then a light shining in at her, with a paramedic saying 'can you here me Miss Lane?'

She comes too, rejecting all the fuss. Jimmy comes out of the crowd. 'OMG Lois are you okay? Did you see him?'

...

I dunno, it might be interesting lol

A few discussion points:

1. Should we see Brainiac's bottling of Kandor in this movie in real time during the origins portion, or should we see it in a flashback in a sequel to Man of Steel down the road?

2. How big of a supporting cast does this film need? Superman basically has 3 supporting casts: characters from Krypton, Smallville and Metropolis. Obviously the big names will be there but what about Lana Lang, Pete Ross, Cat Grant etc?

Personally I'd like to see this film barely touch on the Krypton mythos and keep the story Earth based and grounded to him being a hero.

I'd get the second film to be the one that goes Godfather Part II on everyone with Brainiac being the present day and Kryptonian villain. Use the present day arc to be anchored by Johns' Brainiac storyline with flashbacks going back to Krypton being sourced from the Last Days of Krypton. Get it to have a bittersweet ending with Brainiac failing to bottle Metropolis and other cities but still causing half the major cities' populations to disappear.

I'd say the third film would be ideal for dealing with the fallout of everyone going missing. Supes tries to find out what's happened to everybody and in turn discover's them trapped in the Bottle City of Kandor whilst being ruled by Zod who was caught and imprisoned by Brainiac here. He's since become the city's ruler and everyone in Kandor is brainwashed into thinking Krypton never exploded, including Supes once he's captured by Zod's minions. Combine Azarello's For Tomorrow with Godfall.

Something of that sort anyway.

1. during the explosion of the planet we should see that apart of the explosion is the wrong color over a city. The entire planet flashes yellow when it explodes, except over one spot where the flash is blue. It'll hint at something different happening in that spot but most will miss it till the sequel.

I think it might be interesting if the film has Clark Kent be unaware of his Kryptonian heritage until he uses his powers, and doesn't show the destruction of Krypton, or at least not right away. This leads him to ask Jonathan and Martha Kent questions, and then they tell him about him landing on Earth. It's only when he learns about where he came from that we see Krypton, and Jor-El and Lara. This would show Clark learning a life-altering truth, and how it changes his perception of himself and life as a whole, which results in him becoming Superman. Thus, by not showing the scenes on Krypton immediately, we (the audience) are as in the dark as Clark Kent himself.

Either they don't, or they may find something that Jor-El left for Kal-El to tell him of his heritage.

Oh I thought you meant they would recount the events to him and it would be shown through flashbacks. I'd rather begin with Krypton. Everybody knows that he is rocketed from a planet that explodes. It's as iconic as the Waynes deaths. But if they were to keep a large amount of history blank, to sound more idealised, which is torn down by Zod and Brainiac though. But I have to say, I do hope they get the scene from Secret Origin where Clark sees images of his parents, Martha feels insecure next to his goddess of a mother and Jonathon feels insignificant as his father was a brilliant mind of a society, Clark runs out, and Jonathon comforts him and reassures him he is still his son. And to me if they can get the Birthright message to his parents make a very powerful message it is everything he explores throughout the film that makes him Superman.

they wouldnt, i dont think they ever know where hes from until he goes to find out for himself. They just know hes an alien.

Pretty much.

Why do we need to begin with Krypton? I think it might be more interesting if we follow Clark through his own discovery of his past. To me, a revelation like that doesn't have as much impact if we have already have seen (in the film itself) what the character is just finding out. Clark finding out he is an alien has more impact if we haven't seen Krypton or his parents before that than if we do. I want that discovery to be a completely life-changing experience for Clark Kent, so it needs that impact.

"There’s hope for The Man of Steel, but the Superman franchise has been tricky at best and as of right now nobody is completely confident in the script they have."

That whole 'as of now...' line reeks of made up BS just to flesh out the article. It's to give the impression that the writer has connections, and an inside line to the production. He didn't even say " someone close to the producers told me X, Y or Z" which means he might have heard this rumour ten times removed from the original source, or just simply made it up!

Well Devin knows his stuff, so tough to doubt him. However, the script had issues early on with Goyer strictly working on it, Nolan came back into the fold he helped lay it out with Goyer and supposedly it is now workable.

Anyways, Filming is starting in Plano, IL August 6, according to comic book movie.

We've heard August for a good while. I think Variety said July it was starting...

I wouldn't mind it starting then (July)

You know what's weird though? I mean correct me if I'm wrong folks, but didn't CA:TFA start filming roughly around the time that Comic con was going on last summer? And yet, it's being released in July.

So how is it that MOS got pushed all the way to December for a release?

Um longer shooting schedule. Not every movie has the same shooting time. Also TDK comes out next July. No point in putting Superman out in the summer.

That I get, but there's just a part of me that wishes that the film would come out in September or something earlier than Dec.

I could see late November but nothing big gets released in October and September that makes huge dough.

Rare if ever that a tentpole movie would be released in October or September, but there's been some money makers in those months. Meet The Parents, Shark Tale, Rush Hour, nothing near or over 200 million though.
