There could be several reasons. And this could be the only scout ship that provided an answer, so Jor-El sends the rocket ship there as a gamble.

And you trust too much. I can affirm Jor-El and Lara don't survive.

The IMDB 'press screening' review introduced an idea that would make 100% sense for a realism type film, explain the creation of an iconic Superman location, AND answer a question that's been pondered since 1938....

All it takes is one of THE biggest changes to the mythology ever. Forget SR and the kid, THIS change (which I'm convinced is happening) is going to piss off more people than Nolans TDKR...

Kal-El is not the only member of his family to escape the destruction of Krypton.

I am still convinced that both Jor-El and Lara die - just not together. I see a scenario where Jor-El sacrifices himself to save his wife and child, who fly off in a ship. They escape to Earth, where the damaged ship is at risk. There, Lara sacrifices herself to save her son, who is sent off in a emergency pod, whilst the ship crashes in the North. When Clark gets older, he finds the ship, which recognises who he is, informing him of his past.

Almost every part of this change improves the story. We get an explanation for why Jor-El didn't try to save his whole family - now he does. We get a clear reason why the ship comes to Earth - Lara piloted it there. We get an scientific explanation for the 'Fortress' instead of magic crystals.

All that's lost is a bit of the whimsy, and idea that a child is sent out at random, although the outcome is the same.

Lots of evidence to support this. In the trailers, the 'fortress' looks more like a ship, down to the flares, floors.

The shot of a woman watching the destruction (Krypton?). It could be from a cave - OR a view screen from a ship?

Finally, John Byrne was set to use a similar idea for his origin, called (surprise, surprise) Man of Steel. Lara was to come with Kal-El to Earth and the Kents, and die shortly after by Kryptonite poisoning...

The question is, would you support such a change to the Superman story?

Forgetting that it was already done decades ago, sure, that would be a huge change:

Yeah not to mention the leaked call sheet from a year ago pretty much rules out either Jor-El or Lara leaving Krypton, not to mention the recent solicitation of the kids MOS books:
The Fate of Krypton: The story begins on planet Krypton, where disaster is about to strike. The planet is doomed. With no time to spare, Superman’s parents, Jor-El and Lara, make the heartbreaking decision to save their only son by sending him to Earth.

On a related topic I'm really curious to see the rest of the scout ship and how it acts as the 'Fortress'. :) We know from conceptual artwork we'll be seeing more of it including the cockpit.

I know that Jor-El and Lara die - that is 100% confirmed. I'm just convinced theres a change to how, when and where this will happen.

I know there have been changes to the El family before, but this one is vastly different. We are talking about Supermans parents having a different role than the one established in countless restarts, NEVER changing. Until now.

BTW, another reason I'm convinced of these changes is that so far, MOS seems to be giving the impression that its a remake of Donners Superman 1 and 2.

We've got posts talking about how Clark will stay 10 years in the FOS to train. We've got reputable writers talking about the new FOS in the North. The childhood in Smallville. Nerdy Clark. Bye bye Pa Kent. Kneel before Zod. So far, the trailers and pics give that impression.

Except, Goyer, Nolan and Snyder have all said how different their version is, and unlike other filmmakers, I believe them. Like TDK and B89, there will be references and acknowledgements, but MOS will be its own thing.

That's why I think most assumptions we have made are 100% wrong.

How exactly would Lara simply die while under the yellow sun?

The ship could crash, with her inside. No exposure to the Yellow sun. The ship is sealed.

Then why wouldn't the baby die? How would the child get from the ship to Kansas?

Also not quite sure how the ship being "sealed" would keep out the sun. If you have the tech to keep out the sun completely, you'd think they wouldn't be in much danger of whatever destroys Krypton.

The idea is that Kal-El's ship is an emergency pod, from the main ship (which crashes). So He is saved as they approach Earth.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it's an interesting theory.

That shot of Lara(?) watching the destruction of Krypton - WHY is she alone? WHERE is she watching from? If its on Krypton, then why is there no damage where she is? It's that shot that's got me intrigued...

Jor-El sacrifices himself to save Lara and Kal-El by fighting off Zod and his forces while perishing in Krypton's destruction.

^

Would be a hell of a change. Crowe's casting would also make sense, as would his action figure, with gun. Gladiator in space...

A more physical Jor-El, in contrast to the classic regal statesman by Brando...

Think of the Dumbledore played by Richard Harris vs the version by Michael Gambon.

Will those shirts make me look as built?

Good luck trying to figure out how krypton will play out. It's complicated. We know krypton is doomed. We know Kal-El get sent to earth and that's it.It's alot of dots you have to connect.

I'm sorry, what?!... Have you watched the teaser trailer? Does that look to promote a superman movie simply remaking what Donner did with superman 1 and 2??? You must be joking.

Does, this follow the Superman: Birthright graphic novel?

Let me rephrase that.

The people who were unhappy with the idea that Bruce would quit being Batman, and that somebody else would take his place.

Ideas that worked in the context of the film, but die hard fans thought were completely against Batmans nature...

Bruce also quit in Batman beyond.

Though that was after years of actually fighting various rouges and cretins and of course a body that would actually shut down mid battle. It wasn't to take a vacation in France and be happy. Tricky stuff to say the least.

I like the idea of Lara escaping in a ship, it does make more sense than her simply staying with a dying husband by choice. Though some stories say Jor didn't have time to make a bigger ship.

If there are any significant changes (which I doubt.)
Then, I will wait to see the context in which they are presented.

the cast is absolutely amazing.
the story they chose so far is a great story.
the fact that they've still kept almost everything in the dark is incredible.
they're making a completely new reboot of Superman...
the lack of Lex Luthor and the whole land subplot :)
the lack of kryptonite in this movie
ACTION SCENES!!! :D :D PLENTY OF ACTION SCENES :D

Personally, I would like the idea that jor-el did indeed build a ship for his entire family, but for whatever reason, ( zod, war, whatever) it gets destroyed. He has to then rush and build a smaller ship for kal from the parts thats left from the larger ship...
He simply doesn't have time to rebuild the larger ship for them all.

So Clark goes into the ship this lost soul looking for his place in the world, he finds answers and when he walks out, having finally learned the truth. It's probably going to be a great big revelation. One I hope is revealed in that act and not the first(as been done before).

When the doors open to that fortress, Snyder starts with the great coverage of a changed man. Anyone who's seen the comic con footage knows that first shot is missing from the last trailer. Then he does that regal walk, then he takes in the sun, kneels and then proceeds to actually fly, maybe for the first time(obviously he's hitch hiking in alaska).

This should play pretty well if it's true.
