I think Zimmer's Batman scores are solid and that's about it. I get no enjoyment out of listening to them by themselves. I'm a Nolan Batman fan, but the music doesn't do it for me.

I don't hate them like a lot of people do; they are good action support music but that's it. They don't stand out by themselves as excellent pieces of musical composition like Williams' Superman score or Elman's Batman. The cream of the crop in terms of Superhero score they are. The only 21st century Superhero score that I felt even comes close to them is Jonn Powell's score for the Last Stand. The only worthwhile thing to come from that film.

Ah yes, who is the best Batman music composer? Which is really off-topic, of course. Elfman has a lot of memorable stuff there, but his music is kind of zany. Hans Zimmer's music is more straight-laced, but less classic. He said he was holding off on a theme specifically for Batman until the character developed, but I didn't hear it in TDKR. And the concept of "realistic music" bothers me. I don't think you would be hearing music at all outside of street musicians, bands that play at parks, and from car stereos as a general rule. The idea of one type of music being more realistic is absurd to me. But it does fit the tone of Nolan's films more.

Walkers music was originally Elfman-influenced, but kind of grew into its own thing pretty quickly. I think it has a "straightness" that Elfman generally lacks, while being more classic and memorable than Zimmer's. So yes, I think it's the best Batman music, to the best Batman interpretation in general. TAS was crazy lucky

As for MOS, Hans better bring it. He'd better create a theme so dramatic and awe-inspiring, that even skeptics will admit that this is the new theme for a new era. I don't want to watch MOS and miss the Williams theme. I want to appreciate the new music and like it equally, but in a different way.

Elfman's Batman theme is great, but it sounds like damn near every other theme he's ever done. At least with Zimmer, I have some hope that the MOS score won't just sound like Dark Knight-lite.

I love Elfman's work on Batman. I love Zimmer's work on Batman. I love Williams work on Superman. And I sure as hell hope I'll love Zimmer's work on man of steel.

I couldn't care less for which one is teh bettah, as long as they work in the context of the movie they are used in.

I never liked the Williams theme much, sounds too much like marching music or like parade music to me, that's what I think of when I hear it, a parade. And to me it doesn't capture the spirit of what Superman truly is, maybe for the Donner films but I find those flawed as well so there it is. Williams himself admitted that the film had a certain amount of camp to it so the score had to reflect that and not be too serious. Well, I find that degrading for the character and it wouldn't in any way fit with what MOS is going for.

So I am VERY happy the Williams theme is finally put to rest. But then I am also not a huge fanatic of big memorable themes being a necessity for these films. I much more value that a score fits the tone/mood of the story and melds with that and the visuals of the film so that its all a whole experience not that there is a theme which rises above everything and sticks out.

I don't necessarily need a theme I can hum. For example, the MOS comic-con trailer. The JTTL theme used fit PERFECTLY and had a great effect together with the tone and visuals and IMO if you'd put the JW theme over it it would sound much worse. Yet, I couldn't remember or hum the JTTL theme for months. Doesn't matter when I watch it though because it works perfectly in context.

And knowing Zimmer, he'll deliver exactly what I want and perfectly too. But hey if he can also create a theme that is memorable and yet fits all those criteria, more power to him. I do have a soft spots for Elfman's Batman theme though. IMO it was much more fitting with the character of Batman than JW theme to Superman AND it fit the movies perfectly as well. Win-Win.

I love both Elfman's and Zimmer's score. But neither would work in each others films. Zimmer's score is underrated in my opinion.
