All Things Superman: An Open Discussion - Part 3

Not really. Nolan could've told in a linear manner and it still wouldve been good. BB was made before comic origin stories started getting cliche.

You mean before Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Hulk and Daredevil? Yes, it sure is lucky it got in there, being the sixth big screen superhero origin story and all. If it were seventh, people would have just started getting fed up with things!

Oh, wait. Didn't we have Iron Man's origin, which made money, and the Transformers origin, which made money, and Thor's origin, which made money, and Captain America coming up, which I bet will make money? Man, people must be really sick and tired of origins alright. That is, sick and tired of always giving them their money.

Russel Crowe possibly as Jor-El...Methinks this is going to be one Krypton-heavy movie.

Yup, the bad reviews about GL really sucks. I can't help but wonder if it makes WB re-think things, especially so if it bombs.
They should have had a clue GL was in trouble when the CG suit was hated by most. But no, they know best.
I'm still hoping it can make enough to warrant making other films like Flash, GA, etc.
It's not rocket science. Hire a good director and actors, writers, FX company, and have plenty of action. Give us what we want to see, not what YOU want us to see.

It does. Characters like Green Arrow may not get a film if Green Lantern fails.

I think that audiences are tired of superhero movies playing it safe, not taking many risks, and doing the same things that their predecessors did.

considering the dragon tattoo trailer release, I'm guessing we'll see a superman trailer next mayish and then with Batman.

If GL bombs (under 45mil DOM OW), at least we'll likely get some good MOS casting news on Sunday, as WB scrambles to divert attention.

I'd probably take you more seriously if you didnt have a penchant for piss poor sarcasm, intended to condescend but just makes you look moronic.

I think they should do whatever's best for the Man of Steel and not worry about what other movies have done.

and the Transformers origin, which made money, and Thor's origin, which made money

Transformers wasn't really about their origin despite the presence of the AllSpark (if they made a film based on Transformers: Exodus, it would be), and Thor, like The Incredible Hulk, was more about the villain's origin.

Not the movie I saw...

You saw the little boy grow into an arrogant so and so and then transform into a hero... The villain followed a similar path, but I really don't see how it was more about his origin than Thor's...

Well I suppose Thor wasn't a conventional origin: he was pretty much Thor at the beginning and had to earn back the powers he had. For me a Thor origin story would've be an Asgardian movie about how young Thor earned Mjolnir.

After Costner and Crowe I'm not sure I want anymore superstars or at least lead role-actors.

I mean BB had huge names and actors like Caine, Oldman, Neeson, Freeman and Wilkinson, but other than Neeson none of them are really superstars/lead actors the way Crowe is and the way Costner was. None of them never stole the scene the way someone like Crowe will.

In Crowe's case, if he's cast, I feel his sole (and obvious) purpose in the movie is to draw people in, like with Brando. In that case I'm not interested in more big names who might overshadow the story and Cavill. Sure, Crowe will only steal the origin-scenes, but other equally big names might steal more important scenes.

Anyone else feel this?

Well for me, an origin story is the origin of the HERO, not the life story of the character. Yeah, he already had powers on Asgard, but the movie showed his origin as a hero of earth.

If the characters are three dimensional with growth and development and there is a good story and plot then origin movies can be great. Really its finding the balance between action and everything else, so that you keep the audiences into it. Not sure if Green Lantern has accomplished that.

Agreed. And for Marvel that is what it had to be if they were going to tie Thor into The Avengers. It had to be about him coming to Earth for the first time. Couldn't have taken place entirely on Asgaard.

Can't wait until we find out what VFX house will be mainly in charge of MOS effects.

Hope it's either ILM or WETA this time around.

I think that audiences are tired of superhero movies playing it safe, not taking many risks, and doing the same things that their predecessors did.

Yet when these types of movies do take risks, then generally fail. Say what you will about Superman Returns (personally I hate it with the passion of a thousand hotly burning suns), but it was a risk taker. It was a superhero epic with almost zero action focusing on the feelings and emotions of the hero instead of the punching and the adventure. Turns out everybody wanted to see funny pirates instead. And look at Ang Lee's Hulk. Almost the same thing. Focus on the drama instead of the Hulk Smash. Didn't work.

But then we have movies like Iron Man, which might be the most standard superhero origin movie ever released and it killed at the box office. Same with Transformers, a movie that takes zero risks and even at its worst becomes the highest grossing movie of the year besides Avatar. Speaking of Avatar, there's Avatar, a movie with zero compelling plot but tons of super pretty VFX. Guess what movie people flocked to?

In the end people just want to be entertained by these movies. Sure, they can accept something deep and meaningful. Christopher Nolan did something huge when he made his Batman movies. He proved that comic heroes can make that type of movie. But I think 95% of the time people just want to chill in a nice air conditioned theater and watch a simple story with fantastic special effects. And that's all the new Superman movie needs to do. Hell, this one shouldn't even try that hard to break any molds after what happened with Returns. Superman is a damaged film property right now. If this new one doesn't work, its bye bye Superman for a very long time. That's why, God help me for saying this, it needs to be more like Transformers than risk being the next Dark Knight, at least at this moment.

well, if an audience goes in to watch a Superman film, surely he will expect to see some 'Super' things. expectation can't be met, the film fails. as simple as that.

I really hope it's either one of them because I don't want it to be Sony Imageworks. They should be avoided like the plague.
